Form Against the 'Top' Teams

Just quickly knocked up this table to showcase where our results have come. It's quite damming how poor our away form is away from home against the top teams, however it does showcase where the room for improvement is.

Cheers for this SCB. It's not unsurprising - the best teams are the best for a reason and we've certainly seen in recent weeks that Fulham and Wolves are a level above us.

Fine margins with some of these though - we were a dodgy decision away from 1-1 at Boro, only had half a team out v Preston, and arguably had the better of Villa and Derby in the two draws.

This also reminds me how maddening those home defeats to Villa, Bristol City and Fulham were!

Not only the away form. I said after the villa game that you need to beat the teams around you to stand any chance at all of promotion or survival.

It's 2 wins from 12 against the teams above us. That's the reason we won't make the play offs in my opinion.

Completely agree. If by some sheer miracle we do, our form against the team/s we'd likely be playing coupled with our abysmal play off record doesnt fill me with hope

I posted same table last week. We only have 2 wins against teams above us out of 12 games. Both of those were at home - Wolves had 10 men and missed a pen and Derby gave us all 3 goals. It means we are operating at about our limit - getting the max out as Tufty said - as we are very effective against lower teams but struggle for a result in head to heads against the top sides. You can just about squeeze into top 6 doing this but the losses to Hull and Bolton were real body blows. Next 2 results are key - win them both and Colin beats Derby on Sunday and we are level with Derby. Real squeaky bum time then with Boro, Cardiff, Millwall, Preston, Bristol City and Brentford still to play.

Yes, 4 wins from 16 games against the top half, all at home and before Coutts’s injury suggests we are unlikely to produce the results needed to get 6th place.

Six of our remaining games are against top half clubs.

Still, one game at a time and get behind the lads, we finished well last season.

What is very noticeable is that every team that has still to come to the Lane after tonight beat us at their place.

We completely outplayed both Wolves and Derby. I’m surprised at you Magic. Not usually one for BIC

Given that teams at the top have accrued more points than those below, I would have thought that quite a few teams would have a similar table to ours.

Were all the top teams in top positions when we played them?

Of the sides we’ve beaten, pretty much. Wolves were second, Derby and Ipswich were both 8th and you can’t place Brentford as it was the first game of the season.

Of the bottom half clubs we’ve beaten I would say only Leeds and the Pigs were significantly higher when we beat them, 4th and 8th.

Both of those games we had Coutts for as well.

I think it’s a fair reflection of our season but still all to play for if the players can raise it for the final push.
