If we stick with the formation that was so successful las season how would you line the back 3 up?

I would probably try

Stearman - Wright - JOC

Harsh on Basham I know but I think we will make use of Stearman as the right sided ball playing CB. JOC naturally in the same role on the left. Wright sat sweeping up as the last line of defence.

The next best option is to switch Stearman to Wright's role and start Basham at RCB. But then we are dropping Mr Invincible.

As for the wing backs I think Freeman keeps his place but wouldn't be surprised if Stevens starts in place of Lafferty.

The problem is it seems bloody harsh dropping anyone from last year's team.

Basham Stearman O'Connell, for me. Would have no complaints with Wright starting.... but would have a problem with Basham not starting. Hmmm.....

One thing I'm very pleased about is our option for a central partnership in a back 4 - Stearman and O'Connell. To have that in place by early July is very satisfying.

Always harsh dropping any player after such a successful season . However we cannot stand still or as Wilder says be sentimental . We are now a progressive club moving forward . Interesting times with good respected players being casualties on the way . Players who don't or cannot hack it will be moved on , and that goes for every player within the squad .
It's the way it's got to be , but Wilder looks after them players who look after him and the club . He will see them ok financially or finding the right deal for all . Proper leader our manager.

I wouldn't drop Bash for anyone. He was out best player after Christmas (Fleck included), and is our quickest defender. He deserves a start purely based on the effort he put in last year, it was a pleasure to witness. First name on the team sheet for me.

If we are playing a 3 with the current personnel then JOC and Basham have to both start as they are the best we have at getting up and down the pitch and covering for the wing backs. Therefore them 2 with Stearman inbetween and Wright to start the season as back up again.

Dont think we need stearman and Wright starting, stearman with the experience and JOC/ bash alongside,

I think a back three with Stearman and Wright in it will have issues of pace. Which is why I think it's unlikely they'll play together often and probably why we'll sign another centre half

Couldn't agree more. That would be a good back 3. It'd be interesting though if we could get this guy from Blackburn who's also been mentioned!( lennihan). Looking unlikely though
As good as Basham was, it seems the choice is him or Wright. We didn't lose a game with Wright in the side and that may be down to luck, but he seems less flappable than Basham.

Wilder said something earlier that Stearman can play in a back for or a back 3 "which is the system we play", so seems we're sticking with it.

I think we'll switch between the two as required. Wilder said Stearman can play in a 3 or a 2. I think he'll play centrally in a 3 and right side of 2 in a back 4.

Spot on s64 blade. Wright was brilliant last season and although basham is good he can get a bit jittery sometimes whereas wright was always there to bring a sense of calm to the defence!.

Wilder on Stearman: "He's a steadying, calming influence"

To me that suggests he's got him in mind for the central role in the back 3.

Coz Wilder said "He can play in a 3 which is how we play". Do think we will mix it up though as occaision demands.
It is true that he can play in a back 3, but he can also play in a back 4, possibly even a back 5 if CW is feeling adventurous!!?

Indeed. But surely a back 5 suggests we aren't being very adventurous.
as long as we don't line up 10-1 !!!

I work with a Wolves fan and as we've had our quarterly meeting today I quizzed him on RS and he said he's a very decent signing for us as always gives 100% and reads the game really well plus great in the air. Drops the odd clanger but overall a good signing.

He did say though that he is basically left footed so IMO he's been bought to play in the middle of a 3 instead of JW and that he won't make up a 2 with JOC.

I think we'll sign another CB to play on the right of a 3 or with RS/JOC in a 2. Hopefully the Blackburn lad as long as we get him for a reasonable enough price.

Thought Basham played very well second half of last season, but there's no getting away from the fact the defence looked a lot more solid with a back three of EEL-Wright-JOC. And before you all start about EEL, he was excellent when he was matched up against a centre forward and had Wright organising alongside. EEL had problems when Wilder played him as the spare man at the back (the Wright role).

Think it's obvious if bash and jOC play we need an experienced player there too guide them.

Jack cos he's learning the trade (although he got better and better as the season progressed) and bash cos he's newish to the position.

Think we are sometimes guilty of underating some of our squad (particularly those that have had criticism in the past) genuinely if basham had performed as he had done for us at rcb from January onwards for another club we have been all been delighted to sign him and would be fully confident he could do the job.

Like that wilder is going for one more though to complete the set - I'd like another up and comer on the joc mold

Agree about eel. Looked good with Wright there along side him. Got the impression wolves have priced him out of the market tho - wilder seemed to be focused on other options in that interview

He's right footed

Still think we need another first choice CB similar to JOC to play at the right of stearman.

Wright as back up to stearman and bash as a utility sub

I wouldn't change a thing. Build on momentum from last season and make it clear that if standards drop or a loss of form happens, then the new signings will replace you.

The last time Basham was in the Championship he ended up being bought for a million pounds to blackpool.

Let's not right him off just yet.
