...when 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' starts up, and all the part time pigs start clapping along joyously led by that fat old man with his shirt off...does anyone else feel an incredible feeling of gratitude from that they were born on the right side of the tracks?

For me that is my one of the most evocative memories associated with a away leg of the derby.
 



Chanting to a tune which, in modern times, is widely associated amongst football fans of all clubs, with Wolverhampton Wanderers, and which countless other clubs have used at various other times going back to the 60's. They really are a bunch of embarrassing 'nowters'.

Absolutely spot on, Rodley. Its cringeworthy.

When the start "Singing the Blues" and to a man we sing "Swinging a Pig".
 
I fucking despise that "chant/song" or whatever the deluded ones call it. In the past I've even heard them compare it to GCB. Truly delusional and stupid. Only reason they've given us such a pathetic allocation is they're scared of 5000 blades drowning out their pathetic clapping and bouncing with a deafening chorus of GCB at kickoff.
 
Do they still come out to "Waterfront" ? I was never really a Simple Minds fan, not even of their still fashionable early stuff. First couple of minutes of "Waterfront", though, is about as good as it gets as one to walk out to
 
It's a fucking embarrassing chant and to even consider comparing it to GCB is a complete joke. It'll really go through me to hear them all singing it on Sunday.

They do have an identity mate. Its just different to ours, and personally I much prefer ours to theirs. There's is one of a big brother attitude, maybe it stems from them being the older club I don't know. They feel they're superior and we're in their shadow. Ask any genuine pig and that's what they think. Arrogance is not something they're even aware of. They consider themselves one of the biggest clubs in the country and have a proud history.

They totally dismiss us as second fiddle and our history even though if you look through the history of the two clubs neither club has dominated over the other for long. Attendance wise, both clubs have a very similar average attendance fan base. The main difference is for a big game such as at Wembley they attract a larger fan base from their "glory" fan base who only attend such games, whereas, in my view, United have a higher percentage of fans who call themselves Blades that actually attend the games regularly. The Wembley games for them just leads even more to the delusion that they genuinely belong as one of the elite clubs yet the next game they're back to the 22-27000 fans just like we get, as proved by the attendance records this season.

Neither club has ever been consistently at the top like a Man U etc. Essentially both clubs are big clubs but one sees themselves as superior to their actual status.

I prefer it when we just sing SHEFF UNITED to their Sheffield Wednesday! We'll outsing them on Sunday, there is no doubt about that!
 
At the risk of getting put up against a wall and being shot, I do remember said hi ho being sung at the lane for a short while in early 80's, didn't last long though...
 
A club so massive at S6 they still sing about a division 3 result nearly 40 years ago.
A club so massive they have a stand held together by a tarpaulin
A team claiming a better history but hasn't finished above United in the championship since 1959
A team so massive they only offer 6 per cent of their ground to local opposition in a show of petulance

Remember getting very drunk at a wake once in the Prince of Wales Feathers and putting that on the karaoke and singing Hi Ho Sheff United to it with my Blade nephew. Mainly Blades but quite a few Owls in there, but they took it quite well tbf :D

I think they are jealous of our ground, our history, our songs, our badge and now our manager.
They clamber on about attendances because let's be fair... it's all they have.

But that proves my point. It really doesn't run that deep with them.
They base everything on the warped idea that they are a major force in football. There's no culture that runs through the fan base that is independent of that idea.

United have always been unfashionable, always been the outsider. That has a galvanising effect on the support. There's an intensity and a fervour amongst Unitedites that they simply cannot match. For most of us, the club is who we are, not merely something we associate ourselves with.
 
It must be incredibly embarrassing being a non-descript club without even your own unique anthem recognised throughout the football world as one of the best there is, easily up there in the top five.

Then again I suppose it's not that bad for them all things taken into consideration.

They play in a city whose majority support their rivals, instead relying for support from towns on the outskirts.

They play in probably the most hideous amaturish strips home and away anybody has ever seen. Fortunately for them their shambles of a club have fooked things up so badly they're not available to buy even if they wanted to.

They get ripped off on matchday tickets but because they are so gullible and desperate for ANYONE to get them back to the top flight after SEVENTEEN years they go along with it while slagging of the less fortunate of their own fans and of course having the nerve to try and have a dig at United for looking after our own.

They have a poor excuse of an academy which produces nothing, probably because the poor kids are shitting themselves on a windy day that the blow up tent is going to take off with them in it.

They play in a stadium they has not been improved in any way for two or three decades, unless you count the taupilin covering up the West Stand. To say it's held up by the rust is an under statement and I'm not just talking about that one horrifically historic stand.

Then of course there's their fellow fans. God dealt them a severe blow to inflict on just one set of followers such levels of arrogance, delusion and general fvckwittery as he did when he gave them them the gift of being a pig fan. He really must have been having a bad day.

So I suppose having an anthem used by half the football league ain't too bad after all. It's all a matter of perspective.

Birthdays, weddings, parties, you name it, the DJ can't help but play it at the end of the night no matter what the situation

My grandad used to sing it with me. Had no idea the pigs considered it their song till yonks later.

GCB, on the other hand, is completely ours. Only Grimsby sing it and not as often as we do (and contrary to the belief of some of their fans, we sang it first).

Yep, its pathetic. Can't even have their own, unique "anthem". Even their stupid piggy band was an idea stolen from the Dutch National team band post Euro '96. The same tournament that funded their ground improvements....they couldn't even fund their own ground improvements.

I had the misfortune to attend their friendly with Rangers this August. The only thing more pathetic than the Wolves song Hi Ho Silver Lining, was that they played Rangers anthem just before the second half to let Rangers fan sing along to it, they were trying so hard to be "football fwiends" with another of the most pathetic and disgusting clubs in British football.
