The belief that after a couple of seasons teams are a 'comfortable' Premiership team is exactly the reason some clubs are in real difficulties now.
Fans and directors start to believe it will never end so buy players they can't really afford on contracts they can't sustain without the Sky TV money.

Fans push for more expensive players in order to compete for Europe, not being satisfied with the fact that they are really a middle size club realistically above their weight already.
They then get relegated and can't afford to pay wages or sell players for what they purchased them for.
Wonder what Aston Villa's or Sunderland's wage bill is and how much they'd get for any of their big stars? As soon as the parachute payments run out they will be in real trouble.
As the club then slides through the divisions the fans then complain about how unfair it is they have transfer embargoes placed on them or worse.

This is my real gripe about the Premiership, that the hype causes unrealistic expectations and the money allows smallish clubs to believe they can sustain buying players that cost 30 million+ on 100k a week contracts. It's madness.
It's reported that some of the foreign owners of such clubs are now losing interest because no matter how much they spend they can't compete with Man U, City and Chelsea and are having to spend increasing millions each year just to stand still.

I actually really hope that one day Sky don't bid for rights, or do at a much reduced rate, but I suspect there were always be another company willing to step up.
I would like to think, that with our current setup, we wouldn't try to compete with the likes of Man u or Chelsea.
We are a very down to earth club & hopefully that would continue, if the ownership changes then maybe, but not at the moment.
Realistically our ambition is the premier & survival once there.

Sorry, even if you gave me all the Premier League titles in the world, I could never ever support a merger.
I would support the merger. You take the white from a blue and white striped shirt, you add to it the red stripes on a Blades shirt.
You take the Sheffield from Sheffield Wednesday, adding United from Sheffield United.
You then call the red and white stripes, Sheffield United, a newly merged team. ☺ ♥

There would be NOTHING 'super' about it.

End of.

Depends if we finally won something
people like the owners of meadowhall once said to choode one would have been favouritism , if there was only one wed have a string of local investors
who could get on board that at the moment cant do both

Basset has no affinity to Utd ,we were one of his many employers as were Forest and Dingles. He has a place for Wimbledon but his team are Chelsea. How do I know because I had a private dinner with him with 7 other guys and asked him the question ,I was the only Blade present. He went down in my estimation that day ,very disappointing.
That is really disappointing.
I recall you mentioning that before.

I bet he still has more of an affinity for us than Neil "Superblade" Warnock all the same.
I always like to hear db talk and his views are very much bang on.i remember him commentating on a game of yours as I think he had a touchline ban. Brian Deane got tackled and he said he went down like a giant redwood.made me chuckle did Bassett and a good bloke.

But you have always been anti-McCabe, correct me if I am wrong.

McCabe is the biggest barrier to a merger, not foreign owners.

Bassett was my hero as a kid. His words have let him down since but I'll never forget growing up watching his teams.

Similar to Warnock, I'm eternally grateful for everything he achieved but he's a heavily flawed character.

Wilder has the potential to surpass both. Proper football. Totally honesty and genuinely understands United. His ambition may well exceed ours and bring his time here to a premature end, but such is life.

Why is Bassett a "heavily flawed character"?

Surely you're not suggesting that you can't have a new owner without the club disappearing to a merger.

This is an interesting thread because some characters on here are anti-merger and yet they are anti-McCabe who is the biggest single reason a merger has not been developed.

When it's a Thai owner and a Saudi owner just watch one do a deal, the other walk away with loads of cash and then we all have to sort ourselves out as fans.

Fans' interests? Don't make me laugh.

Who's for signing a petition imploring McCabe not to sell his 50% shareholding?

Let's be hearing from all those who were so vociferous before Wilder joined us. This angle was offered for debate at the time but trashed.

A merger is always more likely when the clubs are close in the league positions.

McCabe out!!!??? Perhaps not.:):););)

Not at all, but.......think it through.

It won't be a Blade and it will be a businessman. It will not likely be somebody who knows the first thing about football or S2.

I'd suggest the biggest single reason it hasn't happened is that it's a ridiculous idea that is so stupid even the richest and stupidest of football owners, or potential owners, wouldn't contemplate it.

I was just about to make this point. Any businessman with more than one brain cell wouldn't even think about it, Blade or not. It would royally piss off 95% of their targeted fanbase, on both sides. And yeah, you probably don't want to do that if you are then going to expect them to pay money in to the club every week.

so on one side theres the argument the fans dont want to spoil the rivalry between the 2 clubs
a rivalry so intense neither team have had any success since laurel and hardy were popular
last league title 1929 for sheffield
last facup win 1935

both teams have wallowed in div 3 for a decade
we graced div 4 for a season

our best in my lifetimes been a 6th finish and a semi final
so we settle for mediocrity and some pig banter

we have had promises of better but it has never been delivered, on both sides of the city
2 mediocre team forever ,,,, so be it

Don't you believe it.

Taking my blue and white specs off.both clubs should be in the premier league and not just surviving but progressing. I'm sure the teams would rather have both Sheffield teams in the league than the likes of Bournemouth etc.and I mean no disrespect to them at all.
