Supposedly we have bid less than £300k it says too. Boro bid £300k and our bid is substantially less so it says.

Finally we have a direct winger with pace. Yes he isn't the finished article but we have supposedly beaten Boro and Leeds for him. Shows he has something and if CW cannot get it out him then it just isn't meant to be for him.

Low risk transfer. Excellent deal.

Nathan Thomas will undergo a medical at Sheffield United on Saturday morning, according to Sky sources

The 22-year-old has agreed personal terms with the League One champions, after a fee of £300,000 was agreed with current club Hartlepool on Wednesday.

Middlesbrough had agreed a similar fee for the player, but Sky sources understand Thomas chose United because he felt it would be better for his career.

My guess is Boro's lack of manager meant that he'd be signing for a club where next season there would be a new manager who might not even fancy him. Boro have made a total mess this season of trying to stay up. Also it seems he was destined for there under 23's and that's not where you want to be playing having been a regular for the Monkey Hangers!

£100,000. Any additional money depends on appearances etc.

Whoop whoop

We got Chrissy Wilder... he signs who he wants

Boro fans are thankful he chose us.

Something about look what happened the last time they went down and replaced Tuncay with Mark Yeates.

Apparently he chose us because he's got a better chance of regular football here. Probably true.

Yeah but who cares what Boro fans think?

Does Boros interest in him mean they rate him more than Harry Chapman?

They have too, why else try and buy him?

Ignore what Boro fans thinks the boss of recruitment thinks he's good enough but Hey have lost out on this one to us.

The fact that a club who's just fallen from the Prem were after him says a lot about his ability. Glad we're not after Jorneymen looking for a last pay day.

The fact that Mendez Laing was on fire last season and at his peak on a free means this kid must be very decent!

Looks like the local Pool press are now going with the Sky report. Sky Sources = Jeff Stelling?

Sheffield United beat Middlesbrough in race to sign Hartlepool United forward Nathan Thomas

Hartlepool United forward Nathan Thomas is to undergo a medical at Sheffield United tomorrow morning, Sky Sports are reporting. It is understood a £300,000 fee has been agreed between the Blades and Pools.

The 22-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Championship club, having, it seems, turned down an opportunity to join hometown club Middlesbrough. It is believed Boro offered a similar transfer figure but Thomas picked Chris Wilder's side because he felt he would have a greater chance of first-team football.

The skilful left-footer netted nine times in an injury-interrupted season at relegated Pools. At one stage it seemed inevitable Thomas would depart in the January transfer window after starting the season like a house on fire. A fee somewhere near £1 million looked within reach for Pools for a player who Ronnie Moore had snapped up as a bargain buy from Mansfield Town in the early hours of the January 2016 transfer window.

Thomas was in brilliant form, winning the 2-1 victory at Yeovil almost single-handedly and scoring a 'worldy' in the 3-0 romp at Grimsby. However, it all went awry when he suffered a groin injury at Barnet on the final Saturday of October and subsequent surgery ruled him out for almost three months, ending any chance of him leaving in the New Year. Thomas scored twice on his return to the side but, not fully fit, he could not recreate the magic he displayed earlier in the campaign.

He was also not inspired by the managerial regime of Dave Jones so Pools, sadly, did not see the best of him. When Jones was sacked, Thomas said he was a player re-born only for a knee niggle to rule him out of the win over Doncaster.

But on his day, Thomas is a stunning player, who can beat opponents as though they are not there and that is what has attracted the interest of Sheffield United and Boro.

Signing Thomas doesn't reduce the chances of being interested in Mendez-Laing too much. NML is right sided and I'm fairly sure we'll sign someone who can naturally play on the right.

It could well be him, he's a very appealing free transfer.

Heard anything about him Treeton Blade ?

Mendez Laing is widely acknowledged as being one of, if not the best winger in the lower leagues as he improved enourmously last season.
He is out of contract and subsequently available on a free, ( ok he will require a signing on fee ) but should not be any more expensive than Thomas, with one would assume similar wages.
If we have signed Thomas in preference to him it can only be good as one assume Mitch and CW consider him better value, alternatively he is being pursued to play on the right.

Yes, he is one we are interested in.

Has really knuckled down since he was last with us, and is in the form of his life.
Could definitely make the step up IMO.

The Nathan Thomas thing will be confirmed today. That's good news if so. I thought Middlesboro would tempt him, being a local lad. But he's put potential before geography I see? Great!

Only just caught the tale-end of this conversation about Mendez-Laing. Never really rated him when he played for us, but he was outstanding against us for Peterboro at their place last season. So...could do worse!

Certainly is! It could be a lot worse, we could piss 10 mil up the wall for Rhodes and £6 mil for Reach. worlds gone mad

Can we at least wait until after the playoffs before taking the piss out of their expensive signings?

£16m will be a bargain if they go up.

It's seems like it's a good job we didn't listen to your "fuck him, move on" advice ;)
We haven`t seen him yet!

Seriously, I was wrong wasn`t I.
Was told we had the first bid accepted, then his agent wanted to start an auction, tried to get Leeds interested too.

Boro were paying more upfront, so Pools are disappointed he has chosen us, credit to the lad for doing so, maybe the `bad attitude` story I heard is just bitterness from a frustrated Hartlepool fan.
