Pre-Match View From Wolves

Purely Wednesday-esque. When we played Wolves at Cardiff in 2003, that was a Final - the Play-off final. Then, as now, we fell short whereas Wolves went up to the Premiership. Then the fun began...

First game back? Lost 5-1 at Blackburn. Next? Lost 0-4 at home to Charlton. Next up? Lost 1-0 at Man. Utd. Next? A 0-0 draw at home to Portsmouth. Then lost 2-0 at Southampton followed by a 5-0 home defeat to Chelsea. They finally won their eighth game, 1-0 at home to Chelsea. The rest of that season was punctuated with heavy defeats - 5-2 at Spurs, 4-1 at Leeds, 4-0 at home to Villa :D, 5-2 at Chelsea. With just seven wins from 38 games, Wolves finished rock-bottom and resumed their rightful place - in The Championship. Their top scorer that season was Henri Camara with seven goals. (Camara later played 23 games for the Blades).

The way the PL is structured, Wolves will probably last 2-3 seasons. They've simply 'bought' their way out of The Championship but next year they'll be playing with the big boys and will scuffle along with the likes of Bournemouth, Watford etc.

Hopefully - like in 2003-04 - they're in for a world of pain.

Remember it well - when the away fans could march round the cricket side and then march straight back when they saw the opposition. It was like a 'living' Lowry painting - a couple of hundred skinny divs. in black crombies, oversized DMs and ridiculous old gold satin handkerchiefs in the breast pocket. They probably dress the same way nowadays. Skinheads, Steve Bull and Slade. The Black Country is The Land That Time Forgot.

There’s nothing at all ironic in this position despite the fact that they bought promotion from league 1 with the largest budget of all competing clubs and posted a thumping £6 million loss last year. As an aside, Neves isn’t fit to lace Coutts’ boots.
3. Undoubtedly our win will be down to us scoring a worldy. Whenever SU lose it’s because the opposition either: a) score a worldy; b) played out of their skins, e.g. Fulham; c) got lucky, as in, Fulham scored 5 lucky goals.
4. SU got a player undeservedly sent off. As in, since when did a two footed studs up leg breaking lunge 1ft off the ground warrant a red card??? Flecks’ perfectly legitimate well timed tackle was deemed worthy of a red by the overly officious referee of their encounter with Bristol City. Korey Smith, the villain of the piece for successfully influencing the referee due to his theatrics, stupidly took things way too far by actually going off injured. Yes, he went off injured and the knuckle draggers still say he was a play acting wimp. Football is now played by pansies. BC went on to beat SU but only because Fleck was undeservedly sent off and BC got extremely lucky. BC definitely didn’t deserve to win and Wilder definitely didn’t **** things up with his tactics and substitutions. P.S. Wilder is God since achieving promotion from league 1 despite his hands being tied and forced to work miracles with the largest budget in the division.
5. We were nothing special and they battered us at their place. They won’t mention us being a man down for 80 minutes.

good summary but he/she missed the bit about us hitting the woodwork 438 times this season.
 
Wolves fan here, I would just add that every team has some knobheads online spouting rubbish and you should treat those comments as such. Most Wolves fans I know see this as being a tight match that could go either way, because that’s what happens at the top end of the Championship.

We are on a massive high at the moment, particularly now that Afobe is back on loan, but you’re 2 points off the playoffs and deservedly up there with everything still to play for. First goal as always will be crucial.

Stearman will get a rapturous welcome, Evans will get polite applause and Leon unfortunately will get a bit of abuse (but that’s fans for you and just shows that fans don’t all have the same viewpoint).

I'm interested in what their business plan is. How their owners expect to recover their investment. I assume that's their aim and it's not just a vanity project, something to show off to their mates with. I understand that promotion will give them £180m but they'll have to spend the bulk of that to be competitive. Look at Brighton this season, they've spent decent money on transfers and wages and may still go down.

They don't have an international profile like Man U, which earns them ridiculous amounts through various income streams, or a 60,000 seater stadium they can fill at £50+ per ticket like Arsenal.
Will they look to develop Wolves as a brand? Difficult to do unless you win things and play in Europe.

Will they try to run the club at a profit? It's feasible in the PL but the profits tend to be relatively small in relation to turnover.
Will they look to cash in on the increase in the value of the club by selling it on? If so, will they find a buyer? If Ashley is only being offered £200m for Newcastle (plus some contingency payments) what would Wolves be worth? And what type of people will buy them? Venture capitalists?

