Coutts

Carter-Vickers was excellent too. He entirely justified his selection, ahead of fans’ favourite Jake Wright.

The lad is strong as on ox, quick and incredibly self-assured for a youngster. Gerrimin.
I thought it was a real shame for CCV that we had to reshuffle after Freeman’s injury because he was outstanding in the middle of the back three up to that point.

McCarthy did his homework and realised how many times we over load the left hand side with our fast triangular passing game so he tried to match us up in terms of numbers.
However when this happens it leaves the defence short on numbers on the right where there is a lot of space.
Coutts is great in dropping just behind the over loaded area and quickly switching play with the huge diagonal ball wide out to the right

I thought we missed him a lot today
Lundstram is still learning our game.

The best two positive (as oppoosed to Crab Wilkins), ( nothing to do with Crab Industries I hasten to add), midfielders I have seen so far this season, who don`t give the ball away , are Paul Coutts and Andres Inniesta.,

We did miss him, our midfield was lacking abit today without Coutts, even if its just his simple passing and movement, but we managed to get a goal and keep a clean sheet and thats all that really matters.
It was a result but sorry it wasn't a great performance.

Well the suspension is served, hes had a weeks extra rest, we won without him, and he will be raring to go for next season. Lundy also got abother game under his belt which will help ease him in to the squad and what's expected of hI'm in the future. All positives.

Only slight concern is just how quickly Coutts collected the 5 yellows this season. Hes not exactly a dirty player. It seems that a few Utd players (Clarkes another one) get carded for looking in the wrong direction whereas I've seen other games on the box where other non sufc players seem to get away with minor abh without being carded. It's that lack of consistency thing again which I find annoying.

.

Yes, they had been expecting O'Connell and Stevens to attack on the left all the time then Fleck surprised them when he exploited this area before the cross for the goal

Where's Bergen Blade ?
I'm sure he'll explain it better than both of us SB :)

I think you both made good points to be honest!

We really showed our fluency and movement well for the goal which started with a throw in. Duffy was on the ball, but it went back to Stevens who took the throw in. Ipswich looked to be in control, but then Fleck skipped past a player, found Clarke out on the touch line, but continued his run down the left, where he got the ball back. The ball had been on the left hand side for a long time and this naturally pulls defenders towards the ball. That meant Basham, coming in from the right, was the only player able to time his jump and attack the ball.

* Note the Ipswich defenders being pulled out of position - towards the ball - and Fleck rightly goes for a deep cross.

Real credit to Fleck on this occasion, a phenomenal assist. He created the chance to go forward with his clever dribble, then continued sprinting into the space behind their right wing back, and picked the right area for his cross, which was also accurate and swung in with decent pace.

When Clough signed Basham I think he hoped he'd score goals like these. His finishing and heading technique has let him down at times, but it was perfect on this occasion.

tbf Clarke didn't deserve to get carded yesterday, he clearly won the ball on that tackle

I thought we missed him in the 2nd half to be honest. After we went 1-0 up we were a bit rushed and I think he would have slowed the game down.

A couple from memory have been ‘professional fouls’ when he’s been overrun in midfield and hauled the player down as a lack of pace meant he’d never catch him

Could someone enlighten me as to where Coutts was? Was it suspension? Haven't heard it mentioned in any interviews. But nearly bawled my eyes out when I saw the Scottish Pirlo was missing. Lundstram came in and was excellent however!

2 or 3 of his cards have been for bringing a player down when they are looking to spring a counter attack, "taking one for the team" so to speak.

Where we missed him most was in the spells where Ipswich had a bit of the ball. For periods it all got a bit scrappy and we needed that calming influence he brings. Puts his foot on it, slows it down a bit and gets us back into forward gear.

That said, i thought Lundstrum played very well and was no small part in us doing well enough to win comfortably without our best player - that's something to be very happy about.

I've noticed this as a trait for our midfield in general. We set out to attack in such numbers that there's times where we look like getting caught out on the break and one of our midfielders has to take the booking to stop these counter attacking situations from developing.

I'm OK with it as it's part of what allows us to play with such attacking intent but as the season progresses it could become an issue. We could reach a stage where both Coutts & Fleck are hovering around the 15 booking mark and are looking at 3 match bans as we enter the most crucial stretch of the season.

I fully expect the Ryan Leonard saga to resume in January so we've got an extra bit of cover there if the bookings keep piling up as they are. Either that or Ben Whiteman gets a shot in the squad if he can keep impressing for Donny.

Fair enough. If he racked them up mainly due to that reason (my memory isn't what it used to be) then I can live with that. The only time I remember him getting a booking this season though was when he was booked for sod all (cant remember the game though). I will on this occasion accept my bias and that he probably has been deserving of the bookings. Still referees....grrrr their incompetence gets my goat.

Totally bias but thought we missed him from minute one.

When we have a lot of the ball he's the man who orchestrated proceedings. Has others have pointed out, it got a bit frenetic at times.

Thought Lundstram was good defensively but limited with his ball playing. Bit like replacing Pirlo with Jordan Henderson.

However, that's the kind of thing which might have tripped us up, and the fact it didn't is testimony to us being the real deal!

could very easily have a separate thread on the incompetence of referees but one thing that annoys me every single game is when players pick the ball up and throw it away. If they had kicked it the same distance they'd get booked, but because they've thrown it referees let it go unpunished! Infuriates me!

Thought we missed Coutts Saturday. Its a game of opinions, but IMO Lundstram did ok, but certainly not excellent as has been described. Coutts is always avaialble and constantly looks for the ball off the back 3. Lundstram had other elements to his game but wasnt anywhere near as influential as Coutts. It was noticable that the back 3 (CCV inpactcular) were asked to bring the ball out more which put more pressure on the back 3 as a whole positionally.

What was clear though is that Lundstram can cover for Coutts and he will only get better...meaning more competition for places.

UTB

Coutts....could sit in either of the two sides on display tonight and do a very good job. Seen both Leicester and West Brom give the ball away several times with loose passes.
