It was not a release clause, it was a figure requested by charlton during negotiations, they then moved the goalposts. Cannot see us doing any more business with them.

James Shield didn't say he had a release clause though.Tell James Shield mate!
I think the article in the Star refers to the figure Charlton wanted. If Holmes had this as a clause in his contract they would have been power-less.

No. Charlton told us 400k would be his price. We offered that. They then upped the price."Sources in London last night claimed that United’s first offer, believed to be in the region of £400,000, matched the figure they had been told would trigger the 30-year-old’s release before Karl Robinson’s side demanded an even higher.
James Shield definitely refers to a release clause above. It seems he definitely thought we met a release clause.

The was no release clause in his contract. His contract isn't referred to.
The 400k figure is what charlton said not what anything in his contract quoted.
Where is the word 'clause' mentioned?Ok I might be been dumb here mate but above - taken from the Star today - it says "matched the figure they had been told would trigger the release clause"?
Now from that info I can only assume that the figure told must have been wrong - maybe from an agent - and in fact its still below the release clause, or, there never was one but James Shield clearly states a release clause unless he has been wrongly informed.
Where is the word 'clause' mentioned?
Yeah could have been worded better. In essence we called Charlton and asked for a price, they told us one and we offered it. They then put the price up. Which is quite within their rights, which it wouldn't have been had there been a release clause. It doesn't and maybe you're right after all that! It just seems like he is inferring that but maybe I've put two and two together and got 5! When Shield says would trigger his release then I think its a fair conclusion that is what he meant but I think its just poor journalism by Shield. In my view the article is misleading and you're likely to be right not me!

I'm just glad to be right and someone admit it for a change.Aye that's what made me think that it didn't make sense. However its just me misunderstanding the article!

I'll be home to the wife soon and normal service can be resumed.
Wilder confirmed today that Holmes wanted to come here, we agreed a fee and then Charlton moved the goal posts on the fee. He then said he could have spent 800k on him but it didn't represent value for money, so I'm guessing that's where they went with the price....
Where did he confirm this s5?
If so think it's sensible - at 500k would have been a decent acquisition but for nearly a million think you'd be wanting some longer term value from him or at least someone proven at this level.
I wonder / hope the walker deal might mean we can look a level up from Holmes and so we've just gone nah whenthey started playing silly buggers.
Marbella, was an open training session and had a q&a with the fans and someone asked him

Holmes is a money grabbing twat who we didn't need and I said this from the start, apart from the 'twat' bit.But Holmes said it was a no-brainer to stay at Charlton?!![]()
I think maybe we are being a tad harsh on the lad, we never matched the valuation Charlton had for him, he did not sign for a contract with Charlton for weeks as it dragged on and he was given an improved one, which he would hardly turn down, still did not sign, probably looked and thought Sheffield United are not going to raise there bid, I have a better offer from current employers I should sign it and settle down ready for the pre-season and training.
I would think it went a little a long those lines, I still think he would have been a great addition and Wilder having previously managed him would know his strengths and weaknesses plus his character.
I think it was pretty widely reported that Charlton said what the fee would need to be (around £500k) which we met, for then Charlton to then change their mind and up the price.
Can we confine this thread to the bin now.
I was really not that bothered about him, never played above league one pushing 30. Out of the 3 players that have taken over the rumours board he was the one I was least bothered about.
The Southend and Blackburn lads are a different matter.
