Absolutely love Billy, but sadly as the team keep progressing his uses and ability will become more limited. Theres no doubt about it, give him a chance in the box and more often than not he will slot it away and always put in a shift in for us. Just looking at his age and he's nearly 32, do you reckon he might become even more of a cult hero being that go to player of the bench for the last 15 mins when we are desperate for a goal and pushing everything forward?! Can't seem him being first choice as first team striker as a top championship club sadly so hope he becomes and savours this new role?! Please smack me back in my box if i'm talking bollocks!

Behave, away from home he has been limited this season. I've been to the riverside etc. and he has been non existent cos he cant hold the ball up or help us quickly break away on a counter. He is still going to be first choice at home for at least another season or so agreed, but does have his limitations.

He is a first team striker at a top Championship.

It's true that none of our first team strikers have age on their side, and we clearly need to look at long term options. But currently, Billy is our leading scorer, one of the leading scorers in the Championship, and as blistering pace has never been part of his game, he has plenty left to contribute.

I think it's missed sometimes, but I feel one our main styles of play-overlapping wing-backs and low crosses into the box-is set up to play to his strengths. For me his skill set influences our entire play, so the Peschi suggestion is more than a little premature.

Looked alright against Leeds. Are you Gary Madine?

Yeah, he can't play left wing back or centre half either, in fact without all those goals giving us three points he does fuck all.

Maybe....when he’s about 35....in the Prem.

I can see you don't post on here much and I am glad with posts like that, let's keep it that way please.

Sharp does have him limitations as does every player but what he does well is find the back of the net and he seems to be doing ok at doing that in this season just like he did do last season or have we forgot about all them goals he scored on helping us gain promotion into the championship as well as the goals he has scored in the championship.

He should have had a hat trick against Leeds , he nearly scored against qpr , leave the guy alone both away matches .

I don't see Billy Sharp as a Peschisolido-type. He could come on and change a game with something unpredictable, while Sharp is a pure goalscorer who is much more suited to starting than being an impact sub.

Totally agree.

The worst episode of Billy's career so far was his time at Leeds when he was often used as a substitute.

He absolutely needs to be on from the start for us. We have other players who can make an impact from the bench.

You’re right to ask the question, assuming you’re wondering if he’ll get a famous winner against Forest.

But to ask if someone who is captain of the side, carried the club through some of its darkest days, arguably saved us from possible relegation to League 2, banged in 30 goals to win the league and scored our first 4 goals, winning us 9 points and settling the nerves in a division in which we were meant to struggle but are now third in is aspiring to be a ‘cult’ hero is a strange question to ask. If he’d gone half of season without looking just half decent fair enough, but he scored on his last start.

He’s currently the best goal scorer in (at least) the 23rd best team in England. I reckon he has a few more years left yet :)

To the extent that we can be considered a "top Championship club", Billy Sharp is a first team striker, and captain, at a top Championship club, so I can see him being a first team striker at a top Championship club.

In a way, yes, but you can say that about all 3 of our current forward line (and duffy too).

They're the wrong side of 30 and will need replacing at some point but we'll be fine this season at least.

Looking forward to a younger striker coming in during the JTW to add some more pace. We have the cash... All about finding the right hungry youngster.

Actually, I'd say holding the ball up with his back to goal is one of the things he has got much better at. He does it a lot these days, and more effectively than a lot of strikers his size.

Thats because defenders can't bloody move him beacuse he has the mass of a neutron star, they have to try and navigate round him :tumbleweed:, didn't ya know "he's just a fat lad from Sheffield", one that seems quite adroit at sticking the ball in the back of the old onion bag...:)

Daft thread.

I've always said that Billy is the Kevin Phillips of his generation. No particular outstanding skills or attributes but my God is he good at scoring goals.

Like Kevin, I fully expect him to continue playing past 35.

Agree, except I think his hold up play and positioning is exceptional. Being in the right place at the right time is not luck, it's very clever forward play & something Billy has always had in his locker - his goal against Leeds being a prime example.

If Billy can be anything like a Kevin Phillips (what a good striker he was by the way), then we'll have a VERY good option for years to come.

I'll never get the Billy bashing. He is one of my favourite Blades ever. I love Billy Sharp. He captained and helped haul us out of our lowest point in years in some damn style and we should be bloody thankful to have him. If he was anywhere else we'd all be crying out for a player like him.

I questioned whether Billy Sharp represented good value (given his wages) for last season in the 3rd division...............

He was, and some!

I questioned whether he could cut it at this level.....................

He is, he started to prove me wrong on the very first day of the season!

I would also say that he is playing the best football of his career now. He's working harder than ever and the 3-5-2 formation seems to suit him. Good strikers have always missed chances but good strikers get themselves in positions to have chances. Give Billy 3 chances in a game and it's guaranteed he'll score 1. And occasionally maybe 2 or 3!!

And with Fleck and Duffy behind him, he'll get those chances. Keep proving me wrong Billy, lad:)

There are so many aspects to Billy Sharps game where is distinctly average, he isn't pacey, isn't commanding in the air, his first touch isn't great, and his link up play isn't the best either. In a game when he doesn't score, he doesn't stand out at all.

However what Billy Sharp is absolutely outstanding at is finding that little pocket of space in the box and finishing. It is a knack that all genuine poachers have, and is the reason that he has scored as many goals as he has, and at 32 years of age he has honed that skill down to a tee. Other fans hate him as he is the player who always scores against them, but he does that to most teams. In terms of his playing style, the nearest thing to him is a Gary Lineker or Kevin Phillips. He is a classic poacher and out and out goal scorer and I can see him going on for another 2 or 3 years at least, as his game is built on physical attributes or pace.
