How has he been treated?

Other than having to play for the u23s which is perfectly reasonable considering he hasn't shown to be good enough for a first team birth.

He's now on loan in League 2, arguably a step up in class. So, it's time to do what Whiteman has done and try to prove he has what it takes and force the managers hand into giving him a try.

So far, he's failed to do that.

You really haven't got a clue about what goes on behind the scenes. Perhaps you can tell me why he didn't go out on loan last year. Or why he didn't play for the U23s (U21s) the season before that? I don't think you will come anywhere close in your assumptions not even if you're one of the ITK brigade

You can't just say things like that with nothing to back it up.
Tell us WHY he's been poorly treated.

So when have you seen him playing in the Championship in order to make that assumption. Last night he was playing with League 2 players against a near full strength Championship play off side. If you had watched all night as I do you would have seen him never stop running pressing and chasing for the full 90 minutes as per the team instructions. Unfortunately some of the team weren't quite as energetic resulting in huge gaps between the pressing midfield and the back four
Oh and just for good measure, after the way he has been treated at the club the last 18 months I wouldn't want him wearing the Red and White shirt again!

Do we take it your his dad? Fair to say Louis is a very skillful lad - but if you and he are honest- he hasn't exactly ripped it up. Every team wants 'one of their own' to do well. The fan base were willing Louis to grab the opportunity and excel but he hasn't.

It's no good blaming this or that- he was given chances but sadly didn't show, even though the faithful were willing him on.

I really hope its lights the touch paper at Chesterfield and comes back and shows us that skill. Best thing we have seen his is kicky up skills at half time with the rest of the subs.

But good luck Louis.

What small margins there are.

That one shot 2 feet lower and Reedy would have been a hero, we would have had a final at Wembley and we would probably still have FLN.

For what it's worth - and as Philip said it's all about opinions - I think that, given a fair wind, Reedy will end up in the Prem in a role like Makelele had. He's just like Scholes, except he can time a tackle.

It was always unfortunate that Reed got played at 17 in one of the worst XI's we've ever had, seems to have tarred his reputation with our fans to the point people are doing the opposite of willing him to do well.

Not sure that's the case.

The typical Blade is a 'Bladey Boybander' and would love to see one of it's own achieve what most of us can only dream of.

He is a bit of a luxury player and in the FLN days, he probably had most of his qualities taken away from him to 'do one for the team'.

He's only young still, he has plenty of time to prove his doubters wrong. It's all up to him now.

I'm not sure many are genuinely thinking that but you're quite right; no one looked good under Adkins apart from Billy and a few good games here and there for the others like Bash and Coutts. Terrible environment for a young player to play in. Whiteman has looked like a real prospect at Mansfield and started well at Donny but looked no more than average under Adkins.
By all accounts Reed did well in the u23s last season and it's not too late for him. It's certainly too early to write him off.

Whilst I can't dispute how he's been treated under +ve Nige, surely Wilder is THE man to help with his progression.

Hope he impresses at Chezzy! UTB

The reality of that situation is that the arrival of Wilder has basically shut the door on first team match day experience for the club's own up and coming lads. There is real value in first team bench time but there has been precious little of that. Between them Whiteman, Brooks and Reed had just over a handful of games on the bench and I think had just a few minutes playing time between them at most last season.

Contrast that with Adkins and even more so Clough and you will see a different, more results driven approach now. Neither approach is right or wrong but from the perspective of young lads hoping to make their way in the game it is obvious last season was a nightmare compared with previous seasons.

Promotion was the prime target for Wilder and he thinks experience gets promotion. Nothing wrong with that if you are prepared to 'lose' the goodwill of young players and send a message to every young player in the club that there is no 'Pathway'. Does it do the club a disservice over the medium term, well United were at the stage when short term was the be all and end all.

Philip Reed above is probably Reed's dad or uncle. The comment about team orders at Hillsborough last night has a certain ring of truth about it. So does the comment about ' ever pulling on a red and white shirt again' and that is a great pity and over-emotional to be fair, nor does it have a 'ring of being Reed's dad about it', hope not anyway, it's counter-productive.

Summer 2016 Wilder made umpteen decisions about players in the squad. Unfortunately for Whiteman and Reed he decided nothing about them personally so they both marked time last season. That was a mistake and affected the lads' development. Both Reed and Whiteman excelled for the U-23's but so what? They were past that stage long ago, they needed first team playing time on loan.

The first time I saw Reed play I saw quality. In his first team games at the age of 17, I continued to see quality interspersed with inconsistency. When a player plays through balls like Reed did at QPR away for McNulty's goal it's time to sit up and take notice. I went to the Newcastle friendly with a Geordie pal and after 20 minutes he said who's that little lad, he's quality? He has it in his locker and over the past year he has added aggression and concentration. Player of the Season for the U-23's which included Brooks for many games by the way. My cousin at Chesterfield says he is delighted with Reed to date and says he gets a foot in alright.

If Reed never pulls on a Blades shirt again it is us who will be victims of circumstance because the lad will make his way at least in the Championship and with luck higher. Good luck to him and I hope it is with us. How bold Clough was to play him at 16 years old. Perhaps Reed should go to join him at Burton.

Thankfully Wilder sated that there might be more opportunities for youngsters this season, maybe because we will be mid-table, but Whiteman and Reed are elsewhere anyawy.

At Meadow Lane right now. Reed's looking OK, seems to be finding a lot of space but not really getting a huge deal of the ball, is getting stuck in a fair bit as well and getting talkative to the ref/opposition, which is nice. Had one snap shot from about 20 out off a weak clearing header, just wide, somehow down for a couple of minutes after a clash of heads.

As an aside the team lineups read as a who's who of didn't do it up front for us, and the ref is the really special kind that got booed off by both sets of fans at half time

It's funny how whenever it doesn't work out for a player at any club the family claim the player has been treated badly. Could it be a biased opinion? Either way I do wish the lad luck, he's definitely got something about him so hope he can develop it.

I can certainly understand the frustration at not being allowed to be loaned out last season. It was blindingly obvious that Wilder was set on his preferred midfield, and quite right too. Reed was never likely to be involved, even less so when we brought two more midfielders in during the January window. I did think at the time it was bizarre he wasn't allowed to leave.

Scored a very tidy goal last night and Chesterfield fans seem to really rate him.

Can't believe some of our fans have already written him off, when he's the same age as Brooks.
Decent player but has never kicked on. One of the areas i felt he needed to improve was goalscoring

That's exactly why he is there on loan and when the manager is saying it about you after just a few games there is a lot for him to build on.

I repeat that Reed will almost certainly be their Player of the Season and by the time we get him back he will hopefully have another 40 or so games to add to the 39 he has had for our first team and he is just 20 years old as of two months ago.

He is the type of footballer who plays at International level very comfortably and I'm sure he'll step up to the Championship well next season. If we are in the Prem next season that's a bit more complicated :).

The lad just needs games, he's got the talent there somewhere but was never going to get a proper run under us. Chesterfield is perfect for him. Wilder rates him, whatever some of the so called bladey blade peeps think

I rate him and I agree. He should've been out on loan long ago.

I can only assume CW and the academy staff felt he'd benefit from a season being coached properly and developing in the U23s. Apparently he did very well so I'd guess it's been good for his confidence. He's probably also learnt a lot being around a promotion winning squad.

It may have done him more good in the long term.
