Non league players

So, back to the OP; there's a few in the PL that have come from non league but most have worked their way up through the leagues. The exceptions being Smalling and Vardy who rose fairly quickly.

On that basis, it's unlikely that more than one or two players currently playing in non league will be plying their trade in the top flight in two or three years' time. Having watched a bit on BT this season I haven't seen any stand out players yet. As an aside, Roger Johnson, who partnered Scott Dann at Brum is now playing for Bromley.

I think this is an interesting one. When I came out here in the 80's, due to work permit issues, I trained with an amateur club, before starting with my team. I remember the first few training sessions thinking how good some of their players were and wondered why they weren't playing higher. I didn't speak German so couldn't ask.

The main difference between Championship and lower league pros is consistency. Higher level pros get things right 80% of the time whereas lower league pros maybe 40% at best.
There are also physical attributes, speed, stamina, muscle makeup, lung capacity etc. All things that are down to gene pool luck. However, players who start very young and keep going through their teen years, tend to be better than those who have a break for booze and women etc. Look at how many sons of footballer's make it. Look at Iceland's national team. Selected from a total population of 350000. That means 170,000 men, 50% of which are in the age group 17-35. The results we see now came from the building of indoor pitches that youngsters play on all the time as there is f all else to do.
I did a fitness test last month for my new job. My levels were very high, despite being over 50 and relatively inactive. I spoke to the doc and he said it probably came from me being very fit till 35. He maintains, what you do between 13 and 21 sets the base for rest of your life. I'm not a doc, so I don't know.
What I am saying is that many lower league players have time out in their formative years and therefore lose out in lots of areas, fitness, skills training etc. They might show great skills in one game or two but due to the issues above can't do it regularly enough to go higher. Obviously there are exceptions.
I will add the speed of players, today, in thought and deed is way way higher than when I was playing.

When in the top division we signed Paul Rogers from non-league Sutton. That can't happen very often. As I recall, he was a solid hardworking, but unspectacular player. As were maybe most of our signings at that time. Dunno. I didn't really understand the question.

Worcester have had a few over the years... John Barton (went to Everton for a club record fee at the time in 1978), Mark Shail to Bristol City, Andy Awford to Portsmouth, Des Lyttle to Forest (via Swansea tho he was only there a few months), Darren Bullock who was pretty much Mr Warnocks blue eyed boy and he followed him everywhere for a good few seasons!

Not a non league player now, but like the look of Forest Greens Christian Doidge.

Scores goals, will play higher, and be better with better players.

A finisher.

Looks like Warnock has seen the same in him as me!

Closing in on signing him.
