O'Connell's next

Hard to fulfil your potential when you're not playing regularly. He made 18 scattered appearances for them, at a higher level and as one of 2 centre halves. Unless he was terrible, it's hardly basis on which to write him off as they seemed to. Especially when you consider that centre halves often develop a bit later.
It also requires the player to 'buy in' on what the management are trying to achieve.

Why the hell did Brentford sell him to us?

He looked like a good player straightaway. He obviously had great potential and all the key attributes for a centre half.

If they thought he was too chunky and lacked agility that's nothing that can't be improved, as we've seen. Since he's been here he's improved physically. He's leaner and more agile, and it's took him to another level. But it wasn't hard to predict that happening so to sell him for about 300k is a huge fuck up from them.

If they loaned him to us for the season we would've had to be offering £3m+ last summer to get him permanently.

Remember his start - Own goal v Southend, handball at Millwall. His confidence was low - picked up immediately after the bus beer stop after Millwall - Tufty is man manager extraordinaire.

I think we've got all bases covered now regarding contracts for key players. Anyone know of any that's in the pipeline or yet to be sorted?

Great news regarding JOC .

On the " pipeline " subject , how long is Coutts signed up for ?

Lets hope CW can keep a lid on moral in the squad at the moment too , it cant be much fun for the likes of Basham etc etc seeing their team mates snapped up on long deals when there doesnt appear to be the same for them .

Unsurprisingly i didn't watch!

But thats progress from the dullest and most clueless manager England have had for a long time.
Not sure I agree with that. McClaren, Capello and Hodgson were all pretty clueless for England. I'm not a fan of Southgate and I think he's learning on the job but he does seem to have a clear vision of where he wants to take England. He's very committed to the young players and has worked with most of them for a long time. He trusts them.

Whether he's got the skills to implement his vision is yet to be proven.

Or the flip side of this which would be the likes of Basham etc etc seeing United are willing to give decent contracts to tie players down and putting in even more effort to make themselves a vital part of the team so that they can be rewarded in the same way.....

I was worried we were going to offer him a new contract and he'd head the fucker back. Great news though. Love how none of them have hesitated at signing a new contract. Everyone to a man wants to be part of the club.

Just Duffy to sort out and we can focus on the promotion push!!!

Two years for Bash, Billy and Coutts. Three years for Freeman. https://www.sufc.co.uk/news/2017/july/new-contracts/

Four years for Fleck: https://www.sufc.co.uk/news/2017/september/john-fleck-signs/

Four years, plus a year option for Brooks: https://www.sufc.co.uk/news/2017/october/brooks-deal/

Not if theyre approaching 30 or the wrong side of 30 already e.g Clarke Duffy Basham Coutts and Sharp . Or do you think we should be offering them 4 year contracts

Unfortunately for him and a few others in the same age group the best they can hope for is one year deals when contract renewal time comes up. I think United will have learned past lessons and be quite ruthless in avoiding long term deals for ageing players. Sad to say this but it's the way to go.

As long as there's no big wage disparity there's no problem.

Contract length is related to age. O'Connell and Fleck and contracted until they're about 28, Basham and Coutts are contracted until they're about 31.

It's the way Leeds Rhinos have been doing it for many years.

The younger you are, the longer contract you will get.

Over 30 expect one or two years at the most.

7 Championships in 10 years suggest it's the right thing to do.

Not 4 years no don't be daft, but if they're looking for a 1 or 2 year extension and they see that United are currently sorting out contracts for important players do you not think that would motivate them as opposed to demoralise them?

Walker -Maguire and Oconnell ,Englands defence for the Euros 2020 ,just need a decent left back.

Walker was awful last night.
Maybe under orders not to commit forward but all he had was a backpass until the last few minutes when he got into Brazil's half and put a cross in.

Maguire on the other hand played very positively. Always looking to set something going with a pass to midfield or attack. He even had a couple of runs into Brazil's half, maybe he's been watching Jack on how it's done :-)

Agreed .

And the good thing about Wilders style of man-management is the fact that every player at the Lane right now will already know exactly what the situation is . Moral shouldnt be an issue too as all the players will look at the likes of Fleck and JOC and understand exactly what they need to do in terms of performances week in week out to be rewarded in the same way . Likewise if their age is an issue then theyll be acutely aware of this too .

One of these men head bricks.

I think it would . I think the older players will realise the clocks ticking for them whilst the younger ones , Carruthers , Stevens , Baldock etc etc will also realise exactly what it is that they need to do to be rewarded in a similar fashion .

Duffys situation is a little bit concerning though .

I suspect he didn't reach the chairman's statistics level........ shame.

Meh, don't rate him, let him go
