There are plenty of examples over the years of young players from lower leagues but playing regularly coming up for relatively low money.
Clubs have paid a million or two for the likes of Andre Gray, Vardy, Che Adams etc and although at the time looks expensive for non league or league two strikers turns out to be a bargain in the end.

When the next up and coming player is starting to make a mark somewhere, we need to be the ones stumping up those kids of fees and taking the risk, rather than sitting back, making half an effort, waiting too long and losing out to a Bournemouth, or a Swansea or a Burnley for example.
We need our scouts to be right on the game.

Well in the short time since he left us he's won a World Cup,scoring the winning goal, played in Europe, something none of our players have ever done and cemented his position as a striker in one of the countrys biggest Premiership clubs.

I'd say he's smashing fuckin lot up.

As a point of interest Lundstram played at <20 World Cup n'all (&win same squad as Long !?!?!)

Every transfer is a gamble - some will come off, some won't. Tbf CW and co have a very impressive success rate since joining so it is fairly inconceivable that many on here are doubting his choices especially when Utd's budget is considered. A lot of people criticising linked players (usually without suggesting alternatives), seemingly are not aware of how much proven and in-form >L1 level or above strikers would cost. Perhaps seeing the fee paid for Asombalonga and Fulham's supposed offer for the one who strikes (in more ways than one) over at the Darkside will give them an idea. Until Utd are able to compete at that sort of level (without putting the future of the club at risk), then punts will have to be taken on players who for one reason or another are below their maximum market value. Sinclair would be a great example. If, and it is an if, CW can get him firing, he could prove to be another excellent and good value signing.

As said CW/AK/Mitchell seem to have a good eye for a player and can also get the best out of them. Who knows this kid could be the next Tammy Abrahams which would be great but would mean we wouldn't keep him for long. As for scoring goals we have a kid that can do it already if you get the ball to him in the 18 yard box. What we need is someone with some pace and athleticism up front and JS seems to fit those criteria. Just hope he does not block Brooks' chances and development.

Don't disagree with any of that but the $1m question is who would you sign as an additional striker to fill the gaps Utd's current options have and considering the budget constraints (for both fee and salary)?

To be fair I don't watch enough football of the lower leagues, nor do I play football manager games that list players and their compute attributes to have enough knowledge to suggest players.
But those players will be out there, whether in the Uk, Europe or whatever. That's why a club in our position really has to have the scouting set up right.

If we do anything with the money brought in this summer I would be advocating making the scouting network one of the best in the country. It might cost, but IMHO would be a cost worth paying. Short term pain, long term game.

Yeah, anyone who quotes bald statistics to prove that Player A or Player B is either a good or bad player is making sweeping generalisations.

I won't be drawn on your other non sequiturs.

Agree. Deane scored 6 a season at Donny.

It means fuck all. DCL was sold to fund incoming purchases to get us promoted. I'm fine with that.

No. Ched isn't guaranteed to be a hit. Far from it. But he was good before. Very good in fact. In all honesty I think he was the best centre forward I've seen down there since Dearden, Edwards and Deane. He was simply unplayable at his best. I'd love to see that lad resurrect his career after all he's gone through. (Of his own stupidity I agree).

But everyone deserves a second chance.

He's way off at the moment - we can all see that. But let's give the lad an opportunity without criticising him. If it works out - fantastic. If not we did the right thing allowing him that chance.
Why does everyone and everything have to be compared to ched? Since when is he the barometer of a good player? If we are comparing to ched then billy sharp is Pele!

I always consult Watford and Birmingham fans when I want an opinion on football. They're the tops. I won't bother forming my own opinion now they've spoken.
We don't see eye to eye but fair fucks that's funny.

Thank you. Glad you liked it.

Actually we agree on quite a lot. I would simply encourage you to be a little less emphatic in your own assertions and perhaps acknowledge that one or two of us have been around United and football for a long time.

I would encourage you to not come across so arrogant and as the all seeing eye.

I'm sure neither of us will heed this advice, but that's life. We are all blades.

I can understand why you say that and I share your enthusiasm for young Brooks.

However, Sheffield United is what matters. If someone can improve our team they can block Brooks and anyone else all day and all night. Players, young, mature or antique, are here for the Blades; not the other way round.

We're in to double figures in pages. He's not coming.

For me that's Hulse and Sharp – Hulse for his contribution at the highest level, and Sharp for his last two seasons. Sharp has just this season already managed a third of Evans's entire tally in the Championship for us.

Do you think Evans playing in a shit team with a shit manager might have contributed to his lack of goals?

It's possible. But didn't seem an issue for Cresswell or Henderson that first season, so probably not.

Yes agree Sheffield Utd is what matters but JS is on loan and is unlikely to be within our budget for a permanent move particularly if he does well. So he is a short term fix whereas Brooks is contracted to us until 2019 so is a long term investment which hopefully will improve the more he plays. Even if we have to sell him we will get a sizeable transfer fee for the benefit of Sufc.

Good point. Cresswell managed 5 goals in 35 appearances. Henderson managed 14 in 40 appearances, Evans 9 in 34 appearances. It was my point you were confirming wasn't it?

17 career games.
2 career goals.

As others have stated. He's not started all of those. He has been in a top end prem side and then a shite Brum side who were nearly relegated and a Watford team with a revolving door in the managers office.

He's quality when on song. If he knuckles down he will be the best player in our squad.

Many wanted Chapman back on loan, this kid is double the player. Hence Chapman has ended up in L1 again

By all accounts this lad is a done deal but Norwich are also interested and have also made an approach

James Beattie was better than all of them.

James Beattie was better than all of them.

Unfortunately my memory of Beattie is somewhat ruined by his 2nd spell where he showed one of the worst pieces of unprofessionalism I've witnessed with his ridiculous sending off at Exeter – resulting in a suspension for all of the playoff games at a time we desperately needed some sense (and some strikers).

This seems to be dragging on a little, hope hes coming otherwise it's gonna be a mad scramble come Thursday. I saw Hughill has handed a transfer request in at Preston.
