Changing Positions

For us? If not, you could be thinking of Dion Dublin.
Definitely for us, I'm sure it was someone like Neil Shipperley, a big player who went from up front to defence. I wish I'd not gotten rid of my old programes cos I'd definitely be able to figure it out with a few old team sheets.

Joe Mercer tried to surprise Liverpool when we played them at Anfield in December 1956. He played Graham Shaw (our usual left back) at right wing, Howard Johnson (centre back) at centre forward and Jeff Smith (our reserve left back) at left wing in his only game for us. It didn't work as we got hammered by 5-1!

Kyle walker started as a striker. He went to High Storrs and was a couple of years above me. Was up top due to his pace. Then one of the sports teachers moved him to right wing. In his early days for United in the academy he played on the wing. Then he made his debut for United at CB I think with morgan vs Hull int Cup and scored an own goal which never actually crossed the line. And the rest is history

Paul Madeley of Leeds United was the archetypal 'utility' player. I believe he played every position for them, perhaps barring keeper.

Someone said that Jags went from centre mid to centre back, he also played a couple of seasons at right back.

Bassett seemed to be very fond of getting players to play in different positions. Bradders was initially signed as a striker before moving to wide midfield and eventually full back.

Kyle Naughton scored the "own goal"

Who was the pundit who said something absolutely nonsensical like "I know all of the ball has to over all of the line, but for me it's a goal"? I want to say Steve McManaman.

Jags started out as a CM for us and is now one of the best CB's in the country.

I also seem to remember a CB moving between CB and CF quite often in the late 90's but can't for the life of me remember who it was.
Dougie Hodgson

His debut was at Orient at full back. Played CB at Hull the following month and had a cracking game.
Naughton was the player involved in the phantom goal, which the TV screens at the ground clearly showed hadn't crossed the line, although it was clear to anyone watching from the away end it hadn't gone in.

I think it was vs. Millwall where Warnock stuck Morgan up front at the end of a game where we were desperate for a goal.