I don't fully understand why these owners come in and what they hope to achieve in the long term. They remind me of super rich versions of the people you saw on Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmare's, who buy a restaurant without any knowledge of how to run it and see their hard earned savings disappear as they make mistake after mistake.

All three of your ex players are doing well for us, Evans being the surprise bonus as at last it looks like we have found someone to replace the injured Coutts. I agree first goal will be crucial if you get it I fear we are in for a long hard afternoon. We are currently set up to play better away from home when teams come at us. It will be interesting to see how far we have come playing against the league leaders away. The following comment on one of your forums did make me smile he must have only watched the second half of the game against Villa;

" I predict SU will counter on the break with the speed of a striking snail. When they do arrive in the final third they will gravitate to the corners where they will play neat little triangles before crossing to no-one in particular"

Good luck for the rest of the season but not for tomorrow.
 
A few posters on there have far too much time on their hands, but then what else is there to do in Wolverhampton?

Cheers Roy. It's amazing what's happened to them now they've been bankrolled to probable promotion!. They suddenly think that they're in the same world as Man Utd ect!!!. I just hope we can give them a game tomorrow and beat them!!. Utb

Absolutely, I remember Blackburn fans on Talksport lauding it over us because they'd joined football royalty with their league win.
 



Don’t know what their problem is. Have always find Wolves fans to be ok before this season and don’t mind them generally. Some clubs really hate us and I don’t know why.

I'm a natural pessimist & realised from an early age that there's no such thing as free lunch. If I was a wolves supporter, instead of enjoying the ride, I'd be wondering the same thing. Long term sustainable growth trumps short term success, look at Portsmouth.

I'd also be wondering about the super agent, his client & friend the manager, and the players who are coming in. The manager & agent were involved at Valencia for 15mths and they ended up in £250m of debt.
 
Don’t rate em as highly as others do. They are good but no where near as good as they think.

Looking forward to their excuses when’s it’s a tight close game. Probably a 1-1 draw or unlucky 1 goal defeat.
They’ll probably say they had an off day, like most opposition fans say when they play us.

I think the key to the match is whether they underestimate us.
If they do then they’ll be in for a shock. If they psyche themselves up for a really tough match then they should win.
Oh and we won’t be sitting back defending either.

To be honest, a lot of what they say about us is quite accurate, some of it quite funny. And in the position they're in it's natural they are going to be very confident of three points, it's a shame that some of them let that confidence change into conceited arrogance, but then again I'm sure if we were in their position some on here would be coming out with the same sort of thing.
I'll be happy with a draw on this one. Wilder had the problem of needing a bit of time to bed the new signings in whilst needing a couple of wins to break our form and set us on a decent run. This game isn't the best for either of those and has fallen at the wrong time. If we can win it will be a huge bonus, but a draw and at least one goal will keep me happy.

We had the temerity to beat them this season and deservedly so. They can't cope with the fact that a side put together for buttons beat their selection of galaticos.

They're top of the league with points to spare. If you can't give it large then, when can you? We expected to batter every side last season, because generally we did. They're having a season like we did. Can't blame them for getting excited. How many posts were there on here after ten games saying 'we're going up again, I've got a feeling'?

Completely agree with 2 and 3, but on 1 it seems likely that our wage bill was the highest in the division (as suggested in the Swiss Ramble analysis the other week). We might not have spent much in fees, but our means to pay players was greater than other clubs in the league.

Thanks for that post. I thought the lengthy post on us was very funny - it was a pretty good parody of how we see things. None of our rivals from S6 are capable of coming up with a single sentence of similar quality. Can anyone on here claim to be one of the Blades who has provoked this rant? You certainly struck home with your views..,
 
You can understand them getting carried away when they are, what is it, 12 points ahead of anyone else. I actually think we are more than capable of getting a result there but even if we lose, it won't be 3 or 4 nil as some of their fans are suggesting.

Likewise, good luck for the rest of the season. Wilder has done an amazing job so far and fully deserves all the credit that he gets. Evans is a good buy and I wish him well.

As for tomorrow, we are also set up as a much better team away from home than at Molineux. Our strength lies at the back with the 3 centre backs and with the pace we have on the break upfront. If you can cut off the supply lines to Jota and Bonatini then you can make us look a pretty ordinary team at home as Sunderland and Forest both did recently. If you leave gaps at the back, particularly when you have possession, then that's when we are dangerous. Either way we'll see. Whatever happens though, nothing will be decided tomorrow and we both have 50 points or so still to play for.
