You'd turn down a pay rise even though you knew if you were really dissatisfied with the board you could still quit at a later date?

Not turn it down exactly, just a delay in signing it as a tactic to try and get a feel for whether my chairman is being genuine regarding what the budget was agreed/promised.

As for a pay rise money comes second for me, but that's just me.

Why delay signing it if hes happy with what hes been offered
Delay signing a contract may give possible transfer targets doubt in their mind that the manager was not happy and that Wilder maybe off if the chance of moving elsewhere came about

You're overthinking this one, I think!

We don't actually know if Wilder has said he's pleased with the budget given (unless he has and I've missed it).

But besides when it comes to McCabe what he says and what he does are two very different things, he's hardly got a track record of keeping his promises has he?

Costa (not the coffee) until January would do nicely. Would cost about £2m in wages and would guarantee 20 goals. Where's the ambition Prince Kevin ?

"Wilder also says he is "hopeful" of making a breakthrough in the transfer market, possibly later this week"

Not exactly filling me with confidence that we're going to be bringing in 3/4 before September, but I'd rather have honesty than bs spin.

I'm hoping it's cunning misdirection and we'll sign a couple tomorrow. He likes his misdirection.

There's no spin from anyone. We want to bring in four players. We have offers in totalling millions. We can't march players to the Lane at gunpoint.

Your first two paragraphs are not a neat logical fit. He's hopeful of one this week but intends to bring in four before the deadline if he possibly can.

What promises has he made? As opposed that is, to expressions of hope or intention.

I've been following the Blades throughout his time in office and he's never promised me anything.

If I was Wilder I would've put the signing of the contract on the back burner until after the transfer window had closed to make McCabe think:

  • that I mean business
  • that I need you to provide enough funds for us to be able to achieve our goals
  • that I won't be taken for granted just because I'm a Blade.

In a cheap television melodrama or a daft conspiracy theory, yes.

In truth KM knows all of the above and Tufty is well aware that he does.

Do you think they live in some sort of air-locked bubble, blissfully unaware of the things people on here know so well, and communicate only by registered post?

I love the idea that Wilder should hold his employer to ransom.

Oh, there's always plenty to love as Jim White Day approaches twice a year. The fax machine; the sofa in Brussels; the fake offers; the chairman's duplicity; the lack of ambition; the impending sales of our finest 6-year olds.

All human life (and some a little more dubious) is here.

If you didn't have a feel for it after working with him for a year then I'm not sure you're ever going to.

Yes, that was my point. There is no spin. Under past regimes, we've been fed spin.

According to the shitrag Star (the 'Daily' not 'Sheffield' so as not to confuse), Costa is on £185k per week.

Being generous and assuming you meant the start of January, that is 18 weeks @ £185k = £3.33m. Add on employers national insurance at 13.8% and you get a grand total of £3.79m or £4m in round terms.

If people are going to make silly statements they could at least vaguely associate them with some reality.

What I meant getting a feel for is in relation to the apparent bigger budget being made available once we'd returned to the Championship, granted there is still nine days left yet plus the JTW so time will tell.

Seriously though, how much discussion do you think Wilder has had with the board over this? Figures will have been agreed ages ago and then, since the Walker etc deals, probably revised.

Noe you're just being ridiculous.

Everybody knows they use Telegram ;)

OK maybe 'promises' wasn't the right word, but promises or not he's done different to what he's said he was going to do in the past.

Do you really think that is the case though?

It doesn't really seem that way to me, in the interviews McCabe has done over the course of the summer and in the build up to this season he's not come across very well often saying the wrong things, such as the patronising/bigoted statement when he said "Wilder's a lucky boy isn't he" in relation to his new contract. You could say McCabe was only joking and maybe he was but I'd say he wasn't completely joking. When things couldn't be better McCabe is very happy to show his face and carry out plenty of interviews like he has done these past couple of months or so, but when its not going so well you don't see or hear from him for a long while.

He gives me the impression he hasn't truly learnt lessons from the countless mistakes he's made, Wilder's appointment has been a saviour for the club but for me he's sort of stumbled across him, he's bound to make a good appointment every once in a while after getting so many others wrong.

I wasn't really looking at it that way about how much discussion Wilder and the board may or may not have had, at the end of the day actions speak louder than words for me.

This genuinely got me thinking, I know you were taking the piss, but just for a laugh could we test the water?

Before I get shot to pieces hear me out.
He's done at Chelsea, full stop, never going to play for them again.
Clearly wants to go back to Athletico, but they're under a transfer ban until January, so they can't get him this summer.
...
Get Roman on the phone, tell him we'll chuck £30,000 a week towards his wages until January, in exchange we'll get him match fit ready for his transfer back to Spain.

Surely this would be a win for all parties?
...
Is it possible? Or have I forgotten to take my pills again?

He's on £185k a week and worth £30 -£40m so do you really think that £30k per week would offset the risk of serious injury by some Championship centre half.

Put another way, would you lend me your Aston Martin for a spin if I promised to top up the windscreen washer and put a couple of gallons in the tank?

Pink Fiat 500 convertible?

I also thought Coady was acers and skill when he was here before as an attacking midfielder, but my impression was he has been playing deeper for Wolves than when he was on loan with us, which would suggest that he is a replacement/upgrade for Fleck or (more likely) Coutts. Is that really the priority? I'd say another CB and a Championship-class foil for Sharp up top are more pressing priorities. I'd also say that further signings are probably contingent on our moving Brooks on, pure speculation but that's what it feels like we are being softened up for.

You make a good point re brooks, but i'll tell you what, that lad is our survival in this league, he can create, score, play without fear and run at defenders with ease, if were being softened up to accept his sale in order to get a couple of £500k squad players in then I'll be really angry and will be up for any protest to see the chairman removed from the club.. i'm sick of seeing the future of our club sold down the river so kevin mcabe can play at being a chairman, the rot has to stop, he has to back the manager with his money like he did with robson, the difference is that Wilder will create a entertaining team on the pitch, Imagine wilders team with half the backing Robson got...

How are you going to "remove" the bloke that owns the club? Unless you are intending to buy it from him  UTB

So if we've put big bids in for players like Lenihan does that constitute action? Or are you saying that if you were Wilder, you wouldn't have signed a new contract until we'd signed all the players you wanted? If so, fair enough, that's your opinion but I doubt many would agree with you. I certainly don't. I'll be honest, I took a bonus and a pay rise whilst I was actively looking for another job. I'd have been a mug not to.

Don't think KFC to Maccy D's really counts.
