Football as you rightly point out began c130 years ago, therefore so do the statistics as far as I am concerned!

I agree but nobody is going to research every club's transfers back to the 1880's. It's too much work and the older information isn't easily available.

Before the Premiership came along, the media would usually say everything was the best "post war".

Records set before the Second World War were marginalised, so it's not totally a new/Sky invention.
