Picture this.
Today, I'm at the start of a meeting in Cincinnati, pitching for a contract to import stuff to the UK.
The conversation turns to sport and I'm asked if I like football.
"No, soccer" I reply, assuming he's like the average American.
"That's what I meant" he replied.
"Oh, I thought...."
"No, I love football. Which team do you support?"
Regrettably, I said something like, "Oh, You probably haven't heard of us" (Sorry Bladey Blades!)
"Go on, who is it then?" he asked.
"Sheffield United" I replied.
"REALLY?" he said. "I was trained by a Sheffield United player....Alan, oh what was his name"
"Not Alan Woodward was it?" I asked him.
"YEAH, THAT'S HIM. Great coach and a great man"
The deal was in the bag from that moment!
He did take a little shine off the conversation though when he said,
"Is it true that he once scored a goal from the half field?"
Bloody Americans!!

And a headed shit to goal too. Don't you just love em:D

Yup Alan Woodward. Best rightflank quarterback the Sheffield Blades ever fielded.

Once saw him punt a goal shoot direct from a corner kick-in in the first forty-five against Leicester Foxes. Goal-tender Pete Shilton tracked the ball but was left sprawling at the nearside goal zone as it registered Sheffield Blades supremacy. Man, was he pissed. It was on BB-WXJL* Match of the Day with anchorman Jim Hill later that evening, and featured on a video-compilation of best goal strikes. All Sheffield soccerfans know about Alan's brilliance with his score-rate.

*anyone? Sheffield link there.

The goal was so awesome the players couldn't stop talking about in the locker room after the second 45. In fact folks were sure still bigging it up in the off season. Way to go!

The type of form Coach Wilder will be looking to see from forward line off-ense receiver Chad Evans after serving some serious jail time following an alleged felony at a Premier Inn Motel.

ps: 'WXJL Tonight' is a superb track from Human League v1.0's* seminal album Travelogue which tells the story of the death of radio.

*i.e. before MW and ICM sodded off and the tuneless pair of Birley slappers hoved into view in the Crazy Daisy and ruined the band

Very good but it was scored in the last 10 minutes

Whoosh...

Your cunning link was missed by us all. Probably due to a combination of the Human League including Wendies and hence not suitable for Blade listening, but also most of not having a clue what you were on about.

I digress. Back to the Desso in hand........

Aaaagghhhh!

A while ago, I carried on the Blades-related love-in during our continued email communications by informing him of our result at Stocksbridge to which he replied:

9-0?! That is not only a blowout, but sounds like pure domination. Well played, Sheffield.

Then today, this arrives in my inbox:

Well, are we getting excited yet about the upcoming Sheffield season debut?! I'm sure Bramall Lane will be festive on Saturday!
