What was their nickname before 97 then?

Actually, the article that I lent the image from has a pretty interesting account of their nickname(s) pre-97. It largely argues that they were always unofficially called the Black Cats and the painting, which is an early indication of the nickname's age, was done by a child to depict the clubs that Sunderland beat in their 1909 FA Cup run.

Hahah in fairness it probably isn't the worst pun ever, but that doesn't mean to say that it should be used as a strapline of an actual football club. Not quite as bad as variations on, "Rhodes leading to Swillsborough."
