De Girolamo is playing with Reed at ChesterfieldGiralamo, Slew, Ironside.![]()
True, good point. But they didn't know that at the startI can only assume CW and the academy staff felt he'd benefit from a season being coached properly and developing in the U23s. Apparently he did very well so I'd guess it's been good for his confidence. He's probably also learnt a lot being around a promotion winning squad.
It may have done him more good in the long term.
Reed is only 20. Far too young to be writing him off. Lowton didn't play regularly in our first team till he was 21 years old and now has over 100 premier league appearances to his name.
[
The reality of that situation is that the arrival of Wilder has basically shut the door on first team match day experience for the club's own up and coming lads. There is real value in first team bench time but there has been precious little of that. Between them Whiteman, Brooks and Reed had just over a handful of games on the bench and I think had just a few minutes playing time between them at most last season.
Contrast that with Adkins and even more so Clough and you will see a different, more results driven approach now. Neither approach is right or wrong but from the perspective of young lads hoping to make their way in the game it is obvious last season was a nightmare compared with previous seasons.
Promotion was the prime target for Wilder and he thinks experience gets promotion. Nothing wrong with that if you are prepared to 'lose' the goodwill of young players and send a message to every young player in the club that there is no 'Pathway'. Does it do the club a disservice over the medium term, well United were at the stage when short term was the be all and end all.
Philip Reed above is probably Reed's dad or uncle. The comment about team orders at Hillsborough last night has a certain ring of truth about it. So does the comment about ' ever pulling on a red and white shirt again' and that is a great pity and over-emotional to be fair, nor does it have a 'ring of being Reed's dad about it', hope not anyway, it's counter-productive.
Summer 2016 Wilder made umpteen decisions about players in the squad. Unfortunately for Whiteman and Reed he decided nothing about them personally so they both marked time last season. That was a mistake and affected the lads' development. Both Reed and Whiteman excelled for the U-23's but so what? They were past that stage long ago, they needed first team playing time on loan.
The first time I saw Reed play I saw quality. In his first team games at the age of 17, I continued to see quality interspersed with inconsistency. When a player plays through balls like Reed did at QPR away for McNulty's goal it's time to sit up and take notice. I went to the Newcastle friendly with a Geordie pal and after 20 minutes he said who's that little lad, he's quality? He has it in his locker and over the past year he has added aggression and concentration. Player of the Season for the U-23's which included Brooks for many games by the way. My cousin at Chesterfield says he is delighted with Reed to date and says he gets a foot in alright.
If Reed never pulls on a Blades shirt again it is us who will be victims of circumstance because the lad will make his way at least in the Championship and with luck higher. Good luck to him and I hope it is with us. How bold Clough was to play him at 16 years old. Perhaps Reed should go to join him at Burton.
Thankfully Wilder sated that there might be more opportunities for youngsters this season, maybe because we will be mid-table, but Whiteman and Reed are elsewhere anyawy.
I can certainly understand the frustration at not being allowed to be loaned out last season. It was blindingly obvious that Wilder was set on his preferred midfield, and quite right too. Reed was never likely to be involved, even less so when we brought two more midfielders in during the January window. I did think at the time it was bizarre he wasn't allowed to leave.
I'd like to ask, other than the Burton away game (where he wasn't even THAT bad), when has he had a bad game for us?
I certainly remember him having more good than bad games in a United shirt. Yes, many were mediocre, but this is at a time when putting in a mediocre performance for the Blades meant you were one of the better players. I remember him having great games at Bradford and Spurs, to name but a few.
Let's see how his loan spell goes and take it from there, but don't right him off, there is no upside in doing so.
Shut up about his height you lanky fucker, ffs.Seem to remember him having a couple of shockers on Tuesday night away games under funny little Nigel. Rochdale and Notts County spring to mind. Bad pitches, past his bedtime, he really struggled. But I agree when you look back at his debut, the Southampton game, the QPR game, Swindon at home (2-0 win Murphy scoring), Yeovil at home (2-0 win, he played a sublime through ball for either Murphy or McNulty, I forget which), he has had his fair share of good games. But it’s whether he will ever be a complete midfielder. His physical limitations means it’s hard to see him having the all round game required.
It’s a very bold statement to say he will make in the championship or higher. The lad definitely has some ability and I don’t like the stick he gets on here from some. But, he has shortcomings which are difficult to overcome. He is tiny and slow across the ground. It’s very difficult to have a good career with those 2 limitations. You have to be an exceptional footballer to overcome that. Personally, I think he’ll have a career around League 1 level for the most part. I would be delighted if I was wrong and he came back in January and made an impact on our team. I just don’t see it. Good player but with the disadvantaged physique, he has to be a lot more than good to excel at a high level.
Taller and quicker than Fleck who we all admire![]()
He isn't. Neither of those. Wishful thinking again Woody. More importantly he's nowhere near as good, even though you've almost work that wishing star out on him.
If there comes a time when Louis Reed is a regular, it won't be a very good or successful team.
Chesterfield, League Two, Louis Reed. A perfect fit. We move on to bigger and better things:

Club websites: Fleck 169cm. Reed 173cms.
Seriously Pinchy. How many times have you seen the lad play? And how long since you last saw him?
I honestly don't think you are up to speed on this one. He's obviously grown since you saw him or Fleck has shrunk, one of the two!! Do you know he's bulked up a fair bit and is now muscular.
My guess is that you last saw him play early season under Adkins.
Fleck is a stocky fucker, and easily quicker. Also has much more to his game defensively, a higher work rate and is better at football.
Of course he is a betterv player but he's also 26 and has played 260 league games. Nobody said otherwise, just that he was not as tall and not as quick, which he isn't on both counts.

Just so I'm sure...are one or two on here having veiled digs at Wilder for his treatment of lil Louis and the progression of our youth in general?
Agree 100%
He's the same age as Brooks.
He's a little lad who is as good as he's ever going to be.
Harrogate Town or thereabouts within three years.
I'd say Fleck is quicker.
Of course he is. He's also taller. I don't care what websites say. I have eyes. Reed has no change of pace whatsoever. Just the one gear - pedestrian.
Still, the Bladey Boybanders remain upbeat:
I wonder if the 'little lad' ever reads comments like that, or his Dad or his Mum.
Messi, Maradona, Sanchez (1.69m) Willie Carling, Joe Shaw, Cowans; name so many from the millions of small excellent players and wonder if they ever listened to such ignorant nonsense and gained energy and determination from it.
