Looking back to the Bassett double promotion seasons between 88 and 90 it was some achievement. We finished second behind Wolves in old Division Three and they were comfortably the better side. I can't think of any single signing after that season that made a huge difference for the following season. What lessons can Wilder take from Bassett's triumph for next season?​

In fact, Bassett made a number of important signings.

He changed 3 of the back 4 -

Colin Hill came in for Wilder
David Barnes came in for Pike
Mark Morris came in for Steve Thompson (Brian Smiths career having ended)

When you remember Simon Tracey had only got his place in the last half dozen games, only Stan was left of the back 5 that played most of the previous season.

Further forward, Alan Roberts was out and Carl Bradshaw came in and did a good job. Wilf Rostron also added a dimension down the left.

Paul Wood and Billy Whitehurst made useful contributions later.

It is interesting that in going up first time Bassett completely rebuilt the front 4 and left the defence alone, but did the opposite the following season.

No offence to the players concerned who did a good job for us, but players like Mark Morris and Paul Wood wouldn't get close to our current first team (as they were then)

He had a decent year when we went up. He was shocking the following year.

The main reason why we went up was due to the success of Tracey's accurate kicks to Deane's head. Only Harold Wilkinson of L**ds worked it out. He would have Carl Shutt or Bobby Davison to unsettle Tracey when he is ready to kick the ball upfield and not allow him to roll the ball outside the box to get the right trajectory of the kick for Deane to flick the ball on to the right area. Sometimes Tracey would aim for Bryson on the left or Bradshaw on the right. I enjoyed the season and the only matches I missed were Plymouth (a) and Watford (a) in the League

Yes, it took me a long time to appreciate Gannon. I enjoyed 1989-90 very much despite we didnt play possession football as we did in 1970-71 and 2016-17

Pike played 2 league plus 1 sub appearances.

Yes Duffield broke his leg colliding with Swindon's keeper and a Swindon defender despite that he scored (some reports say it was a Gittens own goal)
