If he doesn't sign a new contract then January's our last chance to get a suitable fee for him.
As soon as players are into their last year, fees reduce quite significantly.
He wouldn't be laughing if Brooks got a career changing injury between now and his contract expiring. He'd be wishing he took the 15k.
It would be best for all parties if he signed a good contract now, securing his future as soon as possible, ensuring he's earning good money between now and when he leaves.
Totally agree.
You can be sure that what SU and Wilder will be telling him.
Fortunately for us, Brooks seems really grounded and I would imagine he’s really enjoying it at SU.
Also Wilder is doing a great job at improving Brooks and developing his career and we have a realistic chance of promotion.
If I was Brooks I’d sign a new contract with United but have some get out clauses just in case he becomes bigger than the club.
For me it should always be about progression and developement over money.
The point everyone is missing when discussing Brooks' future, is United's aspirations for the premiership this season. The only way we can keep hold of Brooks (for a two or three seasons more that is) is if we are playing there ourselves. If we don't go up this season then our chances of keeping him are zero, it would be fallacious to think otherwise.
Therefore the club's strategy should be to improve the rest of the team in January for a major push, not just looking at Brooks in isolation and trying to fob him off with an extra 10 grand per week. This may not sit down too well with the "consolidationers" and may well see the end of the careers of a few favourites at the Lane, but the club have to show the initiative and some intent over this matter.
If we don't, then we are in for yet another round of false promise, false hope and ultimately disappointment.
Excellent point.
If we’re in the top 5 at Christmas then it’s the exact scenario set up for the Prince to splash the cash.
He always said he wouldn’t needless splash the cash BUT considerable finances would be available if the situation urgently needed it,
Let’s be honest turning down a £25 million bid in January is nothing compared to the millions available if we get promoted.
We’ve tended to be a financially sensible club (which is fine) but sometimes a club needs to gamble and strike when the perfect opportunity arises.
The way I see it United cannot lose with this scenario. If we gamble and splash the cash then we will get a multiple return on the investment if we went up. If we didn't, then we sell Brooks to re-balance the books. At least we would have tried and I wouldn't be upset if it didn't quite work out. As I said, it's a no-lose situation.
or Neymar. Why would his value increase by playing for England hasn’t harmed Bale.
umm.. not been paying attention recently??Playing for England he'd probably be playing in the later stages of major tournaments against the worlds top players.
Not likely with Wales. If he did that and held his own, his value would without a doubt be higher.
Would we accept him signing a long term contract if it meant inserting a £15m release clause? Or maybe £12m with a 25% sell on clause?
I would. Even though with his inevitable development and further fee inflation he'll be worth more than that in no time.
Like we'd hold out for more than £5 million. No chance.
They'll crumble at £2.5M
