Dominic Calvert Lewin

I kept flicking over to the Everton match last night and, although little more than a pre-season friendly, I'd say Everton have bigger problems than whether D C-L will make it. Lukaku gone, Rooney utterly past it and Barkley treading water for the last three years, the Toffees were extremely poor and 2-0 flattered them.

Anyway, more on Calvert-Lewin. (WARNING! It's from the Mail, so any snowflakes have been warned!)

I didn't get him when he made a few cameos for us, didn't get him for the u20s and still don't get him now.

Probably why I'm not a scout, but he must be doing a whole lot behind the scenes to convince people of his ability because I've see nothing when he's had exposure.

Even the Everton fans haven't clue what he's offering.

The Everton fans that I work with and the few season ticket holders I know are 50/50 about him!!. Most say they don't know what he brings to a game but comes up with a goal every so often and it seems to impress the management team over here!!. I could never decide on him when I saw him at bdtbl?. Brooks is a lot better!. I M O.

I think Koeman likes grafters and people that put effort in. That's all I see in him so far.

Cracking Mrs mind, who'd have guessed.

I'm not at all surprised that he's being successful. He was only just turned 19 when he left us and looked very good at league 2 level even at that young age. Struggled in our first team but was clearly very athletic and just needed a bit more strength and guile. Still a way to go but with the right attitude I'd say got a big career ahead of him.

With his long contract there, he's already guaranteed to make more from football than I ever will in my career and I'd consider myself quite successful.

So by all accounts, he's a success.

Playing in the premier league at 20, playing in Europe and just played in his first competitive game of the season and scored. Yeah he's crap.

I'm sorry, but there's amateur players play in Europe and in competitive games.... Hardly the foundations of a case.

Everton are probably banking on being able to coach the football side of things in to him from a young age, to build on the athleticism and size he has, which are perfect for a footballer.

That's what I'm guessing anyway because I've probably seen him play 20 or so times now and he's done absolutely nothing to suggest he will be Premier League standard.

Not sure anyone is saying he is crap, just that he wasn't good enough for us and isn't good enough for a Premier League side.

Go on an Everton forum and see what they say about him, they cant believe he is near the first team.

Good luck to him, but selling him didnt bother me in the slightest.

Revelation for me is that Rooney is back at Everton, that's how much notice I take of the PL goings on.

Ditto Che Adams. Never easy at that age. Could say the same about those other 'Great White Hopes' Diego and Louis Reed.

No although there are 91 other clubs who will disagree with me.
Thank god the academy brought through DCL from 8 years old to help finance our rebuilding last Summer to help finance CW.

Thank god there has been £8m raised from sell on clauses from a couple of our academy kids..... Just to help CW on his way.

I hope you are joking !!

It's going to provide us with a lot of income over the next few years. Money we'll need to progress. Not a chance anyone would consider closing it.

He played very well when he came on last night.

How much did we lose the last four years, lucky if it breaks even.

Nowt but a drain and a supply for OTHER clubs.

The academy was "well in profit" according to McCabe in April 2016. Since then it has brought in around ten million pounds. We'd be mental to close it.It also provides us with a subsidised training ground for our first team. Not bad for one million pounds a year. It is a profit making part of the club which subsidises the loss making part of the club. From time to time, the players also enhance our first team.

Not doomed but little progress if we rely on the academy.
No one and no club rely on their academy.
We certainly don't . That's why we have signed so many players year on year.
If a young player comes through and makes the club some money then all good.
Our academy is good at that and it goes into the signings we need at first team level.

If you don't like the academy system then that's fine but sadly for you it's part of the modern day football club.

I like my Irn Bru in a glass bottle but they put it in shitty plastic bottles these days.
Sadly for me it's just how it is.

Love to hear people like you who clearly know as much about football as I do nuclear physics you cock!! Sheff Utds academy is the bollox with many coming through and will shine in the next 2 years.... but you keep reading the star and forums like this to keep up to date with things as for me I'll keep watching the 17's 23's first team to make my judgement UTB
