Time for a re-think on this? In a competion that's dying, would it be a problem to allow a player to appear for 2 clubs. It would have added a bit more interest and probably a bigger gate if we thought the new players might feature.

No. It's all about not buying quality to extend the Cup run I believe. Same reason we have a transfer window system

Fancy Man City signing Hazard and him playing in the final against Arsenal and getting a winners medal.

I agree. The cup isn't a priority so clubs aren't going to make signings on the basis that it will benefit them in the cup. The transfer window means after the fourth round clubs can't sign players anyway.

It needs some fairly radical ideas to breathe a bit of life into it in my opinion.
Semi finals need to be away from Wembley for a start.
I'd scrap replays and penalties....extra time in the event of a draw, and if no winner after 30 mins, 2 players from each team are withdrawn every 10 mins. Literally survival of the fittest!
I'd also regionalise at least some of the earlier rounds which could boost attendances both by reducing travel and increasing chance of derby matches. There's enough of a big club North South split to make this balanced.
Appreciate the traditionalists having kittens but it's dying on it's arse!

Radical ideas like.......

Every game kicks off at 3pm Saturday.
The draw is at 1pm Monday lunchtime in the UK and on the radio.
Every club plays a full strength team (Clubs fined if you don't...similar rules to the Checkatrade trophy about how many players played in the last game)
The semis definitely not at Wembley.
The final at 3pm on a Saturday.
Replays...as many as necessary to get a result.
If a team doesn't agree with this then they are not allowed to enter!

The magic of the cup is not dead, it has just been tinkered with too much because of the Premier league and Sky money.

If it's a draw after 90 minutes they should just have a big fight and last man standing wins.

FAR too much common sense in there mate ....... this is the FA we're talking about ........ if its sensible it won't be considered o_O

And it doesn't make provision for the bloody Sky TV or the plod to stick their oar in and piss about with the kick-offs

Yep I agree about that being common sense.
The FA should take back control of the competition. Grow some balls and tell the media what they can have, not the other way round. If a certain media company says no some other one will step in. Back to 3pm on a Saturday for the final again would be great. As Blade for Sale says early rounds reginalised would also be a good idea.

Talking about rules, I feel that no league game should be played until the weekend after an FA cup weekend. Everyone has a midweek league game so there is little to no chance of anyone putting out a full strength team. Personally I think we should do is have a full christmas program and then have 3 straight weeks of FA cup football, just like they do in Spain and Italy (Well a similar format). Let the clubs and not the fixture dates decide what teams they put out.

Tomorrow I imagine the only people we might see who are going to start against Villa are Basham and Baldock and people are moaning about why other fans don't have an appetite for going.

Yeah, with the transfer window in force I don't see this being anywhere as big an issue as it used to be

The 'romance' of the FA Cup is all about who you are drawn against and what stage of the cup your team has reached.

Ipswich away followed by Preston at home in rounds 3 & 4 make it easy to say the competition is 'dying on its feet.'

Can't imagine Lincoln City felt it was 'dying on its feet' last season. Similarly our exploits in 2014 resulted 'cup fever' as we took on and beat teams higher up the league to ourselves in front of high attendances at the Lane.

If we win on Saturday and draw one of the top four (home or away) then the 'romance' will return.

Old timer

I like the fact that there are loads of televised games, and the TV money is a life-saver for smaller clubs and a massive incentive to progress.

Is the practice of players being cup-tied if they play for one team in the competition a Europe-wide UEFA thing (like limiting players to playing for 2 teams per season), or is this a purely UK quirk?

I think it applies to the Champions League and maybe the Europa League but I'm not sure about the domestic competitions.
