STILL A SCOTTISH HERO ...

I agree with the title but not the post. It wasn't a great tackle and he was rightly sent off. I don't blame Fleck at all as we need his competitiveness in midfield including his strong tackling. Just happens that he got this one wrong, it happens.

Fleck is the best midfielder that we have had in a long long time and part of the best midfield we have had in my life time. Fridays tackle changes none of that.

I think Fleck is our best player after Coutts, but there was nothing heroic about that. Stupid, reckless tackle that probably cost us 3 points. He should know better and he was rightly sent off. Could have broken their guy’s ankle and were it a tackle on one of our players, people on here would want the culprit hung at dawn.

He’s been phenomenal for us so I don’t want to over-criticise, but I don’t want to celebrate him for it either.

(You also shouldn't use gay in that context, but I see the point you’re trying to make).

This rule frustrates me. Fair enough studs up is dangerous... but if he's stretching for the ball how he's how supposed not have studs up.

It was an instinctive tackle, not pre-meditated to hurt someone. He probably didn't realise how close their player was and as such it was poorly timed.

You see loads of tackles almost identical to this one every game but because the opposition player is a bit further back they're harmless.

Frankly I think he should have been booked and people should accept football's a contact sport.

Bonkers.
For me & as we’re in 2017, it’s far from a great tackle. Wind the clock back 15-20 years & maybe.

As for seeing “loads of tackles almost identical to this one in every game” - really? Where were the rest of them then on Fri night? We see lots of good tackles - not ones where the player is off the ground going in with 2 feet & studs up. Look at the rules of the game - it’s a sending off.

Keep saying it along with others, if that tackle had have been ON Fleck, people would not have been on here saying “great tackle”.

Don’t get me wrong - I think Fleck’s a great player & don’t believe there was any malice in the tackle. But it was red & I think Fleck knew it. We won’t appeal as there’s no point.

Yes - football’s a contact sport and the rules are there to stop it being a dangerous one. Sadly that tackle was classed as dangerous.

It’s a risk combative midfielders like Fleck run when they play - knowing a slight mis-time or overstretch for the ball can lead to this.

Shame. We’ll miss him for sure.

Two things that are wrong with the opening post.

It wasn't a great tackle, it was studs up and not in control, he could have broken his leg, - what would you be saying if it was the other way round?

It's not V Bristol - it's V Bristol City -
In the same way we are not Sheffield but Sheffield United.

I think you have misunderstood my meaning about 'loads of tackles'. Had their player been a split second later then no one would have even noticed. As happens plenty of times in the game.

In my opinion, a great tackler is as instinctive in his timing and precision as a great striker is at poaching goals. But as the ability relies on instinctive reactions rather than any pre-meditation, poor tackles can happen. I don't think we should take the art of a great tackle out of the game, reckless tackles yes, but I don't think Fleck was being reckless

Word for word what I was thinking. Have a gold star.

Thanks

Correct - we never talk about the tackles where no-one gets hurt or gets a red card. They’re just tackles.

Quite agree that there is an art to a great tackle & if that goes out of football, we’re all worse off.

We might never agree though that Fleck demonstrated that ‘art’ on Friday. Art is a beautiful thing - collecting a man with 2 feet & studs up ending his game isn’t art in my book. Nor in the refs. Nor in the eyes of rules.

That’s the trouble with instinct. It’s not always right and it needs help from split second logical thought that’s not over-ambitious at moments like that. It’s what pro-footballers get paid all that money for - they can do that better & quicker than me or thee.

With a striker - when their instinct goes wrong, someone in Row Z heads it back & we all laugh. Very different as a centre-mid fighting for a ball in situations like Fleck was in. Chuck yourself into instinctive tackles like that these days & expect to see red. Look at the bloke for Watford yesterday. Same deal.

Don’t think - & didn’t say - it was reckless - but still believe it was dangerous & a player got injured.
Pre-meditated to hurt him? Definitely not.

Fleck is a good player for us and we will miss him over the next couple of games
It was a bad tackle in my opinion and a deserved red card
A good tackle on Friday
was close to the end when the Bristol player tracked back and tackled our player in the box
Good clean challenge , contact with the ball first then player
He's one our own Blades .
But a bad tackles a bad tackle

Agree with some of what you said , but to say rightly sent off is plainly stupid, it was tough challenge that we want to see our plays comit, that will to win it’s what makes us United. He won the ball , the other player neshed the challenge and got hurt, sorry for him but he wimped out.

The Brizzle player has had stitches in a cut ankle..................bet he plays next game.

Sorry got to disagree.
Fleck was an idiot, he caught the player both feet off the ground Red all day.
He more than likely cost us 3 points on Friday, we were miles on top they never really looked like scoring and were poor.
He is also now going to miss 3 games at a time when we are already short in midfield.
All for a tackle made virtually in the middle of the pitch. I could part understand it if their player was in our box and about to shoot and he was trying to block the shot, but their player was nowhere near our goal and posing no real threat.
I get what some are saying about it being a mans game and all that but players now days know the rules you just can't do tackles like that anymore.

Only post of value in this thread.

Don’t need that kind of language from the OP.
3 things actually.

Well done Highbury_Blade and Punk Blade for beating me to it.

You're right and well done to the other two for pointing that out, I didn't notice it as I didn't get past the Bristol thing!!

I would like him to meet a couple of gay friends of mine to explain what he means.

One is a martial arts expert and the other is a boxer

He got the ball first , and not high , so what’s the problem

It's easy to say it was a bad tackle, but he had to challenge for the ball..I agree it was a sending off,but he was trying to make up to much ground and overstretching...he was only intent on playing the ball.
I wouldn't like to take that fight and tenacity out of his game...he was bossing it in there for me,and would have been a contender for MoM had he stayed on.

If you watch the game again the foreigner the brought on tried to kick JOC head off in the lead up to there goal , definitely wreckless certainly a foul and ended up a goal for them. It’s the way things are going for United at the moment.

It looked like a fifty-fifty challenge to me. The ref whipped out the red card very quickly and never game himself thinking time. He could have had a word with the linesmen and fourth official first.

The little shit of a manager and his coaching staff, and the Bristol players hysterical over reaction influenced a weak ineffectual referee, should have wagged his finger firmly at Flecky told him not to do that again or else, then sent Johnson to the stands.

The number 22 should have walked

I agree the game is getting more soft, which I hate, but Fleck's tackle was bad - the boy on the receiving end had to go off injured.

Fleck is still a hero - been top draw for us for 18 months.

What has that got to do with reasoned debate?

I have two straight mates who are into decoupage and landscape gardening and they are brilliant conversationalists. Granted they run like fuck at the first sign of bother but....
