Can't neck it like I used to with 4JD in a pint pot full of ice and Coca Cola. A few of them got you warmed up for an afternoon of screaming abuse. Now Ideally 3 proper pints of beer or ale between 5 and 6% in the hour and a half before a game. A pint of piss if desperate for a top up during game but prefer pies. After depends on what wife allows or I can sneak past her.

I know there are those against the whole, match, drinking, up and down pissing etc, HOWEVER it happens and appears to happen a lot amongst us Blades.

Its not big or clever, however is anyone else's perception of our fans include a following, more than most clubs, who have a liking for the more social side of the game?

Home games have always been a quick pint before and at half time but normally drive, although I don't bother at all now as my body is a temple.

Away matches used to be drink x number of cans on the bus/train then 4/5 more pints before the match and the same again after, looking back I can hardly recall a game. I drove to the odd weekday away game but generally used away games as an excuse for an all dayer.

Booze used to get me into a lot of tangles at the weekend so I drink very much in moderation nowadays. Living in a country where it's £15 a pint and hard work to get to a bar helps.

Don't even drink at home anymore, I used to get in from works and go to the fridge then have 2 or 3 every night, don't see the point any more, I got fit and want to stay this way so booze is the devil.

My eldest brother is also into doing the real ale rounds CB , he and my nephew went a couple of months back , he said the pubs were decent but a few of the clientele had an extra digit on the their hands ! He still says Sheff a lot better on that front obviously a totally impartial view through completely unbiased nor partisan glasses

Saturday matches.- the opposite really...sometimes meet up with mates and have a couple of pints of finest real ale before the game, (something around 6% with a long hoppy finish that makes me go "ooh") but don't go for a drink afterwards.

Away matches - different matter: This to me is a golden opportunity to do a bit of research on the best pubs in a more unfamiliar area. When I say "best pubs" it's mainly the choice of beer that attracts me, especially if they have beer from local microbreweries and not the ubiquitous fake real ale like Black Sheep and Doombar and all that trash. But it's not only the beer. I may pick out pubs for other reasons - good food, beautiful location, historic or architectural interest. Places like this one for example:

It's not a particularly great pub for beer, but it is of architectural interest, being severely listed due to subsidence. It's a weird sensation being inside because you can literally roll a coin, (or ball bearing which they have behind the bar) uphill on the window ledge. And after a few minutes of being in there you feel disoriented and that's not to do with the beer.

Or this one...

Beautiful country pub with rustic features. Including (or used to be including) pre-filled clay pipes with cherry tobacco for a £1. It's like this on the inside...

Or how about this one?

The first pic is an exact replica of the image I see of my gaff after returning from ' I'm only going out for an early one love , I shouldn't be too late back ' at 1:30 am session ... For me it depends on who we are playing, when it is, what my mates are doing etc. A normal Saturday home match would mean I'd probably have 3 before and then maybe 2 afterwards.

Away games I can rarely remember how many I've had, unless I go in the car, which is rare.

In terms of quantity. Home or away:- only a couple before kick off, genuinely, I hate needing a piss once we've kicked off

Then a few more afterwards depending on how I'm getting home. Sometimes nip off and just a few back at a local boozersuch as the Coach and Horses.

Always had a drink before/after game not bothered in ground , its part of the day , game and working class culture I was brought up on & damn proud of that not ashamed , for all those that don't like this or want to change this go and watch ice hockey or basketball & have a pre match meal at Frankie & Benny's ....personally you can like it or fkg lump it for me , I was probably watching football long before the anti drinking brigade jumped on the band wagon & I'll still be there after the Sky TV bubble has burst.

Think you're rant is a little unwarranted, at the point you posted this not one person has said anything negative about drinking and football. I bet the vast majority who post on here indulge in a good few beverages before, during & after the match.

To add to the discussion, I've proper fell out with booze at the moment, it just makes me feel like shit, gone are the days when I enjoyed a good piss up now I have good few beers and all I want to do is sleep and then the hangovers I now get make it not worth it. I used to be that bloke on the coach with a litre of Jäger & two cans of red bull, just to start the day off! Not anymore, rather have a bottle of water and not feel like shit. I haven't stopped drinking I still like the odd pint, especially on holiday but the last time I got drunk was my wedding night 16 months ago, the Mrs wasn't impressed and I was a hungover mess for the honeymoon journey to the airport.

Don't know if it's an age thing or what but I've just totally fallen out with alcohol, I quit smoking in 2005, I haven't touched owt illegal for 5 years in fact I think I'm now just a boring old bastard.

Ps don't give a shit whatever anyone else does if you want to get bladdered or take drugs or whatever I say good luck old chap!

It's an age thing (well it's my excuse and I'm sticking to it). Don't get rat arsed anymore haven't done for quite some time. Have a few drinks now and again, but never to excess can't deal with it. A couple before a game is my norm, and maybe one or two after, journey permitting, is my limit.

I know exactly what you mean. It just doesn't agree with me anymore. As you say, I think it's an age thing. Don't mind the odd pint or glass of wine with a meal but I rarely get proper hammered these days. And I used to...proper fucked.
