Not sure he did actually. He wasn't selected regularly to show what he had but hey ho, let's hope if we do get Wilson he proves to be an asset.

Exactly he wasn’t selected, because Wilder didn’t think he was good enough

Wasn't he only here for two games and he featured in both, before he got injured and went back?

That's what i thought too, LJ. Not sure if it was only 2 games or more. If my memory serves me right, he hadn't had time to settle in to the squad before gettin injured and i am pretty sure he had a number of appearances on / from the bench.

And you have this on Wilder's say so? Riley played twice, truth is he wasn't here that long before he was injured. When he did play he looked good, so how you arrive at the view that Wilder wasn't impressed is puzzling.

Riley signed on 17th January after recovering from injury at Man U. He played on 11th and 14th February before dislocating his shoulder and returning to Manchester.

So not here that long before being selected....then with the injury he received it took the stuffing out of the loan, a pity as the boy looked good.

... but regardless of what we think of Riley, it’s nonsensical to suggest we shouldn’t sign Wilson because we didn’t like someone else from their academy. It’s like not signing Harry Maguire because Ironside wasn’t very good.
Agreed but some of their players come with an attitude I am a Manchester United player or have been, therefore I should walk into your team irrespective of how I play.

So apart from Cofie and Twiss and Joe Riley and Bryan Robson...what have ManUre ever done for us, eh?

You missed these two Mark's and both midfielders. Neither were legends granted and the latter was before my time but I remember Mark Todd who is still working for United.

You forgot about them rolling over and allowing a certain shower of cheating cockney wankers to tickle their belly in return for 1st dibs on a world class striker of dubious ownership....

Mark Dempsey , tried hard but nothing special

Who was the midfield player who we were due to sign from Man U, Patterson??
He was announced as being the guy to build a team around and how lucky we were to get him etc etc and he failed a medical or something else happened to call it off at the v last minute.
One for silent I think

Steve Paterson joined us from Man U in summer 1980, the fee being £60,000. Suffered an ankle injury pre-season and then was forced to retire. He later managed Inverness, Aberdeen and Peterhead. Had battles with Alcoholism

Just bought the book on Amazon thanks to your post Silent, Cheers.

He signed on 17th January.

We played Gillingham in a hard fought 2-2 draw, 4 days later. UNUSED SUB
We lost at home to Fleetwood 3 days after that (using 2 attacking subs at HT). UNUSED SUB
Wimbledon at home (4-0 win) on 4th Feb UNUSED SUB
Petrborough away CAME ON AS SUB
Bristol R away STARTED
----- injured in training -----

Which game exactly would you have played him in??? There's an argument he could've come on against Wimbledon as the game was won, however, Wilder chose to use his last sub to bring Carruthers back on for only his 2nd appearance after being injured on his debut at Southend.

Where there any players from that era that didn't suffer from alcoholism? It's always been a brutal business.

Think this could be a thread on its own , generally I’ve not been impressed by many of the ex Man U players we’ve had , either been past it seeking easy dosh or just plain and simple crap.
The best two I can think of were Mark Todd , heart of a lion and Paul McGrath , sheer quality (I know he didn’t come direct but still playing for them along time)
