Most inept Blades performance you've seen

The three nil away loses against Plymouth (under Warnock) and Portsmouth (under Morgan) deserve a mention. I went to both and we were dreadful.

I started going 85/86 Middlesbrough h lost 1-0

Every game as a 7-8 year old was a time for wonderment that season. Although I was at the Millwall game I didn’t perceive it as bad as some on here mentioned.

87/88 I went to Middlesbrough and Leeds away around the same time we lost 5-0 and 6-0 also that season the Oldham home game but also Shrewsbury home losing 1-0. Shocking performances.

90s

90/91 Sunderland at home 0-2 woeful I left thinking we were Defo down that day.

99 Port Vale - say no more.

00s

People tend to forget that although Warnock has some high points there were some dire games under his stewardship-

00/01 a home game near end of season was that rubbish I can’t remember who it was against.

01/02 - this whole season just stands out as boring - never going up never going down and barely any good memories loads of shocking games.

02/03 Wolves at millennium totally inept

03:05 some shockers in this era as well - Millwall h lost 1-0 with morgs going up front. Jesus

07/08 Robson home games all inept m

08/09 was our team the most dire team that came within a game of the PL our side now would hammer this team Forest at home was shocking.

09/10 a season of sone of the worst football we’ve seen. Standout scunny at home think we lost 1=0

10/11 take your pick from ineptness which came in multiples, scunny or Watford away for me.

11/12 - Oldham home, Hartlepool home, MK dons away, Huddersfield at Wembley

12-13 was Crawley at home the worst or Yeovil away?

13/14 Weir games Notts county aside total ineptness

14/15 - Some horrors here as well losing to Fleetwood was embarrassing

15-16 we had around 3-4 good performances all season the rest was shocking but Bury away Shrewsbury home Burton home and Scunny home standouts

16/17 Southend was totally inept but that’s about it.

Has anyone mentioned the debacle at Gillingham just after signing Asaba? Got hammered 4-0. We had just signed Andy Morrison on loan, a Bullock too if I remember correctly.

Away at Ayresome Park, 17 April 1976. The season we finished bottom of the old First Division. We still had Woodward and Currie, but also in the team were Terry Garbett and Chris Guthrie. Jimmy Sirrell was our Manager. Lost 3-0 and didn't get a kick. One of their defenders scored all three.

And the beer in Middlesbrough was shit too.

United 0 Oldham 5

Still stands head and shoulders above the other crap 30 years on.

The team:

Leaning
Todd
Pike
Kuhl
Stancliffe
Smith
Morris
Philliskirk
Mendonca
Dempsey
Frain

Subs (both used): Beagrie and...Wilder

That was 2 January 1988. United had lost 4-1 at Blackburn the day before, and 3-1 at Millwall on 28 December.

Funny in hindsight that four of that team (five if you include Wilder) were stalwarts of the promotion side the following year, and Mendonca went on to have a good career though not with us. Dempsey though: even now, the sight of the nesh little twat's name makes me shudder.

We've not had many lately so I thought I'd have a good old reminisce about bygone days when the Blades were still capable of bringing us out in cold sweats with their performances.

I have some contenders in no particular order and I'm sure there are plenty others to add....

2016/17
Southend home L 0-3 (seems like a lifetime ago)

2015/16
Shrewsbury home L 2-4
Bury away L 0-1
Burton home L 0-1

1987/88
Oldham home L 0-5

For me, a game that sticks out was when we played Coventry at home on Boxing Day, either 1992 or 1993. We lost 0-3 and it was truly awful. When that Bassett side played well, it was exciting and effective but when they didn't play well it could be awful. We couldn't string two 'hoofs' (for Pinchy ) together and it's the only time I've left a game more than a few minutes early, on 66 minutes after they scored their 3rd to be exact.

2nd Jan 1988 ...0-5 at home to Oldham was my winner under the expert tuterledge of Billy McEwan.... we were beyond shocking ... at 0-3 everyone just started taking the piss rather than dishing out a round of fucks ! Nearly 30 years ago and I can still remember it vividly

.
Tony McAndrew

We drew 0-0 at home with Barnsley or Doncaster on a Tuesday night during the league one years.

I can't remember if it was Barnsley or Doncaster because I can't remember anything about the game, it was that boring.

Probably not the worst result or performance I've seen, but the only thing I can remember about that night was just how utterly shite the game was.
It was Donny. Our attack was an awful form of hoofball, I.e. Balls lobbed into the box from 30-40 yards out nowhere near any of our strikers.

