Just realised that Duffy's contract expires at the end of the season.

Duffy is working incredibly hard at the moment and seems to be constantly pulling out MOM performances

My worry at the moment is that if he gets offered a new contract (maybe only a 1 year extension due to his age) then he might take his foot off the gas a bit because he's secured a new contract.

I'm currently seeing it as how it was with EEL - smashed it, got offered a new contract at Wolves - started playing pretty crap

My comment about age might not matter as Clarke, Billy and Clayton were all seemingly too old for the championship yet wilder can get a pint out of a half pint with them

honestly dont buy into EEL having a bad end to the season... think others around him just got better and he just wasnt quite (only just) good enough for first team persnaly wouldve still had him this year as back up.
relating to duffy i seem to remember him having quite big peaks and troughs of form last year so only time will tell hopefully he keeps this up all year ! :) utb

So basically you got to the end of the thread and realised there was nothing to worry about? :)
my worry with giving a contract extension would be that in a years time he may not be able to perform as well as he would be 33 ;)

but the worry is that if he's given an extension today - will he still work as hard as he has been doing on friday?

I wouldn't necessarily say that EEL was 'pretty crap' after getting his (deserved) new contract, but I get your point.

Can't see it happening personally. With Wilder at the helm, we know that every single player will give 101% in every match, hence why we've done so well over the last season & a bit.

The way Duffy has played since he came to the lane deserves an extension of his contract IMO. Consistently one of our best performers, someone who makes things happen & THAT goal. He should get an extension based on his performance at the sty alone!

UTB

I'm sure the bounce killer will been told by CW that there is a contract at the end of the season if he continues to perform.

A one year extension would be easier to negotiate than the 3-4 year ones.

Get the longer term ones sorted first which they seem to be doing.

Every single player we have at the moment would run through a brick wall for Sheffield United if we asked them to. This isn’t yesteryear. The overpaid arseholes of years gone by are no longer with us. Duffy will get his new contract and plough on. He’s the bounce killer.

Duffys a genuine lad, very humble and has bought into the Wilder culture.

He’ll be reight whatever we do
Besides the Bounce Killer has earnt the right to do whatever he wants and it gets my blessing.

I wouldn't worry myself one bit about any one of our players taking their foot off the gas, whether young or old, established or up and coming. We have a squad of hungry players who all seemingly love playing for us. If they didn't they wouldn't be here.

Duffy will probably be delighted at the prospect of more time playing for a manager who recognised his talent and has given him a chance to perform at a high level, where others in the past haven't.

Coutts signed a new contract in the summer and has got even better this season.

Duffy will sign a new contract soon and it won't affect him one bit.
good point

Chris, Billy and the rest of the squad wouldn't stand for a player who stopped pulling their weight. And even if he did, which he definitely wouldn't, Brooks would be there to step in to his place, so nothing to worry about on that front.

For me his age will only make him want to perform better, if he continues putting in top class performances and we do the amazing and get promoted, it may be his last chance to play in the prem.

Just wondering whether there is one of those 12 month contract extensions that can be activated by the club? We seem to have done it with a few players in recent seasons.

Duffy will be class regardless. But no doubt people will reference if he signs a new contract and is average for a game.

EEL had one really bad game (v Walsall?) and was hammerd for it (remember telling a bloke on the south stand to ‘stop it’ after everytime he touched the ball he shouted ‘No!’). Was a typical over reaction to someone having an off day that people automatically decided was due to him signing a new contract.

I know I’ve drank the kool aid... but just don’t think we have players here anymore that play when they feel like it.

I think the big difference is that Duffy would be signing a new contract with us, not Wolves.

I wouldn't say EEL played crap, but after his good start Wright got back in the side and we never lost a game with him in.

And I think speculating about the psychology of contract incentives upon a player like Duffy for whom we know essentially no real personal details is mindless.

Said this halfway through last season. And I'll say it again. I have literally no idea how he hasn't ever played higher. Absolute class act. Total professional. And an excellent role model for the youth players to be around. No worries from me on the contract situation.

"Youre not bouncing any more"...............................

Offer him a new contract, im sure he will play the same as he is a great lad.

He doesn't look like someone playing for a new contract. He's playing like someone who is the most naturally creative player we have and one of the most talented, because he is.

Also, Wilder has built a squad and a mentality where the players know if they're not putting it in, it's bench time.

He's playing like this because he's good and because he's motivated by achievement and the Blades environment. A new contract will just be something that follows.

Genuinely don't see any problems with Duffy, except for the fact that I wish he were a bit younger so we could have him for longer.

But really, we know the type of guy he is and the way Wilder & co manage. Absolutely no chance he'll take his foot off the pedal. The only real danger is of age catching up eventually, but before that happens he'll give anything and everything (he already is).

In fact, in a way it's almost an advantage he is a senior player and doesn't last 90 minutes every week. This means he expects to come off, so can happily run the other team ragged for 60+ minutes or so before coming off, whereupon the poor opposition defenders now have to face Brooks or Billy.

The other alternative being we do it the other way around and bench him at the start before unleashing him for the last half hour, and we all know what happens when we do that.. :)

He doesn't strike me as the kind of player who'd take his foot off the gas. The lads just put himself deeply into United folklore, when he utterly humiliated thousands of bouncing wankers. I'm sure he'd want to create a few more memories with our great club before he packed it in so can't imagine he'd stop working so hard.

Lots of good stuff on here. Let’s look at it another way.
Never mind if he takes his foot off the gas. What if that extra 12 months (with an option to extend?) takes the pressure off sufficiently so that he gets even better! Imagine that - Duffy (who’s super anyway) but like Super-Duper-Duffy !!!!
Said for ages the side is better balanced with Duffy in it. And he stopped the bouncing by screwing van Aken into the swillsboro turf then tapping home.....
It’ll happen when the time is right.
