Disappointed he's not signing. I like him as a player, but if he's been told he's only going to be a squad player and regular first team football not guaranteed then I can understand his position. At his age the next couple of years are going to be very important for him if he is to get international call ups etc. I wish the lad well anyhow. And I hope this means that Wilder may go and get Erhun Oztumer from Walsall instead - who would definitely NOT be a squad player, but one of the most exciting signings for a long, long time.

Funny innit?
Wilder signs someone we're not sure about and we all trust he can make something of him.
Wilder tries to sign someone who says no thanks, and he's not good enough, just a league one squad player etc.
Where's the, "That's a shame, if Wilder thought he was worth signing, he was worth signing"?

Good luck to him. Scored a few goals including that equaliser at Oldham, which I think was quite important in the overall scheme of things. Shame his shot against Scunny came back off of the post though.

I hope the Carruthers rumours aren't true as it will make us light in midfield if he leaves too

The difference is that we've seen him in the flesh.

Most of the responses say 'thanks for promotion' but point out he has only been a bit-part player and it is doubtful what he might offer in the Championship. Nothing 'funny' about that IMHO.

I think he was too afraid to stay and what I mean by that is that I think deep down he knew he would personally struggle in the championship and he was probably afraid of that, he was afraid of failure. He feels comfortable in League One. Good luck to him.

So what did it say about TC's character when he left us for Leeds?

When TC left United for the weeds your comment is a bit ill informed. TC did not know he was going to Leeds he was told you've been sold to Leeds and that was that.

Not sure myself, I think if he'd have been offered what he'd consider to be a decent financial deal he'd have taken it without too much thought as to whether he would struggle or not.

I think it's probably more like the deal didn't work for him and he'd get the same, possibly a bit better in League 1?

I read on here last week that both TC and Woody requested transfers but we were able to persuade Woody to stay.

Fair play to him if this is down to match time or lack of next season, if it's about money then we are well rid.

He is a decent player but nothing special in my opinion. I would much rather have Holmes or Oztumer anyway, if they are gettable.

I think we all feel that don't we. I'd still rather Carey over O'Shea but that's just because of the rave reviews and you tube highlights I've seen of Carey!

With Wilder's reputation for shrewdness you've got to expect he'll have been offered a deal relative to his place in the squad i.e. largely back up even before we add some more Summer signings. If we'd have been desperate to hold on to him I'm sure we could have offered more than the clubs he's now looking at. Nobody higher placed than us is likely to gamble on him. In that case, I'd assume he wants first team football and I'll never begrudge a player making a move for that reason.

Can't say I was that bothered about him anyway so on to our next target.

I would bet that he ends up wherever Paul Cook is! He has always been a fan of O'Shea. Would be a decent signing for Pompey on their return. I'm amazed that Cook is even considering laving Pompey for Wigan!

It would be reasonable to assume that United offered O'Shea a package in line with the role we wanted him to play in our squad and it didn't match what he was looking for. We both move on amicably. Good luck Jay.

given he was struggling to get regular game time in league one i think its fair to say that wilder will have made it clear that his opportunities would have been even more limited next season and the bloke has recognised this and wants to move to somewhere he'll play regularly. not sure how anyone could question his 'character' when the alternative was him sitting around here doing nothing for the next 2 years whilst collecting a nice little pay packet...

i don't think he's a huge miss and with the likes of oztumer, holmes, carey etc. all being linked we're probably going to end up signing better in his position anyway but regardless he contributed well during our run in last season and i wish him all the best. will for sure get a nice contract and regular football at a decent league one club, maybe even higher.

I predict that we'll step up any interest in Ben Reeves and Graham Carey following this news.

Both free agents like O'Shea, both play the same position.

Could also decide to spend on Ricky Holmes though.

Then in addition I'd expect someone who's primarily a right winger, like Mendez-Laing.

Isn't the general consensus that we need quality over quantity?

What's the problem in O'Shea turning us down.

He probably wants regular 1st team football at his age, most United fans believe he wouldn't get it at BDTBL.

Good luck to him and thanks for the goals you scored - especially Oldham - we needed that.

I was a bit surprised when CW offered him a contract but more surprised he has turned down a 2 year contract.
probably wanted to start more games cw cannot guarantee that for him moving somewhere else might be better for him heard charlton are sniffing around

If it wasn't for his goal at Oldham then we wouldn't have got to 100pts.

Thanks JOS
also not one of his goals but his brilliant cross to far post for hanson to then set up sharp to win at Peterborough was another thing to be thankful for good luck jay had a rotherham fan on RS asking about him

Imagine my dismay at opening this thread and not finding that is was anything to do with ornithological studies pertaining to the magnificent Garrulus glandarius

Not really. We'll have offered squad player wages and he knows he'd likely not get much first team football. So he wants to get more elsewhere and regular spot in a team. Wigan would represent that.

It's just business, we only value him as a squad player so will have lowballed him a bit in the offer. He's decided to move on. Has got nothing to do with character issues in fact I'm surprised we offered at all.

He filled a role for us last year and made some good contributions in the run in, best of luck to the lad.
I get your point. Does that mean though that squad players have no opportunity to grab a regular first team spot irrespective of 'upping' their game? Yes chances may be limited but players will get opportunities and will have to grab them. Then they become first choice......it just takes longer I guess, than being given a first team position.

I do appreciate, however, that its easier to make an impact on a downward moving team than a successful one. Hell, I might even chose that way for more money.

O'Shea was never our player, he wad playing for a contract and had not given us years of great service but has chosen, IMO, a club on the down.

Not having a pop at the guy, although reading my post back, it looks that way, but putting out there an alternative view.

Best move for all concerned. Done enough to warrant a contract offer. not good enough to play a big part next season, I think he was told that, he will be offered a longer contract on more money elsewhere meaning we haven't got him sat on or wage bill for the next two years before getting released in 2019. I have a feeling CW maybe relieved too

That's why he was probably only offered a 2 year contract, if Wilder really wanted him he'd of been offered a 3 year deal.

I've no problem with this. Jay chipped in with some crucial goals and assists, which we are grateful for, but he was never going to be a starter once we got in the Championship - and he would have known it.

We can sign better, and fair play to him for wanting to seek out first team football elsewhere.

His choice, but when he says it would be a dream to get a full time move here I can't help but think nob by rejecting it.

I like him but if it means we can go get Oztumer instead then no contest imo.

Those of you wanting another "striker" should look at what Oztumer offers from midfield!

Play him in the number 10 role and your prayers will be answered.
