I reckon its about time we had a fifth official. The amount of controversy that surrounds some decisions is an absoloute joke, managers whinging players whinging referees being undermimed when decisions are overturned blah blah blah. The solution to all of this is simple... the fifth official. Sat somewhere watching all the replays of any decision that the referee is not 100% sure of. It happens in the egg chasing game so why not our beautiful game? The speed at which replays are shown on sky is amazingly quick. I know everyone says it will slow the game down while these decisions are made but whats more important?

Let me know what you think.:)

I think technology ought to be used for some things... I'd need some convincing with others.

I'm all for goal line technology... a chip in the ball and sensors across the line. If there is a goal scored which isn't given... there'll be enough arguments from the scoring team to justify a stop in play.

I don't think a fifth referee would necessarily solve many problems... if a refereeing team want to be biased against a team, a man with a video isn't going to change the game in grey-area decisions.

It's an interesting debate though... and welcome to the forum :hello:

we all know it would make a fairer game and cant be hard to apply in top two leagues .
should be used for goal desisions and bookings, the question is why dont the powers that be want it .......
cant protect the big clubs if theres a t.v replay;)

Would be an idea to use what they do in tennis, have so many video appeals per set/half then you wont have a stop start game with every decision being contested.

If it tv replays mean less penalties were awarded against us its got to be good thing.

Exactly it is funny that the powers are quick to poo poo the idea.

Heaven forbid they actually give a penalty to the away team at Old Trafford.

This has got to be the easiest thing to do in the world! IF a ref is not 100% sure of any decision he can go straight to the video after the ball has gone out of play. Even if one team scores a goal he can go back and so 'no' there was a foul in the run up to said goal.
Its so simple, maybe prove that the mics the refs wear in their ears are not just for saying two sugars in my half time tea please.

I've had this discussion with a number of people over the last few weeks.

Would we lose so much of the chat around football if everything was so clear cut?

It's always happened since football started......although there does seem to be a few more cheats around in the modern game.

The standard of refs is crap though and we do seem to lose out......so.....

I'm undecided really!!

:D

OK heres another one talking of crap refs. We have another premiership ref tomorrow at bristle. Why are prem refs running games in the championship? Its a totallly different game the prem, whats the betting someone is sent off tomorrow?

Nothing to be undecided about with this when you consider the last 3 matches we have had. Where the ref has been awful and the center of attention and instead of discussing the teams performance we find ourselves ranting about the refs. The sooner video technology is used in football the better.

mmmmm...Devils advocate........

Where does it end if we introduce technology though?

Back to plastic pitches?

Sensors in every blade of plastic?

RFIDS in every players boots?

Sensors in the ball and lasers on all lines?

Video head set on all 25 officials? :D

Microphones in every seat to catch abuse and a eject button at the whim of the policeman in charge? Drug/Alcohol sensors too?

Exact stats on each players contribution....eg, every pass, mileage, sweat sensor and urine content?

I could go on.....

:D:D:D

There was something on SSN the other day about having an extra two refs behind the goal, to help with goal line stuff as well as incidents inside the penalty box, surely if they are thinking about doing that they must be realising that the refs arent up to scratch on certain decisions. I think it would be a good idea and I'd be happy with video replays too.

No just simple video replays of the decisions that the ref are not 100% sure of!

Who decides when though and in what circumstances?

What if the ref thinks he's 100% sure like the one on Saturday did anyway?

Would it have made a difference if he thinks he's right?

Not getting at anyone by the way just playing devils advocate.

:)

Silverfox...Sat comfortably on the fence, with a beer and his flat cap!

And a picket up his arse!

Thing is, the refs dont consult the linesmen enough. And the lino tend to do what the ref says.

The game can be too fast for today's system.

Is technology the answer?

The ref decides hes the man in charge if he thinks hes 100% right and hes wrong then so be it. But at least it would cut down on the amount of incorrect decisions he would make if he can go to a video ref.

I agree with Linz.

Im all for having goal line technology, but I dont want it for anything else. Its no good saying "have it in the top two leagues" what about the rest? Its unfair! What about FA cup games? We could play Macclesfield away in the FA Cup and there be no technology at their ground. So its pointless. I dont want cameras neither. Just like Linz says....a chip or something in the ball. People that want to analyse every tackle and every decision are forgetting about what the game is really about. Stop listening to Andy Gray and Chris Kamara all weekend showing replays and slow-mos.....just let the game play.

With most of the refs they would all be 100% right first time i'm afraid!

:D:D:D

With goal line technology there would be less to talk about and forums like this would become boring!

We could still slag off monty for being shit and UNITED for having no AMBITION :D

Its football there would always be something to talk about. Lets get the cheats out of the game and give refs the power to get all the decisions right.

That's definitely one of my concerns. The only solace about coming back from Plymouth on a freezing Tuesday night in the snow after a last minute goal sending your side to defeat to a dodgy penalty is trying to gain the moral high ground.

I don't think I'd like to come out of the ground saying "Crap match, frozen food at the kiosks (unlike Peter's Pies, which are available throughout our ground - go to a kiosk now!), but at least the video technology got things right!"

The best way to get rid of cheating is by using retrospective video replays, where if someone goes down in the box without any contact and trys to claim a penalty, then slam a 6 match ban on them for bringing the game in to disrepute. And so on and so forth for acts of cheating and that would soon stamp it out.

I'm not sure what video replays would achieve as a lot of decisions are subjective, and i think video replays would often slow the game down and stp the flow of the game if the match is stopped for 20 seconds for a replay and decision to be made.

Thing is though mate, even on a video you can't always see contact. Maybe we ought to have a 'snickometer' on players legs to determine contact :D. Speaking of contact, I've still not watched "The Championship" yet, but I've heard there's a rather clear cut foul by the Franchise FC keeper on it.

Agreed.
