Is this Wolves side the best second tier team ever?

A month ago we were outplayed by them. Watches Wolves on Sky at Leeds and they were a different class. Leeds couldn't cope with the pace of their attack and the skill of Jota, Cavalier, Doherty and N'Diaye. I can't recall ever seeing such a classy team at this level.

I certainly think Wolves and Fulham are better than Newcastle and Brighton from last season.

Which also shows that whatever you think of Warnock as a person you have to acknowledge what an incredible job he’s done at Cardiff to put them within six points of Wolves and above Fulham.

Gotta be up there certainly, and from a money spent point of view probably the most expensive too...

Oh wait no other club could possibly surpass the Pigs' massive budget forgot about that!

some teams want an inquiry apparently about how much they have spent

I think they are claiming there is undue influence from an agent who been a major influence in bringing in the manager and many of the players ( 3rd party influence )

They are up there, but they fucking ought to be, they've spent more than some prem sides.

So?

This chip on the shoulder, let’s be the plucky underdog attitude needs to go. Wolves business model is what we should aspire to. Football is a money business these days, the 1970’s type Brian Clough teams winning the league on a shoe string era is not coming back.

Think they might be gunning for top six Prem next season.

They deserve a medal for not spunking moneh and instead investing it on top talent.

West Ham in 1980/81 (when they were still a likeable club).
Won the cup as a second division club in 1980, the following season won the second division by miles and got to the League Cup final.
Devonshire, Brooking, Lampard, Bonds, Parkes etc - a great team.

So we should aspire to get in a rich as fuck bloke to pump money into us so we can hammer the league, and then dick around in the top flight finishing between 7th-17th every season and being bloody ecstatic about it. Until we get relegated after eight years and we revert to being a decent Championship side.

If we're lucky we'd be a top Championship side afterwards, and yo-yo a bit, we'd mug off the cups because getting to the promised land and finishing 14th in the Premier League brings us a fuck load more money.

It'd be a laugh for a while I suppose, and I want us to be the best team in the fucking world, but it's never going to happen.

If everything came together at the club, and we reached our full potential, we'd probably just be Everton. Which would be great I suppose.

Reading 2005-06 were better.

They'd rough this Wolves team up and then punish them with quality.

They could play you at any game you wanted.

Wolves fan here - we played very well again tonight and are an exceptional team on our day, but haven't won anything yet. You saw us on one of our very good days at Molineux last month, but then we were dreadful at home to Forest the week before and were outplayed at Fulham last week.

We certainly play the best football I have seen at Molineux for years (pretty passes etc), but the team that won us the Championship under Mick McCarthy (with Stearman) would probably outscore the current team. We are rock solid at the back for certain and pretty to watch, but to answer the question, I'd say that Tigana's Fulham team are still the best overall team at this level.

The Forest side that won it in 97/98 under Bassett was pretty handy with a ruthless strike force of Van Hooijdonk and Kevin Campbell with Steve Stone doing some damage in behind.

Wolves are great, but for me sum up so much that is wrong about modern football. FFP is a joke when clubs are spending this amount of money in the 2nd tier.

Any semblance of a fair playing field has disappeared years ago and frankly it just feels dispiriting when you get battered by a team of international stars.

As has been said above there would be more questions asked if they were not walking the league.

But it's hardly the norm, is it? That's the point I'm making. We'd all value a little more investment at the Lane, but championship sides have never had it to the extent Wolves do now.

Thrown money at it no surprises they are top. One day the money will run out and a more level playing field will emerge once again

Worrabout Ipswich in 60/61,won old league 2,then next season,61/62,won old division 1 !
Never see that again.
PS..relegated 2 seasons later..

Wolves are perhaps the best in terms of footballing ability (simply because the standard of football has improved over time), but I agree with those that are saying the 2005/06 Reading side are a better shout. Not least because they racked up a record 106 points, which is a ludicrous amount really when you consider how good we were last season and "only" got 100. They also only lost two games all season.

I mean, we got 92 points ourselves in 2005/06 and still finished 14 points behind them! They also finished 8th next season in the Premier League - although I wouldn't be too surprised if Wolves do similar next season.
