The strange one was Thomas missing out.

I don’t say that because he scored but because there was no one for that role on the bench.

Duffy needed replacing like he always does with And it’s usually Brooks who of course isn’t fit so Thomas should have got a spot on the bench.. unless he wants fit..

Any other game, against any other opposition and I have zero doubt he'd have yanked Lundstram and Stearman and thrown on two attackers.

However, he was acutely aware that a 0-0 and moral victory was much more important than conceding a late winner because we lost shape...

I agree, but I was still surprised he didn’t make a few straight swap sub e.g. Leonard on for Lundstram just to try and freshen things up.

I’m not sure it would have changed things massively. So it’s not really something to critise Wilder on.

I don’t agree with the moral victory comment, at home against 10 men to a team with injury problems isn’t a moral victory. It’s more a case of a draw being better than a defeat in a derby. But I don’t blame Wilder, a defeat would have been a big blow.

I'm not sure what bringing on Billy would have achieved as we weren't creating any chances. I'd have taken a defender off and added another midfielder. I thought we were brave and didn't play for draws. Tonight seemed like a cop-out. To be fair though, if we'd have gone for it and lost, everyone would be pissed off.
it would have lifted the crowd if nothing else and anyway he was ‘bound’ to score :D
bill it is your dess-tin-eee (in a deep voice)

Only explanation for Wilson over Billy was Pace.
Something different to try and open them up, but it failed.

No idea if the Don was struggling, but u simply don’t take off your top scorer. Duffy has that ability to open sides up, so can understand him wanting to keep him on, but is he at his best when he’s tiring?
I said at start, that with all the new lads on the bench, that it was unlikely they would get on in midfield unless we had an injury. Too big a game to chuck someone on for a debut IMHO.
So what could he have done differently?

IMHO, kept on the Don unless he was goosed, take off Stevens and go to a 4 at the back. Bring on Billy and get him in between Clarke and Don. Push on the fullbacks, get Lundstram to sit and shield the ball out to their lump up fronts feet.
But it was tough with them basically defending their 18 yd box. We had little option but to get balls into the box as there is no space to thread a pass, so you have to get down the sides and in behind. We did that a fair bit, but the delivery from Baldock (bar one for the Dons header) was poor, and Stevens wasted a few positions with a poor ball. Also would have liked to see a shot more when in the box rather than turning out and laying back for someone to set and then cross/start again. It was as if they were more nervous the longer it went on.

Other than that, maybe Evans for Duff? Leonard’s shooting threat? But even than it was still a huge game to get thrown into after only a few days at the club.

I thought CW played the safe hand last night very uncharacteristic & against his mantra normally , he came in for a lot of critism for going for it in the Bridtolmzcity game and coming out empty handed & I think the fact we were playing the pigs may poss have influenced things also .
Totally agree re-Nathan Thomas as I’ve posted in other thread ,

Moral victory at all for them how so ???
A £50m La Liga squad that’s parked the bus for 90mins against a team that was assembled for less than there subbed CF .. oh ho2 the massive have changed looks like there’s a very large shadow from the S2 area that has covered South Barnsley

Wilson was brought on because he has pace whilst Billy is as quick as a three legged dog. I would think that much is obvious.

The only change that would have made any difference would be Brookes and he is still ill.

Switching for a striker with pace would have made perfect sense against a defence that wasn’t sitting deep and that was allowing at least some space to run into. It made little sense given the system Wednesday had displayed for the previous hour. We weren’t going to suddenly thread balls through to get him clean through on goal in acres of space – those sort of opportunities were completely restricted.

Wilder isn't immune from criticism and last night it was bizzare bringing Wilson(who came on more as an attacking mid) on ahead of Sharp.

That clearly says to Sharp you're now 4th choice and not wanted.

Agree, Wilson looked like he’d never played with any of the other players to form any pattern to break them down. This obviously is the case and he needs time. Wilder said he thought he looked bright, I thought he was running into blind alleys.

I’d have taken Stevens off, pushed Fleck left, where he was starting to have some success and brought Leonard on to drive at the heart of Wednesday’s brick wall.

A frustrating evening.

To be fair I thought there were 5 or 6 times a cross flashed across the goal with no one there on the 6 yard box. That would’ve been Sharp.

I’m not keen on the options people are claiming we failed to use. Ideally, against ten men we sacrifice a wingback for a proper winger. Without Brooks we cannot do that.

All the options we had we pretty much like for like. We desperately needed a player who can commit defenders. Only Fleck managed to do that all game.

Clarke has become untouchable in the eyes of the management. And 99%+ of our fans. Not mine.

Based on recent performances, and in particular last night, for the life of me I can’t understand why. I understand he is well in credit, but on merit, Clayton should have stayed on and Clarke pulled last night.

In view of this I am increasingly concerned. The faith shown to Clarke looks misguided and misplaced from my perch. And don’t get me started on the armband. For a player / man known to be a massive introvert, this appears bizarre at best.

Harsh, but I wonder if hindsight will ultimately reveal we should have taken Villas money when we had the chance ? Time will tell ;)

And I agree with others in that if Sharp can’t get 10-20 minutes in a game like that, the writing does indeed look to be on the wall.

I wonder if geeseguy is on the lookout for a striker ?

Not wanted?

Or his form isn't quite what it has been and that's showing in training as well.

And it begins.......

Wrong.

It, as you refer to it, began some time ago. As you well know.

Yes and you shut up when he was scoring goals. Maybe a critique of the rest of the team rather than focusing solely on Clarke would give your comments some validity.

I mean, " untouchable in the eyes of the management and 99% 0f our fans" and you still believe, after posting those comments yourself, and Clarkes performances you know what you're talking about?

