So I’m on holiday in Ireland and wandering down a street in a small town called Ballinamore in County Leitrim, when I noticed a disused shop window covered in old newspapers. All the newspapers were from 1953 and were showing their age, with a distinct shade of yellow, and most of the newspapers showed the Coronation. However one newspaper in particular caught my eye.

It showed the football scores for Ireland and England for Saturday 31st January 1953.

ENGLISH CUP – FOURTH ROUND

Arsenal 6 Bury 2
Aston Villa 0 Brentford 0
Blackpool 1 Huddersfield 0
Bolton 1 Notts County 1
Burnley 2 Sunderland 0
Chelsea 1 West Brom 1
Everton 4 Notts Forest 1
Halifax 1 Stoke 0
Hull 1 Gateshead 2
Manchester City 1 Luton 1
Manchester United 1 Walthamstow 1
Newcastle 1 Rotherham 3
Plymouth 1 Barnsley 0
Preston N E 2 Tottenham 2
Sheffield United 1 Birmingham 1
Shrewsbury 1 Southampton 4

Interesting results for Halifax, Gateshead and Walthamstow! The scorer for United is misspelt and shown as Hagen, rather than Hagan. United lost the replay 3-1 the following Wednesday.

Looking at the records for United for that season, I note that Hagan was sent off during a 7-1 home win over Swansea! Does anyone know why? It seems a bit pointless during a 7-1 win.

United went on to win the Division Two Championship that season and so losing in the Cup didn’t prove costly in the long run.

Have seen a video clipping of the 1-1 home draw. Will try and find it in you tube

You can see Hagan's goal and Birmingham's equalizer in below video (1 min 16 secs)

Saw bigger horrors than Jaws in there when it became the Embassy.

Wrong building, the Rex became a supermarket.

Yeah, did get me thinking after I posted that. I remember going to Embassy 75ish but was sure Rex was open a lot later than that. Cleared that one up!

I was born in 79,was it gone before then?
I saw A chritmas carol in about 75 and I think I saw Gregorys Girl just before it closed in about 81 ,I know I had left school anyway ,took a lass from Rackhams where I was working..
Remember seeing Stardust at Abbeydale too not long before that closed.
Also queueing right up that tunnel at the ABC to see towering inferno.

I had a mate worked at Rackhams about that time. I always stood on the kop with him for years. I think he did something with window displays, Ian was his name. Ring any bells Sitters?
