When I posted my thread on The Great Joe Shaw, the first to respond was TD with the very perceptive remark " At least there's one deserved statue in the car park " - one which I'm sure reflects the feelings of many , many Blades fans.

That being the case, is it not time that we petitioned the club to have it removed and replaced with one which is much more appropriate ? Such a petition could provide them with the perfect excuse for doing so, since next year marks the 50 th. Anniversary of the debut for the Blades of the man voted as being our Greatest Ever Player, the wonderful TC.

Obviously, there are any number of reasons why this should be the case and, if they resist, perhaps we could demand a Brexit style referendum amongst registered fans, with a simple ' Up or Down' replacing 'In or Out'.

I hope there's someone out there with the time and inclination ( and possibly influence ) to lead such a campaign and I'd be interested to hear what others think.

PS. Put me down for a down, so to speak.

I am also a downer!

There should be just 3 statues - Joe Shaw, Jimmy Hagan and TC. I've always thought that the shot of TC on my avatar would make a great statue.

But maybe one of Nudger as well as he lifted 3 major trophies.

We could also leave a plinth ready for Tufty holding the Prem League trophy aloft!

Now that would be Magic.

In case there's any doubt, I was obviously referring to ' The Other One', not the one of the Great Man himself.

Why thank you! 'Perceptive' is one of the nicer adjectives that have been ascribed to my many musings :)

I should point out at this stage that my comment probably came across as being more acerbic than intended. In no way do I intend to denigrate Derek Dooley, who was by every account a thoroughly decent man, and of course served us well in his role at United.

But being a nice bloke who was on the clubs board for a bit doesn't warrant being immortalised in bronze. It's a slap in the face to the many figures in the clubs past who have served us in a far more tangible way.
The Dooley statue is clearly a concession to a man who is a prominent figure in the city of Sheffield itself, having being connected with the other lot.
But when it comes to putting up statues of people in the Bramall Lane car park I have no interest in those who represent "the city", I want to see somebody who represented Sheffield United exclusively. We already have a road named after him, a statue in our car park is inappropriate as far as I'm concerned.

I won't reel off a list of the great players or managers who should take its place as I don't want the thread to turn into a debate over their respective merits, and besides which, any one of them would be a preferable option.

So to summarise. I'm a "down".

Is a statue of Derek Dooley actually doing any harm? If it's removed would it make one jot of difference to the team and its performance on the pitch? I personally think it would be insensitive to have it removed.

I suppose those advocating such a move would be in favour of 'phoning Mrs Dooley and asking her to come down and pick it up as it's served its useful purpose and we've other things to do with our precious car park.

Agreed. I can see the point of view of those who suggest there may be others more appropriate for a statue, but Dooley certainly deserves recognition. The time for any protest has already been and gone imo. The only possible action you could take would be relocation to another site of similar importance.

Aren't statues usually erected after they have passed away? Unless of course yo are a dictator from somewhere like say NK, now that would be fuckin hilarious if chancer had one erected at s6

When did it become a one in one out policy? By all means, petition for a statue of TC, Jimmy Hagan or Billy The Dog. That doesnt mean Derek's has to be melted down, though.

.

Loved him as a player, idolised him as a kid. But, medals on the table, success in a Blades shirt means I will continue with my campaign for the most successful Sheffield United player and captain:

I take all the points against removing a statue. When the Cherry Street / Shoreham corner is redeveloped as a big megastore etc maybe Dooley could move there.

Statues of Needham, Hagan, Shaw and TC across the front would really emphasise our playing history - and you don't have to be dead. Bobby Charlton has been up at Manure for nearly 10 years. Actually, they have the Holy Trinity statue there of Best, Charlton and Law, so maybe TC and Woody together would symbolise that time the best.

Hopefully, as I said, that would leave a space that will be filled in the future by a new legend lifting the Prem League trophy. It's been a long time since 1898 when Nudger did that!

One thing less appropriate than a Derek Dooley statue in the bramall lane car park would be removing a Derek Dooley statue. I agree there are more worthy United legends, but you can't just pull it down

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the Dooley statue should be moved somewhere in the town centre where both sets of fans can enjoy it.

Dooley kept United afloat in the 70's & 80's on the commercial side. He was also a stabilising factor on the board in the 90's when the club was tearing itself apart. I think a few on here are doing him a disservice and it doesn't make for very pleasant reading.

That the pigs lay claim to Dooley is another myth emanating from that end of town. He played less than two seasons for them and got fired after two seasons as a not too successful manager. He's one of ours, fuck the pigs.

Hagan, Needham, TC and Gillespie for me - covers the years

The dislike of The Dooley statue on here is childish and embarrassing.
Yeh .... I always think of the record 46 Goal Scoring Season he had for Wednesday

Maybe I should focus on the Admin work he did for United .............

It is rumoured he did buy the Fax Machine :)

There's nothing in the rule book that says statues have to be of players. We've got one of our famous players and one of our famous directors. The next one should be one of our famous fans. Shred.