Has it even crossed your mind that, as unbelievable as it may sound, 99% of our fans may have been totally absorbed by this purple patch he has had, and in view of this, are perfectly happy to cut slack when form is, well, significantly less than purple, as was apparent from minute 1 through minute 90 last night ?

No doubt it is a purple patch. An unbelievable one in terms of goals as it turns out.

But when form drops off, I’ll look to reasons as to why and give my critique as I see it.

And you are wrong about shutting up. Look back, if you need to.

Truth is, some observers are more able to spot these things than others. It comes from experience, understanding, and a knowledge of the game that will usurp the vast majority. I make NO apologies for this. It’s a statement of FACT.

Now, if this puts me at direct loggerheads with 99% of our fans, and indeed our manager and assistant as it turns out, than I’ll live with that.

Time will tell !

You know more than Wilder, the management team and 99% of the fans, even though Wilders decision to play him and Clarkes goals have proved your initial claims about him totally wrong?

Okay......

Which is why he's still getting the benefit of the doubt.
He and Donaldson have done ok for the last few games.
Eventually if the combo continues goalless, CW will change it and Billy will return.
I think it's called 'management' :)

I don't happen to think your views have less substance than other posters. What I do think is that given what you've referred to as our 'purple patch' we're able to view what's happening with more consideration than we've been allowed previously. Of course there'll be disagreements on a forum, and on this particular forum disagreements come thick and fast. It can be robust, volatile, and often comes with a waspish turn of phrase born out of nothing more than a mild curiosity with.....well, waspish commentary!

Last night I mentioned what you referred to, cutting Wilder a little slack. This was in the context of an avalanche of highly critical opinions from left, right, and sundry. I wasn't suggesting that the criticisms weren't deserved, but that as poor as we were it was relative. Of course we could have done this, that, and whatever, but we didn't, and I can't for one moment imagine that Wilder and Knill are overjoyed to have dropped two points. I happen to think that because we've done so well that there are posters who can almost see the cold light of promotion just in front of us, but with performances such as last night we're clutching defeat from the arms of success. Thus the sense of outrage that spews forth, and there's no thought of being mindful about the fact that we have a really good manager, no, let's just pour aches of criticism Wilder's way. By all means do so, and in many cases the criticism was considered, well thought through and worth discussing. But sometimes it's relentless, often to the point where to offer a different opinion results in pithy, sometimes needlessly brutal, and if not brutal then nearly always caustic responses.....that's ok, I can take it, but it doesn't mean it's acceptable to act like the pack leader of a lynch mob.

Dronnie, you're never far from offering your opinion, and you usually manage to offer something worthy of a good read. But I do wish that those who consider it good sport in trying to belittle others (not you I should add) would take a deep breath before committing their thoughts to the pages of the forum. I'm not one for suggesting censoring anyone (well maybe a racist or homophobe, or anyone prone to hate filled sentiments), just that a little consideration before a post is sent would result in something more constructive, or at least capable of provoking a positive set of possibilities.

Back to Wilder, you remember him doncha? We're in good hands, and until he's taken us to the Premiership I'm sure he won't rest. He's not infallible, never claimed to be if memory serves, and he'll make mistakes. What he will do though is continue to take us on that upward incline that has become our norm since he arrived. Finally, I hope we'll continue to read and enjoy all shades of viewpoint on this forum. I doubt that unnecessary unpleasantness will disappear, but I won't lose sleep whether it vanishes or not.

Key words in that statement.

A very balanced read. Bravo.

I’m not at all sure being belittling is apparent in my post. A strong opinion that is way off the kilter and directly apposing the conventional view of a lot of others, including management, well I’ll hold my hands up to that.

Back to Wilder.

I have a Chris Wilder T shirt. I wear it with pride. The man has single handedly restored my pride of being a Blade again. Some of our football (in fact most of it to be fair) over the last 18 months has been joyous, mesmeric and any number of other words you could care to mention.

My disagreement with his handling of ONE particular situation / individual really should not detract from this.

I agree with you, especially with the captaincy.

Clarke seems to have turned into our Harry Kane, when he’s a run of the mill Championship striker who is going to suffer from dips in form like the rest of our strikers.

He’s not in great form so therefore should be dropped if he doesn’t get back to better form.

I didn't infer that you belittled anyone, that's not what I associate with your posts. Generally, an opinion that is wishy-washy serves little purpose, so by all means give any post your best shot.

I also recognise that your post dealt with one particular game, so I'm not taking anything out of context, other than your dissatisfaction with last night's game.

Overall, you're a poster who's a committed Blade. You're passionate, as so many on here are, and no one should apologise for wanting the best for our team. In some respects I think we've underwhelmed for so long that now that we're doing comparatively well there's almost a shock to our systems that causes all manner of reaction and wide-eyed surprise to result in the type of posts I've already mentioned. I suppose it's human nature, to be irrational, to err on the side of what we wish would happen, so our judgements can be all over the place.......just as this post is doing ;).....so apologies if there was any suggestion of attack on my part, there wasn't and neither was any intended. Yeah I think that's why we didn't go for it to be honest and I'm glad. I'd have been gutted if we'd gone gung-ho and conceded on the break. Against any other team I recon we would have made more positive changes though.

Very strange Billy didn't get on but to be honest I doubt he'd have had an impact. Two big centre halves and no room in behind them so I think it would have just been the ball getting played up to him and him looking for a free kick, which inevitably he wouldn't have got !

Completely missing the point, as it turns out, but seeing as YOU wish to turn this in to a purely goal scoring related debate, please offer your opinions as to why golden boy has 1 in 6.

I await your response with baited breath !
