Not a character from Alan Partridge or Phoenix nights, but a slight in figure winger for Sporting Lisbon.

During Sunday's match versus Porto he did a 'Brooksy', that sublime turn back touch through the defenders legs and then run round with speed.

I hadn't really reflected after the pigs game, but when I saw it on Sunday I said to our lass automatically "bleeding ell love that winger's just done a Brooksy".

That piece of skill will now forever in our house be known as a Brooksy, just like a Cruyff turn or that scorpion kick by that South American keeper with the mullet hair cut.

I bet right now there are playgrounds full of right minded junior blades practicing the move, telling the pig fans in their class "right stand there you can be the pig defence and I'm Brooksy"

There is of course no truth in the rumour that a balding overweight 49 year old man living in the South of England has been practicing his own 'Brooksy' with a garden chair after one too many in The Unicorn. Any suggestions are false despite what our lass says....

I once did a 'Brooksy' myself in a 5 a side game at Goals a few years ago and went on to smash the ball in the net which proved to be the winning goal. It was instinctive at the time, the opposing player was mortified and I've never repeated it!

With the lightweight ball and desso pitches plus the training kids get from an early age, there are loads of young players who can do stuff like that. Think about it, when I was born the Cryuff turn hadn't been invented. These days every academy kid can do one aged about eight, no trouble at all.
Similarly, the thing they do when they do a 360 with the ball. I was amazed when I first saw some top player doing that but it's quite common now. Makes you wonder what the likes of Hagan and TC would be doing if they were starting now.

I've never seen anyone master the Currie Shuffle yet.

True.
I remember watching a documentary with my son (probably 13 at the time) about Cryuff and there was a clip of Cryuff's famous turn. I said something like "Watch this, it's a classic". His reaction was along the lines of "Oh my days. That is sooo lame. Anyone can do that.".

I still can't do that thing where you step one foot over the ball and then bring your feet together as you run over it and flick the ball into the air. That thing.

You still managed to turn the ball past Kolo Toure well enough against Arsenal though.

Know what you mean! Many years ago when I played 'junior' football most teams had 3 or 4 players who were skillful enough to beat an opponent and usually fast with it.
The other 6 or 7 were stoppers and/or workhorses who tended to pass to the skillful ones.

Move forward 25 years to now and ALL players are skillful, fast and play football like the pros

Gits!

Bloody ell, you are christian Nade aren't you.

Our amateur team manager once decided at training to get us to line up and take it in turns to do that move that Basham did against Southampton in the cup where you put one foot on the ball drag it with the other and do a 360 or summat.
Needless to say, as a 6' 2",15 stone central defender who could barely even pass the ball in a straight line, it didn't end too well for me :(

In a friendly I remember dragging the ball back as one of our better players slid in to tackle me (think he'd played for his city as a lad) and then blasting it goalward. Not only did he miss the tackle but he stopped and slid back in that fraction of a second and blocked my shot! It was one of those days when you realise the skill that professionals must have.

Someone once did it to me late 70s on a Sunday morning, 10 minutes later I showed him the error of his ways quickly followed by a early bath :( the referees where reight mardy back then couldn't see the funny side of a friendly punch:D

The rainbow flick?

I wonder what the record is for most nutmegs in a season? Brooks gets at least one a game and always seems to be looking for it, should we notify Guinness World Records so they can get his certificate ready?

I told you all TWICE before he made a cunt out of Hunt that he reminded me of the young Cruyff.

The general reaction to this implied that I may need to see a medical practitioner and enquire about a change of medication.

Well, as Bob Monkhouse said about the reaction to him telling people he was going to become a comedian - " They're not laughing now "

Hagan was doing all those tricks - and more - with the old leather footballs when I used to watch him in the 1950s (but not the Cryuff turn - Hagan had his own specialities).
