Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere or if the table below doesn't line up properly.

Here is part of the league table from 2005/6 season after 16 games the last time we were promoted to the topflight:

PL W D L PTS
1. Sheff U 16 12 2 2 38
2. Reading 16 10 5 1 35
3. Luton 16 8 4 4 28

And here is now:

P W D L Pts
1 Wolves 16 11 2 3 35
2 Sheff U 16 11 0 5 33
3 Cardiff 16 9 4 3 31

makes for encouraging reading, no?

Still a long way to go of course, but we are on course at present, though 5 points worse off than that season that we ended up 2nd with 90 points. In someways this team doesn't feel as good as that one but who knows, Leon Clarke might be the Shipperly for us and we need Brookes to be our Danny Webber. UTB

Unless you’re a Luton fan!

Sorry, why are we encouraging Reading?

Luton? Seriously?

They were a force to be reckoned with back then. Carlos Edwards on the wing, Kevin Nicholls with Steve Howard and Rowan Vine upfront.

That said they did have some shite like Enoch Showunmi in their squad.

On the whole this team is better. Jags and Morgs at CB though? Sumptuous.

Aldo, add the likes of Kabba's lightning pace and skill to this current side and we'd be flying (even more than we already are)

This team is better, but so is the opposition this season.

Reading were the only decent team apart from us that season and we would have run them closer apart from a rotten month of February.

How many points did we finish on when we finished 3rd under Blackwell despite being pretty wank?

I have nothing but mediocre memories of that season, yet we finished 3rd.

This team plays far better entertaining football than the Warlock one.It also lost its way somewhat after Christmas, came good at the right time to take 12 points from last six games to get over the line.
If we do it this time we will do it in style
on the front foot ,( the wilder way )
Warlock was up to his antics promoting himself ( Portsmouth job ) which kind of up set the balance a bit .recovered it just in time.

I have nothing but mediocre memories of that season, yet we finished 3rd.

That's because we had some good players under strict instruction to grind miserably through every game within a narrow remit of staying behind the ball until it was won high up the field.

Whereas now we have players who are encouraged to trust their ability and trust their teammates. Fleck and Coutts taking the ball down under pressure in deep midfield, and passing through opponents would have caused Blackwell to drop them.

Jagielka, Shipperley and Gillespie might make the bench. I'm serious.

I never understand this sort of comparison. It is totally meaningless.
I really enjoy doing this sort of thing, with ratings from then and now but we have such a different way of playing now in comparison it truly would be a point less comparison however it's fair to say that Kenny as keeper back then is much better than either of the 2 first choices now but our top 3 strikers back then;
Shipperly, Webber, Kabba are nowhere compared to Clarke, Sharp, Donaldson

What about also comparing to the last Blades team that did back to back promotions?

Apart from Deane I don’t think any of that side would get in this.

I would certainly take Webber upfront now, not to replace anyone but as another option. I have a vivid memory of him during his loan spell where he scored and left three opposition players laying on the floor.

At that stage of the season it was Shipperley and Kabba leading the line, Kabba was on fire at that stage of the season. Only went pear shaped for him (Kabba), when Mr W***er started prating about with selection and formations.

Billy Whitehurst regularly used to leave three opposition players on the floor too, but I'm not sure he'd make the current squad either.

I never understand this sort of comparison. It is totally meaningless.

Didn't Reading win the league with a record 106 points that season? That's never been bettered by any team to date. Maybe that's our challenge then? ;)

There's a lot of these type of comparisons drawn in football. Taking two different sets of circumstances and comparing them is meaningless.

I suppose it makes for light entertainment though and it's harmless enough. As long as we don't read too much into it.
