im not going to go overboard about a narrow defeat at the favourites, i thought on the whole we acquitted ourselves well, i loved the system we played last season and still think it has a big future for us especially at home, but there are going to be many occasions like today if we play it every week away, after we went to 4-4-2 we looked a lot more solid and a little more dangerous in posession, today bamford always seemed to have space, and a lot of teams at this level will have that roaming attackig midfielder, we missed a bit of energy in there today and hopefully that will come with a new signing or 2 or the players we currently have adapting, but for me at cardiff i would go 4-4-2 with basham sitting just behind fleck and coutts, just feel his tacking and strength would help nullify the threat from certain opposition this season, allowing coutts and fleck a bit more time, as at the moment i feel we are not seeing the best of either of them as they are a little overrun in there, 2 on 2 or even 2 on 3 in league one they controlled games, its not going to happen here and maybe they need a little extra help in there. thoughts??

Keep it the same.

We were in awe of apparent better players too much between 15 and 45 minutes.

We were better 2nd half and we will soon realise this league is NOT what the piggies would have us believe.

We of course need to learn lessons very quickly:

1) it's 11 v 11 - do not be in awe of the opposition.
2) you need to be a yard quicker thinking.
3) you need to "show" earlier for the ball.
4) First touch, at this level is absolutely vital.
5) Boro showed that teams close down quicker - hence 2 to 4 above is important.
6) You MUST take chances, or make the GK work - that is aimed at Clarke after 10 minutes - you must think and act quicker.

Shame there is a game on Tuesday - hopefully back to school on Wednesday to learn the above.

Reckon the basic template's fine, the players are used to it, the new recruits have been brought in to play within it.

But do agree we need the option of switching to 4-4-2 (which tbf did happen at times last season). Don't think it made a great deal of difference today, other than allowing Brooks to get some time on the pitch.

And agree with the Basham-in-midfield option at Cardiff, as part of a three though.

I know it goes against the "let them worry about us, rather than us worrying about them" ethos, but they're flying, & they present a hell of a rugged challenge. Let's face it, they'll be the polar opposite of Brentford.

Reckon also that, like Middlesbro, Cardiff will finish top 6 this season.

No but we may need to think about an holding midfielder, this would mean leaving one of Coutts or Fleck out though.

Formation works if we have pace and power up front. We ain't got that.

we had the same 2 forwards last season, using 3-5-2 worked pretty well then, just feel we have lost both midfield battles so far

I feel we have lost today because a of Lino blind cunt. Our midfield cost zillions less than theirs but we were always competitive.

i love fleck and couttsy, but just re watched it and we were really outnumbered and overrun in there, when we got it we had no time, they always had the free man, not saying for every game but i think against certain teams we need to adapt and stifle them in the middle of the park

Quite simply the formation is fine and Wilder won't be changing it any time soon. We just need a couple of players who can make a difference in a game like this.
I'd say the players are fine, the experience really showed though.

Their goal JOC dragged out wide. Stearman and Basham failed to deal with a ball in the air
