Duffy Vs Holmes

With Duffy playing today, do you think Holmes or Duffy will start against Villa?

Personally happy with either option and I do think as the season goes on there may be place for both of them with Clarke up top. Exciting times with schoolboy looks back for the Wolves game

I think we'll go with an unchanged team from Norwich personally. Duff off the bench though. Don't think he did himself any favours yesterday, his runs were great but as above, his set pieces were shite.

He just had an off day, in that respect. 8 assists so far this season, most of which have been from deadballs suggests he doesn't need to work on his deliveries. He has also put it on a plate on more occasions only for players to miss the odd sitter.
His shooting however...? Probably the only weakness in his game.

I think Duffy is a little off form at the moment so I would give Holmes a go. But when Duffy is on his game hes brilliant, ie, against Leeds etc so its a tough one.

Wilder has signed a player in Holmes, that is in competition for Duffy’s place in the team, surely it’s logical to discuss on here, who is likely to play?

I thought Duff had a really good second half yesterday, he seemed to be involved in almost everything good we did.

That said having played the full 90 yesterday I can see him being on the bench again Tuesday.

I have seen Ricky Holmes play when he was at Chelmsford. He was and still is an excellent player. I hope we can play both him and Duffy together. They are both players that run with the ball at the opposition defence. Exciting times ahead I hope.

People are quick to slate Duffy if every single set piece or cross delivery doesn't land on a teammates head. That criticism usually overshadows his all round game which during his time with us has been excellent overall.

Duffy is a key player and without him we look poor in possession.

I don't think either will start against Villa.

Not sure which way we should approach it really. Villa aren't much of a possession based team and we're not a counter attacking team so playing with 3 deeper midfielders at home doesn't seem like the right thing to do.

On the other hand, it's probably more important not to lose this game because if we do it'll be very hard to finish above Villa. And we will be more solid with the midfield that started at Norwich.

Duffy was totally off form in the 1st half yesterday,does he fell threatened by the arrival of Holmes,Duffy might be a type of player that does not thrive under a threat,unlike Baldock who knows Freeman is now back on the "grass" (Wilder said so) and Baldock yesterday was top class all game.

Wilder has got a myriad of midfield options now.

Don't go getting your hopes to high about Holmes, because according to Charlton fans Holmes delivery has been equally woeful.

To be honest Stretch I would think overall that Holmes is a better dead ball specialist but at the moment Duffy deserves his place in the side. Thought second half he was working really well with George and giving them a few problems.

2nd half he seemed to spend more time wide right, like you say working closer to Baldock. He struggled more centrally before that.
Holmes will be a quality addition, both free kicks and goals from open play. It will be good having them both and Brooks in the squad.

The fact that Duffy is usually blowing out of his arse after 60 minutes answers the question - Both. Whoever starts is irrelevant, Wilder will decide on this depending on who the opposition is and the tactics he is going to employ.

Watch him. He cuts inside every time. Ryan Flynn got slaughtered for exactly the same. Stephen Quinn too for always cutting back inside.

I thought, like many on here, that Duffy had an “off day” yesterday with some misplaced passes and poor quality set piece kicks. Better in the second half.

Having watched the extended highlights, he was involved in everything, and really did play some skilful and intelligent balls. If that was an off day, he was still in with a shout for motm. Love watching him play.

I’ve seen Holmes 3 times in the last 12 months other than against us. I have to agree with my Charlton supporting mate that while he promises a lot, is skilful, runs at the opposition, loves to attack, somehow he hangs on too long and doesn’t bring his teammates into play the way Duffy does. Could be very different in a different team with other players moving better off the ball around him. Hope so, because he looks like he could be a quality, exciting player for us. Gets fans sitting forward/standing up when he gets the ball and looks forward. I really hope he exceeds my expectations. He will have to in order to get my vote over Duffy.

With Duffy doing the full 90 yesterday I reckon he won't be starting, definitely on the bench as an impact sub.

Weather or not Holmes starts will be based on what wilder sees in training although he may get higher priority so wilder can see what he can do. But he won't start just for the sake of it in a game this important.

We've got at least three options;
Duffy starts.
Holmes starts.
Neither start, we line up like we did against Norwich and one comes in if we need to increase our attacking threat.
I think CW wants us to be a bit less predictable than the first half of the season, to give the opposition managers something to think about.
Then there's Brooks. He may be more ready than we think.
None of the above would surprise me. The starting line up will be based on how CW thinks we can win the game and the changes will be determined by how the game pans out.
We've gone quite a long time being able to pretty much name our first team week in week out and it's good that we've got options now.

It's intriguing & very difficult to predict. Will CW go for the "solid" option as at Norwich? Will he use one playmaker or the other? (I feel, from listening to his last two interviews, that he's itching to start Holmes.) Could he even go for the "two tens" option he talked of pre-Preston, playing Holmes & Duffy as inside-forwards either side of Clarke?

Impossible to tell what's going to happen. Which is great, because Steve Bruce is in the same boat.
