Would any of you change the current team to accommodate Sharp ( when he returns to fitness) because when i look at the team sheet I can't think of any midfielders or forwards who can be replaced. the only formation I can think of is

Blackman
BAsham carter-vickers wright
bladock stevens
coutts fleck

brooks
sharp clarke

Can't drop brooks tell me what you think and your suggested lineups.

You must be really bored.
Oh and remember Coutts is banned for Ipswich so you could answer your own question, although, more likely Lundstrum or Carruthers.

I wonder how Duffy and Brooks would do behind an in form Clarke?
It's almost impossible but going forward I think that would be fruitful (ah, never used that word before. It's a bit camp but it does the job)

for me its Clarke and Brooks as pre Forest..... what a combo - im afraid Billys days as automatic starter are gone

When CCV hit the post vs Forest, Clarke was static and watched it bounce back and cleared. Sharp would have followed the ball and put it in. Sharp would have got us a point, that's the difference between him and the alternatives. There's no debate to be had.

Agreed, Clarke doesn't react often enough to those sort of situations. Billy is a goal poacher and is usually there for the rebound or low ball across the box.

I think the matches against Forest and Norwich are ones where we really missed Billy.

Stop the clock!! We have a winner!

5 days into the international break and we have the first anti-Billy discussion...

At least it's getting longer...

wait... where is the Don ?

Pick anyone, bollocks to Billy, anyone can score goals, stick a goalkeeper up front for all it's worth.

Is it “anti-Billy” to appreciate his qualities but nevertheless suggest the possibility of him not being an automatic selection?

The ones, conveniently, that we lost. Can I respond by saying that we only beat the Pigs and Wolves in two outstanding performances because he didn’t play? Sauce for the goose etc...

Got to be a run for Clarke and Brooks, the football we played against Wednesday and Wolves with those two was the best we've seen this season, IMO. If you drop either we lose that as Sharp can't do what Brooks does, nor is he as powerful, or has the ability to bully defenders like Clarke does.

A spell on the bench for him I suspect, can only be a good thing having a goal scorer as good as him on the bench.

There were perfect chances in the Norwich game where Sharp would have scored. Maybe no so much the Forest game as that was an end to end match especially after we lost Baldock to injury.

Anyway I am surprised you are not suggesting the great James Hanson should get a match if he is back to fitness.

Once Brooks learns to deliver the final pass in a timely manner on a consistent basis, whoever we play up front will score a hat full. Billy will still score more though when it gets chaotic in the box and the ball is pinging around.

Problem is that it isn't often we create goal mouth scrambles where the ball pings around the box, our style is much more controlled than that which makes the need for a poacher smaller.

Sharp will get back in the starting 11 in time as injuries and suspensions crop up, but for now I think Brooks and Clarke will be the first choice.

For most on her, 'No, of course not'.

For one poster who may or may not be currently wiping his arse with a McNulty/Che Adams half and half scarf, I'm afraid the answer is 'Yes'.

FWIW I voted for Billy to replace Brooks. DB can't start every game and may benefit from coming off the bench after an hour again. Billy works harder and puts in more work up front (including the dark arts), so Billy and Leon for me.

It will depend on how Ipswich set up. If they play with a defence pushed up the pitch I think it will be Brooks and Clarke.

If the defence plays deep like Forest did I think Sharp will start with Clarke

Baldock is out injured and Coutts suspended. so it does give scope for Brooks to drop into the midfield 3 with Fleck and Lundstrom

Billy will be our leading scorer again if he stays fit, he’s the only player that I expect to score as opposed hoping he will score, and he should return if fit. I’m amazed how some write him off so easily (again) when we were wetting ourselves at the prospect of him getting injured before the Sunderland game and Donaldson’s brace. A couple of good results without him changes nothing, he’s our best striker and he’d started the season very well before injury.

If we want to keep the core of the team together against Ipswich, how about exploring Brook’s talent further and play him in Coutts’s position with Clarke and Sharp upfront, where let’s not forget they played well together at the end of last season? Coutts’s main role is keeping the midfield ticking over and instigating our attacks, he’s not particularly good defensively (hence the bookings). It wouldn’t surprise me if Chris did try him in Coutts’s role, even though I agree Samir is the probably the obvious choice.

So you would play Baldock who is injured and drop O'Connell ?

OK

You assume, wrongly, that Sharp buries every chance he gets. You can’t be suggesting that every time we lose when Sharp doesn’t play it is because Sharp doesn’t play? That’s a classic non-sequitur.

What do you say about two of our finest performances against the Pigs and Wolves?

We have excellent options in Leon, Billy and The Don (Brooks isn’t a striker) together with, hopefully Lavery and Ched when fit. Let them fight it out. Surely that can only be good? Hanson did a good, if limited, job for us. He’s clearly finished now.

For me, it’s about Sheffield United not Billy Sharp. Blade, not Bladey, as it says on the tin.