Can’t be arsed to read 8 pages. But as a team or individual?

Lee Baxter individually.

Whoever we played at home just before Wilson was sacked. Dog shit. And I was one against Wilson but met him and changed my mind

1-3 Blackburn 1/1/88 - got piss wet through left after 70 mins
0-5 Oldham 2/1/88 - left after 60 mins
2-4 Shrewsbury; they really weren't fit to wear the shirt that night
0-3 Southend
0-2 Fleetwood
The only consolation is that sometimes when things get really bad it generates a reaction that sets up better times ahead. Bassett following McEwan; Wilder following Adkins; Long being replaced as first choice goalie.

Are we talking 2-3 Boxing Day when we had just got to the top of League 1 or Weir's swan song?
Doesn't really matter, both awful games.
Boxing Day pal can’t remember their CF who got the winner horrible fucker

I obviously have nothing but respect, admiration and gratitude for CW, and far be it from an amateur to disagree with his assessment, but I think he was just trying to find positives in front of the club cameras (understandably).

I was there and in my opinion, we were shocking.

It was the only time I saw us play badly all year, but we were shite and we should have lost 3 or 4.

Has anybody mentioned that dreadful evening in Bury in Feb 2016. Lost 1 - 0

That was when the lad in front of me in the queue for a pie asked if there was a vegetarian option?

The young girl serving replied......."well there's potato in the meat and potato pie".

He looked hungry, but declined the offer.

HH

Haven't read the whole thread, but honourable mentions to the Bury game, which was perhaps the closest I've come to invading the pitch and punching one of our players. I'd have absolutely embraced the lifetime ban too, it'd have been a reward.

The same season finale at home to Scunthorpe for the lap of shame. I genuinely didn't know where to look. Am I imagining it or was there about 200 people there?

Swansea away about 10 years ago on a Tuesday night and i think we got a point which we didn't even nearly deserve. Think it was Morgs with a late equaliser.

Jesus. When we're bad, we're bad aren't we.

Coventry away the same season, on TV, 0-0, awful. I reckon lad from Boro played up front on his own (Falconer). We went on the train and it took ages to get home.

Aaaaahhhh good old willy a rare bright spot in that season .... soon left us.

I posted the vid. in a 'look how far we've come' way. Four games into CW's reign, one point and he looks genuinely stressed and deserves all the plaudits that are coming his way. He's a passionate guy, unlike Nigel 'let's spend the game leaning on the tunnel wall' Clough and Bryan 'look at me standing motionless with my arms folded' Robson. Oh, and Nigel 'the biggest room in the house/pressure makes diamonds/flocks of geese and other assorted bollocks' Adkins.

In fact the one near-consistent about this thread is that the 'most inept performances' were usually accompanied by 'most inept managers'.

That’s what I was thinking. I was angry that day with what I’d seen. Little did I, or anyone, know was that day was the darkest and the dawn was coming.

And indeed. I like it when we’ve won but you can tell he’s still giving them a hard time if he’s not happy. You get the impression the players get the plaudits they deserve, but there’s no resting on laurels.

6-0 away at Man City. Coach almost broke down on the way there. Tracey sent off early doors etc etc. Coach now fully broken. Got on Sportsman coach to go home - all kicked off, somebody opened emergency exit at the back and threw something at a massive group of City fans. Got escorted out of the city by the police. Good times

Also, in no particular order
Wednesday, Wembley
Palace, Wembley
Sunderland away, play offs
Arsenal, Old Trafford
Newcastle, Old Trafford
Wolves, Millennium
Burnley, Wembley
Huddersfield, Wembley
Yeovil, playoffs both legs
Swindon, playoffs most of both legs

I'm sensing a theme

I used to live right at the top of East Bank Road. We had to walk home after that

Shield your eyes now. 24th Sept. 1996. Blades 2 Stockport 5. Our scorers G. Taylor and Petr Katchouro. Crowd: 6,850. Second leg, second round of the Coca Cola League Cup (we'd lost the first leg at Shrewsbury 1-2, Vonk.)
I went to the first leg!! Been on holiday so hasn't been to a game yet. Regretted it instantly

If you'd just listened to Sir Chris after the Leeds performance you'd say that one!

Pretty sure I saw Captain Blade come out at half-time without his cutlasses once. You'd think he'd remember it's in the name for Wilder's sake.
