I was reading a thread last night that reminded me of a lad who used to go to the games back in the late 80's who always wore a United Davy Crockett hat. He was a similar age to me back then so late teens. Anyone else remember him?

Wouldn't know what a Crockett hat was if it bit me on the arse.
A game for posh folk innit? not for the thicko working class like me.

Possibly. If it's the same lad I knew he was called Brian and he worked as a warehouseman at Tesco on Ecclesall Road. His dad was also called Brian and was the manager there. I played in the same football team as him for a while. Nice lad and his dad was a great bloke too. We used to rib him about the hat.

My first thought it was it might have been a lad from Darnall - Kev Cooper aka Cooperman who used to at Orgreave pit ..mad as fkg hatter ..only bloke I know who could get nicked for eating a hamburger in an aggressive manner to home fans at Notts Co 1984 .. I believe he's passed away now... top lad

Did he "doff" this cap on a regular basis, as this might be the chap Pinchy keeps referring to on another thread!??

I think Coops worked at Brookhouse originally and then came to Treeton Colliery early 80's when Brookhouse closed. Or did he he migrate from Orgreave to Brookhouse then Treeton?
Either way, I worked with him when he came to Treeton and he was nuts (in a nice way).
Some great stories surrounded him during 84-5 strike, quite unrepeatable on here.
Last time I saw him he was working for council on street cleaning services, had a chat and laugh, he's not changed.
Sad when he passed away, one huge character.

I'm pretty sure it was Cooperman who climbed the floodlight pylon at Hudderfield back in the 80's. The police saw him coming down and formed a cordon around the plylon. About 20 feet up was a cable tray which was full of rainwater. Coops kept kicking the water over the 'lip' of the tray - drenching the coppers. I think he got away before he was arrested.

Them were t'days. Nowadays they're going on about 'safe standing areas'. Back then areas were fighting or non-fighting.

Certainly was him. Old Leeds Road ground.

Walked straight into a lamppost en route to ground from special train.
Then got stood on by police horse.

What memories!!

How can you not know who Davy Crockett was?

He was King of the Wild Frontier. Did you grow up in one of those weird households that refused to have a TV?

Feeble attempt at a croquet joke mate ;)

Oh, and we were the first of our immediate neighbours to get a colour telly I'll have you know!
Hitachi. Went on for years.
And we were the first to have a land line when phone boxes used to take 2p pieces.
One neighbour used to come round and phone a relly or friend, be on for about half an hour and leave her 2p on the phone table!
Mum never had the heart to explain and ask for more!!

Remember watching Davy Crockett on our black and white portable TV as a kid. I remember when BBC 2 was first launched and you had to have a special aerial fitted to the roof to receive it. It became a form of snobbery to have one. It was distinctive from other TV aerials because it was a narrow aerial. People were walking down the road gazing up at the rooftops to see who'd got one. Colour TV came many years after that. Hitachi were the most popular model of TV for it back then. I remember seeing the Avengers on my mate's colour TV and being amazed that Diana Rigg had got red hair - I never knew I'd been fancying a ginner all those years!

Phone boxes used to take pennies when I was a kid and had a button A and button B. We never had a phone at home but would walk quarter of a mile to a red phone box if we needed to call anyone.

The first guy on our street to get a TV used to let neighbours come and watch a film at his house and charge them sixpence. i.e. 2.5 new pence.

We have drifted off into nostalgia - so I'll stop there - or maybe I'll just add something about football in this last sentence to keep it qualifying for inclusion in this forum. Like...which Sheffield United managers often wore hats?

wasn't cooperman up floodlights but a lad called brian rawlings, got away with it on the day but was arrested at his house on the monday.

Loads were up the floodlights that day, me included. Didn't someone take a piss onto the coppers below?

Who followed the marching band on at Leeds Road, brandishing what I think was a hot dog?

Went to Halifax on a coach with Cooperman. The 4-2 cup night match. After the game a bunch of their lot tried to take the coach. Cooperman led us down the aisle to see them off which we did quick sticks and with great wrath blah blah blah.Great humour, huge heart.
