"Crystal Palace's New Year resolution should be to be more like Sheffield United. The Blades propped up the old First Division table after the first game of the new year in 1991.

Dave Bassett's side had won an average of just 0.7 points per game up to then. They turned things around though and won 1.8 points per game after that and avoided relegation.

That 1.1 point per game New Year turnaround is the largest in top flight history. It’s a run that lifted the Blades from the bottom of the table to eventual safety etc.." etc

I'm amazed anyone outside of Sheffield would refer to that. It was before the PL so doesn't really count.

Can you imagine the outcry on here if the Internet had been around back then?4 points only as we played Forest on December 23rd,fast forward to a glorious Spring day in West London,as a Ooh Aah header in front of delirious United supporters, confirmed our safety

Yeah but it was under Dave Bassett and I read on here that it was boring and terrible to watch under his tenure.

I was particularly disappointed with that unbeaten run early that year beating the likes of Man Utd at home and Everton away. Full away ends with loads of noise and atmosphere and the yellow balloon orgy.

Tedious anti football times indeed, some of the worst in my 37 years watching us.

I didn't get an invite to the yellow balloon orgy. Disappointed.

The 3-2 win against Forest was fantastic.Followed by a pitch invasion...a pitch invasion! For winning a league game!! Classic.

Got to own up,I was on the pitch at the final whistle, mind I also joined in the pitch invasion at Villa, that was done just because we had scored a goal,I don't think we had scored for 10 games so it seemed entirely appropriate to go on the pitch to celebrate

Happy days/memories

Remember the noise and atmosphere of the game against Forest. The stand roofs nearly blew off.

Great feeling when we scored at Villa Park, absolute pandemonium, the West Midlands police waded in and the Villa players shit themselves; they couldn't understand what was going on. Was it Vincent Jones that scored? Needless to say their full back scored a screamer from 20 yards out to win it but somehow it didn't matter, there was such a positive belief in those days between the fans. Wish it was like that today?!

I remember that game. Our supporters really got behind the team. We played very well and did not look even remotely like a side that had still not won a league game. As you say, the noise was deafening when we scored and people were leaping around like we'd just won the FA Cup. Mind you it felt like we hadn't scored a league goal for about 10 centuries!

All I can remember is it turning into utter madness and we kept scoring a number of worldies (Jim Gannon, Mike Lake etc).

Perhaps they forgot that it used to be 2 points for a win...

I recognise you're being tongue in cheek, but for the benefit of younger fans three points for a win was nowt to do with the formation of the PL and started in the 1980’s. It used to be two points for a win, and this was arguably a bigger change to football in England than the formation of the PL in 1992. Following the formation of the PL there was absolutely no change in competition format; the same number of teams competed in the top flight, and promotion and relegation between the Premier League and the new “First Division” remained exactly the same with three teams relegated and three promoted. Later the number of top flight teams was reduced to 20, but the format remained the same.

This makes a mockery of all these “Premier League records” (which seem to be valid even when the top flight was called the “Premiership” but not when it was called “Division One”. ). "New PL records" are also insulting to those teams and individuals who performed magnificently before 1992, but whose achievements are now routinely ignored, as Sky etc want to see as many “record-breaking achievements” as possible. Its all bollocks. Football has been around for 140-odd years, not 25.

Agree with you on that. You are right that I was being tongue in cheek, though I do wonder about some of the statistics. Did somebody really go through all the years that Division 1 was based on 2 points for a win, and then recalculate what teams would have achieved had it been 3 points for a win? There are so many dodgy stats around that it is worth undermining them from time to time. For example, I think Coutts is credited with few assists; but how many times have goals come from his pass before the assist? Just because something can be counted does not necessarily mean that the numbers have any worth.
