I imagine over the cause of his 18 month stint, Beattie brought in enough cash, directly or indirectly (shirt sales, ticket sales, memorabilia etc.). As Bladesman stated though, if Everton do receive some proportion of the sale then I fear we will have suffered a significant loss - especially if it's the 25% rumored.

Exactly I thought we would atleast got the same amount we paid for him plus abit more considering the goals he has scored and also abit extra to cover any possible fee to Everton.

Good signing for them, they have a bargain.

You seriously need to hope you make a decent signing as a replacement, because Sharpe and Henderson won't get you promoted.

He's also older and had at least 1 operation on his knee too though.

I'd still have wanted more, but these are contributing factors.

The financial downturn has been extreme since we signed Beattie so to get £3.5million for him seems about right IMO because even higher up Prem teams than Stoke aren't paying huge money out like previous years.
£3.5 million plus Beattie's wages off the wage bill must be worth at least the other 1/2million if not more.

Oh lets not forget he had a "touch of the flu" aswell.

I guess thats a couple of 100k off the fee.

But has also scored quite a lot of goals. Mind ya, according to football heaven, penalties don't count.

Rumoured to cost us around £5million in wages had we been paying him for the next couple of years.

If Stoke have been reading our forums, its a wonder they paid that.... Given that his lazy and can't score from open play :D

What wages will a replacement cost us though?

Well to convert every penalty you have taken over a season and a half is rather good.

But should we get promoted, his goals will have been a major contributing factor ultimately worth a hell of a lot more cash

what will not having his goals cost us? money is all well and good, but we need a team thats good enough and so far this window we've weakened a team that wasn't among the strongest in the division to begin with. disappointed to say the least

Definitely, but other people have to make the decisions with far more information on the finances than us and they have to take the risk.

I'm sure if we could guarantee we'd get promoted by keeping him they'd have happily subsidised it.

I agree with sensiblade, also how long has beattie got left at the top? 2 seasons max if you ask me, he's been out of the prem a while now it will take the rest of this season to get back up to pace with it + he never looked the fittest of players any way.

Last season his goals made sure we didnt end up doing what Charlton are doing this season and this season his goals have made sure we are pointing in the right direction in the league. If that's not a reason to try and keep him then I don't know what is. Since Beattie has scored double the amount of goals the rest of our strikers have scored altogether this season.

I appreciate the risk. Especially should we not get promoted (even if Beattie was still here) then his additional wages would have been a waste.

I just can't help feeling hard done by in all this. Wish we'd have just sat him down and said you've got 'til May. Then if we are still stuck in this league the choice is yours. Looks like it has worked for 'Boro. Spurs given up already - just a week in

From what I am told Beattie had the clause in his contract to talk to anyone above in the table at a certain price.

So the players choice......

Read the point somewhere already that a high proportion of his goals have come from the spot. So how much does he offer from open-play?

Therefore, I don't see why with the addition of a proven goalscorer at this level we can't match what Beatts offered (oh and find someone who can score every penalty he takes in 62 games).

This isn't my qualm but instead the handling of the matter. I am disappointed in United as I have already stated and amazed at how McCabe chooses to demonstrate his ambition.

Surprise us please Kev'
GIT?

Waiting for us to reveal Jamie Ward of Creswell now

top banana

Prior Club Record
Season Team Appearances (sub) Goals
1996-1998 Blackburn Rvrs 1(3) + 2(2) 0 + 0
1998-2004 Southampton 161(41) + 27(4) 68 + 8

68 goals in 161 for southampton and 13 league goals in 51 apperances for eveton 2 of those goals were in his last season before he joined us, and quess what? You got it they were penalties..... So will he score enough to keep stoke up? Good championship goal scorer not so good prem goal scorer... But stoke will go down who ever they sign!!! And we will go up cos the BLADES keep marchin ON ON ON!!!!!

Feeling really cheesed off about this, and hope that McCabe has something up his sleeve. If we reach the end of the transfer window without someone coming in that'll make a difference McCabe will not be able to explain it away.

All teams sell players and it's usually th best players that get sold.
You don't see many managers going to a scout 'right go to Sheffield United and see who their worst player is so I can sign him' do you.
Best players attract other clubs and if they want to leave then better not to stop them than risk them sulking and still having to pay them.

I am still amazed how the lazy git who couldn't score a goal from open play is suddenly our lost saviour. He is and was a good player but it is still a team game, so we should focus on building a team.

Does not matter how you score them aslong you score. Especially in this division.

Cant see Henderson, Webber and Sharp converting every penalty they take.

My problem is not the sale of Beattie its the ridiculously low price we have sold him for!
Rising to 3.5m???? it should be a minimum of 3.5 up front rising to 5 or 6.... otherwise it is not worth selling him!!!
We will bring in someone useless to 'replace' him i can see it coming. So pissed off!!!!

Lincoln Blade

we are ment to be going for promotion though and selling our best or one of our best players is not going to help one bit!

Reading have not had a problem so far keeping their best players, some of them wanted more than beattie like doyle and hunt and birmingham are going out and spending money to strengthen their team along with wolves who still have kightly and ebanks blake.

Now can anyone tell me the difference between united and the above mentioned teams?

You may then find why alot of united fans are annoyed with what is happening at the club lately, i hope they prove me wrong and do bring in the required quality signings to get us back upto the premiership but at the moment all we are doing is signing squad players like bromby, who has merely been brought in as cover and not to form a new formidable centre back partnership with killa!

Blackwell always claimed that he will only bring in players that will challange for a starting role and not to just make up the numbers in the team and waste money! Well spring, dyer, cotterill, stokes, howard, henderson, I am yet to see any of these players really make the difference to our team and be the 'quality' signings Blackwell claimed he would only make.

Brummy seem to be pulling off a couple of decent transfers.

Especially if they land Boyd aswell.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the whole deal being completed rested on United getting a replacement. This would fit ib with the rumours beat tie agreed a deal on friday. I think something maybe announced tomorrow, and it best not be any of cress well ward or any of the other players that are not fit to lick beats boots. We need a lita, chopra, or even go for boyd from rangers, it needs to be a good player otherwise mccabe will have a real problem coming eith the fans!

Are we not counting Kitson, Shorey and Sonko? Olofinjana?

Exactly my point, Buozza (sp) Sinclair and Bowyer all in on loan are quality signings and trying to get a gaolscorer like Boyd in and spend alot of money doing it shows what a club should be doing that wants to get back in the premiership asap.

Lets hope Mccabe and Blackwell have a plan, otherwise i fear Ian Hamilton and Bobby Ford may be dusting their boots down and pulling on the red and white shirt shortly!
