For me, we need to get back to the same team/tactics of early season. We started to go downhill once Coutts got injured (understandably), but we now seems to have an adequate replacement in Evans. With this in mind, I'd be playing:-

Moore
Baldock Bash Stears Jack Lafferty/Stevens
Fleck Evans
Duffy
Leon Sharp

I know Sharp hasn't done much recently, but 9 goals this season shows he knows where the back of the net is. I cannot for the life of me understand why we've dropped Duffy either!!

I would have to be a complete contrarian and go 4-2-3 -1.

Moore
Baldock Stears JOC Stevens
Fleck Evans
Brooks/Thomas Duffy Holmes
Leon

I think this a great alternative tactic and your selection gets a thumbs up from me.

My only issue, would be all but one of our attacking midfielders would be in the starting lineup, which leaves us limited in terms of substitutions/rotation.

Sharp is a tough one.

Still a great finisher and he’ll never lose his finishing ability, big positive influence In the changing room too.
But when he plays he hardly touches the ball and hardly contributes. It’s as though we’ve got 10 men.

Suspect he’s not quite quick or sharp enough against defenders at Championship level.
At least Leon and Donaldson have more physicality and can contribute that way even when not playing well.

Don’t think we have anything to lose though, i’ll go with whatever Wilder decide.
He sees them all in training, studies the videos and player data and he’s paid to make these decisions.

The weird thing is although recent results have been poor, we have been playing consistently well.
I always say results eventually catch up with performances.
Keep playing well, consistently creating more chances than the oppositon and eventually you’ll win games.

billys all round play has. never been brilliant which is just as well because if it was he’d be at real madrid.. however he knows how to score goals. you can’t learn that.. it’s. much more valuable asset than running about a lot(basham) and picking the ball out if the net(moore)

Can't see it mate. Tufty has already said 3 at the back is his system...

I do think some of the best football we've played this season was with Clarke & Brooks as a front two so would like to see us try the number 9 and number 10 partnership as opposed to the current tactic of playing two number 9's which seems far too static.

Alternative would be 4-3-2-1. You could then have two of Brooks, Thomas, Duffy and Holmes on the bench (unless Duffy plays in the middle)

Moore
Baldock Stears JOC Stevens
Fleck Evans Leonard/Lundstram/Duffy.These three now have more defensive responsibility)

Duffy Holmes/Brooks/Thomas (these two are now more attacking, with little defensive responsibility).
Leon

I think the problem is the opposition know how we play now, we are still trying a similar tactic to what we did at the start of the season. I don't think billy is good enough to start against 70% of the teams we come up against.

Villa were fantastic last night at defending and creating a goal from one of their star players. If we got o'connells goal though it could have been a different game and we wouldnt be having this discussion!

Just go with whatever wilder wants!

Aka the Christmas tree.

Let's not overreact. Villa are one of the best teams in the league. They should get autos. They've got one of the most expensive squads to have ever been assembled in this league. We went toe-to-toe with them and lost by conceding a last-minute winner. No need to change a system.

That said, I agree with OP. I think that's Wilder's favoured formation. But playing against Villa, with all of their attacking threats in midfield, meant bringing in Leonard to make us a touch more solid.

I think a bigger issue is the persistence with Clarke. I'd go Wilson and Donaldson up top against Wolves.

Could have posted that almost word for word myself mate

Yep. Or just go with the two in midfield and keep the three at the back with wing backs.

I think we should always played a number 10,somebody who can unlock defences, play others in,that someone to me is Mark player of the season Duffy.

Although there's much in what I've read above to agree with, context is what needs reminding us of what we're capable of. Last night we played excellently in the first half, then we came out for the second half as if the drinks had been spiked. Bottom line, it's all about personnel, so quite possibly we'll need new recruits during the summer to invigorate our existing system. Younger versions of our existing forward options (I mention this as our current lot are generally into their '30s and this will need addressing) are what we'l need, and forwards who can score cost, not unless Wilder can find alternatives in the lower divisions for doable sums. Otherwise we're talking about spending millions, how else do you explain the valuation of Madine for £6 million?

Time to go spain 2012:

4-6-0 formation.

If anything it will confuse the fuck out of wolves when the teamsheets go in.

Should've started with Leon n Donaldson up top, and brought Duffy on with Holmes when we took off Leonard and Evans.

I think Wilder will play the same team against Wolves. We looked very well balanced and will beat 90% of the teams in this league, even possibly Wolves...
A real shame last night that O’Connell’s header wasn’t a foot lower and Wilson’s overhead kick wasn’t a foot to the right.

Excellent post IMO

Mine's very close to that but I have a preference for 4-1-2-3 which is the formation Villa adopted some ten games ago with outstanding success.

I know Tufty has said, and is still saying, that he will persevere with 3 at the back but, whilst I greatly admire the man, I'm beginning to think he's being overly stubborn about this and should at least give an alternative formation a chance. After all , we' ve hardly set the world on fire with the existing one in the last dozen games so what's to be lost ?

Furthermore, with the recent recruitments, we now have the players who could operate successfully in what has been my preferred format for many years and my line up would be :-

-----------------Moore........................
Baldock Stearman. Wright. O'Connell
.............. Lundstram......................
............Evans.........Fleck..................
Holmes.........Clarke...........Duffy / Brooks

This system allows the full backs to get forward and create a five man forward line, with the holding midfield player dropping in to make a back three when they are up there.

Last night we lined up with five players in midfield and not one of them was a creative , natural attacking player hence the few opportunities for Clarke and Wilson, both of whom have come in for unfair criticism IMO

Wolves will be expected to attack us more than Villa did last night. It may work in our favour. (It might not, they could just swarm all over us but I don't want to be too negative). I'd be very happy if we just frustrated them all game and nicked a last minute winner.

I think the formation itself is fine, it's just some elements of how we attack solid defences that needs a slight tweak.

Realistically the only formation change I could foresee would be a change to 3:4:2:1 from the current 3:4:1:2.

UTB

I think it is time for a change in formation especially if we are not going to attack through the middle.
