I've been tonight, what can you say about Carruthers when he even manages to give it away constantly in an u23 match? Very poor from him. Ched looked like he couldn't be arsed to me and certainly didn't risk himself physically, definitely needs more fitness, don't think you can judge him too much on that performance though tbh, overall I thought it was a very average team effort, with Wednesday definitely the better side. They seem to have a few players, numbers 7, 9, 5 and 17 who look like they could push on - fast, strong and good passers of the ball. For us Slater is extremely combative in midfield. Number 15 who came on at half time looked a decent player, quick and decent on the ball. I've not seen the u23s for years, tbh I was quite disappointed in them - particularly in defence. Nice to see Brooks back for 25 mins, looked confident as usual.

Balakov? A Wendy just told me he’s a Bulgarian international. He looked strong when he came on.

Preslav Borukov, capped at youth level, but not full I think. He's only 17. I was told about him and an 18yr old bulgarian at leeds called Kun Temenuzhkov, both are meant to be stars in waiting.

How did you think Warren played tonight? Thought he was quick but he overhit his crosses once or twice. Spoke to his grandfather George for a bit.

Pigs looked like scoring with every attack tbh . As soon as they picked up the ball they knew exactly what to do with it and scored 2 good goals . We were still decent and I enjoyed watching the young lads give it a go the small lad up top, Regan Slater and our LB looked lively
First time watching an u23s game and for a free game I can't really complain at the standard which was pretty decent

I thought he had some nice touches but I feel like he needs to impose himself on the game a bit more. He obviously has pace and quick feet too but we didn't see enough of it - he's seems quite a quiet player, so I think he has to work on that and be more demanding of the ball. Agree his crossing was a bit off at times. Glad he played the full 90 mins though. I didn't spot George - what was his opinion?

Brooks was on for the last 20 mins and it was so good to see him play again.

He was sat just in front of Gangway D. I was exchanging greetings with George and during half time I was saying that Warren was playing well (thought he was better in the 1st half) and he was waving to my son.

You can't have been far away from us then, we were sat quite close to gangway d! Yeah he had a better first half, shame as it was over the opposite side of the pitch. Although I thought he made a few good defensive moves in the 2nd half.

Me and my son were two rows behind the directors box. Wendy's manager was there, Darius Henderson, Rob Page too. When I watched reserves matches in the 1990s and 2000s, our first team managers and coaches were always sat in the back row of the directors box but last night rompodebailey and his friends were sat there. Alan Knill seemed to be puzzled as it looked that he was wanting to sit there so he was asked to sit somewhere else

Ahh we were lower down than that. Wondered who was there from the coaching team.

If the Rompmeister was moving at match speed how much of the Second Half did AK get to see?

cant understand why people read to much into what was a rehabilitation session for3 of our players

did any one really expect Ched to hit a hat trick or Brooks jump straight back ino his trickery

It was a gentle r introduction into a lightly competetive game

Canr believe some are writing off Ched for not looking like a hungry lion
Give them both a couple of weeks of full training before declaring they are lost for this season

Knill and Prestidge from the 1st team. Mick Wadsworth from the u18s.

Who was Binnon's assistant with the black and white hat near the touchline? Treeton Blade, do you know?

I don`t.

There is a new member of the U18 coaching staff who is working with Geary, very prominent at the last couple of games, could be him.

Think he`s Scottish, but don`t know his name.

I'd add to that, had United had a training session earlier in the day? We know this has happened before and would reflect why players looked lethargic.

didn't realise we inconvenienced Knill. PS how did you know we were the offenders

Darius Henderson is an agent, he will have his eye on either one or two young lads he represents or looking at trying to sign up one or two.

I was two rows behind the directors box. When Knill was entering the directors box he seemed to be heading for the seats at the back row and stopped suddenly giving a surprised look on his face. A steward then advised him to sit elsewhere

That’s right. Today’s professional footballers, despite being fitter, faster, more athletic, having better equipment such as lighter boots and footballs and being supported by computer assisted pro-zone stats, get knackered if they have to play twice a week.

I remember footballers having a day job, doing manual work down the pit or in the Steeelworks, walking or catching public transport to the ground, wearing hobnail boots with steel toecaps and kicking a ball, as heavy as a cannonball when wet, around a field full of mud. And they never seemed to complain of tiredness.

Could it possibly be a teeny weeny excuse for just not being good enough do you think?

Sorry. I'm a bit late to this party.
But, I've finally completed by Beer & Ball Blog from a disappointing evening at the U23s.

Thought you had retired hurt Phil. Certainly agree that it was about the first team players rather than the 23s. Pity the decent attendance didn't get to see Smith and Hallam linking up. Jordan was a bit lost as a wing back.
I agree with your observations although another 45 for Callum Semple was encouraging, he looks a lot stronger than I remember him. We missed Stevie Mallon in the opening half as well. All together a disappointing result but this is a reserve team and is used to benefit the main squad. Still think the 18s are the final Academy group Be interesting to see who plays next Monday. Some of the young players seem to find playing at the Lane daunting and nerves play a part, a bit of a worry for the coaches I think
