Just watched a program, here in Germany, about old stadiums. The three oldest were, 3: Bramall Lane, 2: Mansfield Town's. 1: Hallam FC. Showed the development of the Lane. Interesting, but I always thought the Lane was the oldest stadium still in use.

Bramall Lane is the oldest professional stadium I believe, and Sheffield fc are the oldest club are they not???

Sorry about that, Gary Sinclair had my phone for 2 seconds.

Sheffield FC is the oldest club.
It had to auction the oldest set of laws still in existence a year or two ago. Didn't get as much as they'd hoped. Seem to recall summat like £800k or prob less.

Says a lot about this city unfortunately. People from around the world flock to a patch of grass behind a pub in Dronfield to see a unique and special institution like Sheffield FC. The locals meanwhile, couldn't give a toss.

And blown the lot by signing players on high wages.

Didnt work well for them

The programme did suggest visiting Sheffield as you get 2 of the 3 oldest stadiums/stadia in one place. They described the atmosphere at Bramall Lane as, 'legendary', quoting Pochitino(sp) Spurs manager. When did he say that?

Imagine being told of the legendary atmosphere at Bramall Lane to turn up and see Blades v Gillingham and everybody sat chatting for 85 minutes. Thank fuck we've been promoted.

There are many claims to oldest stadium but it depends on definition.

1: The oldest stadium still playing football is Sandygate which belongs to Hallam.FC
2: The oldest pro stadium is Field Mill at Mansfield.
Remember Mansfield went into the non league so we became the world oldest pro stadium.
Now Mansfield are back and have turned fully pro again. So we're no longer the oldest pro stadium in the world even though we keep saying it.
3: We were always the oldest major stadium in the world and will always be.
4: Preston fans also claim to be the oldest stadium because they've played at Deepdale longer than any club, well before we were even formed. I suppose you could say they are the oldest tenants of a stadium in the world but there was football played at both Field Mill and Bramall Lane before PNE were even formed.

A few weeks after the league cup semi final second leg at BDTBL. He was asked which ground had the best atmosphere in England, mentioned a few premier league grounds but said the best he'd experienced was that second leg.

Yes he was quoted as saying that Bramall Lane was the best atmosphere he's seen in his time in England after the 2-2 draw in the FA Cup. Jose Mourinho was also complimentary during our last stint in the Premiership.

After the 2nd leg 2-2 draw in the League Cup semi final at the lane back in 2014(?). Personally though the atmosphere was pretty good that night I can think of a fair few more that were far louder, vociferous and intimidating than that night

If you purely think in football terms, that is probably right. But as a professional sports ground, Bramall Lane predates them all (cricket, then football).

It can start getting complicated because a knowledgable Wolves fan once told me that Molineux was used as a sports ground from before 1750, before BL was even built. The Molineux site was used for cycling, athletics and ice skating rink and early versions of football well before Sheffield FC was formed.
But it seems it wasn't a stadium just a large green field (a park) used for sport.

The Preston fans say that Deppdale is the oldest ground that has been used regularly by the same club (PNE) for football.

Thry say that although football WAS played earlier at Field Mill and Bramall Lane, those grounds grounds never belonged to a team at the team and only hosted the occasional match.

As I said it depends on definition.

It is complicated, I think the most older grounds can make a claim for earlier sports, but for continuous use professionally, Yorkshire being there from 1855, Bramall Lane probably wins out.

1860 for Molineux when the grounds were turned into 'leisure'...

The Molineux name originates from Benjamin Molineux, a successful local merchant (and a distant relative of the now extinct Earls of Sefton) who, in 1744, purchased land on which he built Molineux House (later converted to the Molineux Hotel) and on which the stadium would eventually be built. The estate was purchased in 1860 by O.E. McGregor, who converted the land into a pleasure park open to the public. Molineux Grounds, as it was titled, included a wide range of facilities including an ice rink, a cycling track, a boating lake and, most crucially, an area for football.

The grounds were sold to the Northampton Brewery in 1889, who rented its use to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who had previously played at Dudley Road. After renovating the site, the first ever league game was staged on 7 September 1889 in a 2–0 victory over Notts County before a crowd of 4,000.

A more correct description is Bramall Lane is the oldest sports stadium still hosting professional football as Bramall Lane opened as a sporting venue in 1855 albeit for cricket.

Preston, Newport, Mansfield & now Wolves. they're having a laugh. None of them has hosted an Ashes test. None of them has hosted a F.A. Cup final. None of them has hosted an England international match. If they want to hang on to our coat tails it's up to them. Fuck them all.

Maidenhead United would claim that York Road is the oldest ground in the world, they were formed in 1869

If we start going into dates of Race Courses then you can go back as far as the 16th Century with some.. Chester is the oldest one still going.

Indeed, Sheffield could make a more of this, other cities make a lot more out of less (and tourists are money right)

I think the Sheffield rules are Sheffields gift to the world, without them football would never have become the free flowing game it has. All hail Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest. Pay more attention SCC tourism department

This thread could turn into a Monty Python sketch.

We're the oldest stadium in the world.
No that's Sandygate
OK we're the oldest professional stadium in the world
No that's Field Mill at Mansfield
OK we're are the oldest sports stadium in the world
No that would be Molineux in Wolverhampton
OK we have played football longer than any other major club
No, that would be Deepdale as PNE have played there longer than any other major club.
OK, we are the .........oldest... major...sporting venue including cricket excluding bowls and tennis so that makes us..... mmmm......oh fuck it....I give up.

Being serious the accurate discription is "oldest major football stadium in the world."
