Ale in Wolverhampton?

Im picking up vibes that the boozers in the town only allow home fans in and the bouncers check match tickets.

I've not been to Wolves before and am debating trying the town boozers or heading out in a cab to some of the classic ale houses in the hinterland. I know some Blades are also toying with Brum or Stafford.

Anyone help me out with knowledge of local boozers please?

I favour decent old fashioned proper pubs with real beer. Sports bars, Yates type and hoolie centres are not my bag, though I fully approve of em so all can find somewhere to their taste.

That's a very good question! Going on the train Saturday, the plan for us lot is four cities at least a pint in each (Sheff-Derby-Brum-Wolves ... and yes I've checked Derby and Wolverhampton are cities believe it or not!). Just checked for Wolverhampton and it looks as though there's a Wetherspoons not too far from their station ... I think that one will be the one for us

Away fans guide says no away fan boozers near ground. Many fans complaining most bars are for Home fans only even in city centre. The Wetherspoons is mentioned as having bouncers on the door checking tickets to make sure its Home fans only.

Litten Tree in city centre is mentioned as away fan friendly, sports type bar but no real ale. Some away fans drink in the bar in the Premier Inn at the back of the railway station.

Best Fish and Chip Shop is the Staveley Fish Bar on Staveley Road.

That is a classic. I'm thinking of a cab to Bloxwich from the station as it has two CAMRA National Inventory pubs there, one of which goes by the simply marvelllous name of The Romping Cat. As it's my birthday and our lass is coming I'm hoping it may give her some fruity ideas...

A word of advice, Bloxwich is a long trek from Wolverhampton station and will cost a fair bit by cab. The centre of Wolverhampton is a bit like a zombie war zone for pubs, but I would suggest the Giffard Arms on Victoria Street, which is city centre, close to the ground, quirky, spit and sawdust kind of place, but should be ok for you.

Think White Lightning is the tipple on choice but the more "hip" drinkers like a pint of Marstons "incest" or Banks "Six Fingers Pale Ale" while showing off their patchwork jumpers and loon pants to their close female relatives/dates.

I thought this was going to be about the taste of Wolverhampton Ale...., I was going to offer a taster, I've just had a large mug of tea, so anybody interested, if you wanna give me 15-20min to put dog out ont garden, I think the cold will trigger my piss valve, so I should be able to offer you around a pint of the finest golden liqueur. It's an acquired taste, slightly cloudy, with a hint of fish in the after taste.

Venture out to the Black Country, Tipton, Sedgeley, Smethwick, for some traditional pubs and very good ale. Daniel Batham’s, Sarah Hughes, brewery pubs are good choices.

Agreed. The Beacon is excellent and fits the bill for what the OP is looking for.

Venture out to the Black Country, Tipton, Sedgeley, Smethwick, for some traditional pubs and very good ale. Daniel Batham’s, Sarah Hughes, brewery pubs are good choices.

Brum best bet on train, Wellington, Sun on Hill, Briar Rose Spoons, etc, close to New Street, train to Wolves 20 mins max.

Probably The Vine on Lichfield Road? Just leave plenty of time to get back into Wolverhampton before the game as the road in is usually gridlocked on match days.

Mind you that was 2012 so don't know if its still there. Otherwise all guides say no parking near ground apart from Club car parks and recommend parking in the town 10 minutes away.

For future reference, though perhaps not next season now. The Great western was fantastic and the Bathams best bitter a revelation. So good went twice! Got into all the pubs though there was only 2 of us and we don’t look lairy. Gifford Arms was a throw back metal bar with led zep on the jukebox. Dog and doublet a coal fire and exotic bar maid. Salters for salters beer. Lichgate for beer range. Posada an architectural and unaltered highlight. The combermere for the tree growing in the outside gents and live music.

And yes the boozers were the highlight of the day.

For the record, if you're going next season when we play them in the Prem ( ), we were asked to show home end tickets going in to the Wetherspoons (moon under water) before the match, and then when we said we were wolves fans who weren't going to the game but wanted to watch it on the big screen bouncer asked to see ID before letting us in. Definitely felt a bit OTT.

Was also in the Great Western yesterday. Started out up at Sedgley at the Britannia, a Daniel Batham's pub. Then went on to the really excellent Beacon Hotel at Sedgley, that I recommended to you. Was gutted to find it was shut at 3pm! So ended up going down to the Great Western. Had a nice pint of Holden's Special and then back on the Batham's again. Ended the day with a trip back to Sedgley to visit the Beacon Hotel. This is the home of Sarah Hughes brewery and the beer there tops just about anything else in that area imo. Worth checking out on your next visit to Wolverhampton, Walsall or nearby places. Link below:
