No chance, Barnsley want big money, seen £5mil floating around we won't pay that

Cheeky question asked by andy giddings suggested there is local interest in marc roberts behind the scenes. The pigs dont need defensive cover,we do, i wonder if we stayed away from mcarthy to assist in a possible bid for roberts?or is this a 2plus2 equals 5 situation i fear it might be. But hey we would have him lol and Barnsley have signed 4 defenders this window so he is leaving its just to who.......

They're after a centre half... if 5mill is right... it will be them not us I'm afraid.

A possibility here.
I was actually thinking the same thing when I heard the news this afternoon. I also heard about the 'local interest' and when Heckingbottom was asked if it was a Championship club he begrudgingly said it was. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

Barnsley seem to have done some annoyingly decent transfer work recently.

Scowen, Bree, mawson, yiadom, hurihaine, winnall

think Mccarthy and the lad from Luton also look like decent prospects.

A model we should be following with promising lower league signings?

edit - google search seems to suggest Birmingham with Harry redknapp seemingly up to his old tricks of spending everything there is to spend without a single concern as to if the club can afford it.

We are following it mate. Nathan Thomas from Hartlepool, Enda Stevens from Pompey, and George Baldock from MK. Even Ched was from Cehsterfield so I think we are very similar in that regard.

Yeah fair point and I suppose you can think of the likes of O'Connell and Fleck who were picked up last year that are now worth considerably more that they were at the time.

Suppose I was thinking of the dark Hammond and Woolford days - give me an up and comer any day over someone whos been treading water somewhere.

Totally agree mate. I hope we make more signings from League One, rather than the likes of Conor Sammon! He was like a fish out of water!

Sorry! ;)

Pigs do need defensive cover according to Porktalk. Loovens is to slow and injury prone.

Be a statement of intent signing a lad like this.

I would be amazed if we were the interested party! He'd cost over £1m and I can't see us spending that type of fee on one player. I've seen some of our fans saying that we'll maybe bid big for one player. I find that unlikely because it seems we're haggling for every few grand for over a month now on Holmes and Leonard and neither of those will cost over a million. Yes that might be so we can have that one big signing but I doubt Roberts would leave an established Championship side as Barnsley now are for one that has just got promoted, even though we are a much bigger club than them.

If you were Roberts you'd want to move to a club that is likely to give you the best chance of promotion. We're still outsiders for that.

They are after at least one but possibly two cb's

One is reported to be Richard Keogh of Derby who has all but signed apparently.

If there is a second one then I wouldn't rule out Roberts and they have far more clout than we do.

The £5m I think in reality is way wide of the mark imo. I think he's in the last 12 months of his contract. One Dingle fan mentioned that he hoped they get £1m for him which I would guess would seem more realistic and may mean we are in for him probably along with a number of other interested clubs

Why do people keep saying that we don't have funds to spend on players??
We are not going to be able to compete"shopping at aldi"
Sooner rather than later we've got to add some championship calibre quality.
Roberts fits that bill.3million for him is a steal, and it shouldn't be out of our reach.
If we end up paying a fee for Eel,I will be pissed off,as I will class that as a "lidl calibre signing".
We have to be able to compete in the midst of mid table standard clubs-i.e.,Ipswich,Birmingham,qpr etc and they ain't shopping at aldi!!
Plenty of time for wilder to turn over a trump card I hope.

Oh I don't know Booker 4, most blades seem to think we will consolidate this season, meaning we will finish above some established championship clubs.
Wether one of those are Barnsley or not, we will have to wait and see. But given a choice of a 2/3 year contract with either club, I know which one I would rather be with in 2/3 years time.

What's wrong with Aldi?

Nowt wrong with Aldi and Lidl, same quality as your Waitroses and a tenth of the price

Smart spending that lad, rather than paying more for the name

I'm sure that can be applied to many things in life ;)

we have been linked with many of the same players and then Barnsley have plucked some good Scottish talent too its the likes of Barnsley we will be battling next season!

Never heard of him, £5m?? Wilder could build 5 or 6 teams for that, sounds like the local interest is from dem mugs up the road.

We won't be spending 5mill on anyone. I doubt very much 3mill and the way things are going I think we need to be prepared that 'a fee that could be worth over 7 figures' will probably the extent of our spending spree.

That as said might not be the end of the world tho.
