Wilders transfer approach ?

I can't see that being true tbh.

A more interesting general point is that Peterborough were quite successful with a policy of buying from the lower divisions, often non-league. This isn't working as well for them now and I wonder if it's because other clubs have caught on to this? Once other clubs are also scouting non-league it puts up the price of potentially good players and makes it harder to land them. Instead of three or four good ones going to a couple of clubs, they'll be three or four going to different clubs at a higher price.

They bought a kid from Dover last week, and according to the local rag down here they have already turned down £250k from another league one club (rumoured to be Charlton)! :)

Seems as if some people think taking a small flyer on players from lower divisions somehow:

a) means they're instantly going to be installed in the first team
b) prevents us from splashing out on targets from higher divisions

Wilder will have his targets and ideas of what he needs to compete at a higher level, this doesn't prevent us also taking punts on others that might develop into something later on. Doubt anyone expected Che Adams to walk into the first team when we bought him but that worked out alright

I don't see the problem, had anybody heard of Moore, Wright, O'Connell, Lafferty ect before we signed them ? Plenty of gems out there to be unearthed and Wilder and Mitchell seem to know where to dig.

I'm genuinely unsure if Wigan have even got a manager.

I've just checked, and you're right, they are managerless. I thought the ex Man Utd coach Joyce was still in charge, his sacking must have slipped past me.

In my opinion at least, there was little wrong with Wigan's recruitment, I personally think their managerial choices have been the major contributing factor in their relegation.

Does anyone know exactly how the recruitment process works at the Lane ?

As far as I'm aware Wilder doesnt actually specify names he'd like to have checked out he tells Mitchell which positions he's looking to strengthen and the type of player he wants . Mitchell gos away and comes back with a shortlist of players , ranked in terms of ability , and CW then sets the ball rolling .

If this is how our recruitment works is there a potential problem here ? Has Mitchell ever scouted for a championship level club or higher ? If he hasn't is this why we appear to be making signings only from the lower leagues ? Mitchells a great scout and his track record speaks volumes , but this is scouting in the lower leagues only .

Now don't get me wrong here , signing the likes of Evans and O Shea whilst being linked with some real gems in the lower leagues is great to see . But these signings are based upon potential only . Shouldn't we be looking for at least a couple of ' shoe ins ' at a Championship level ?

It's early days though and I must confess it's great to be scouring the lower leagues for talented players with great attitudes who'll wear our shirt with pride . But I'd also like to see a couple of championship stalwarts who share the right attitude too .
Lafferty, Riley and Chapman all came from Premier League clubs.

Couldn't agree more. The last thing you do when you're in a relegation battle is appoint a rookie manager. It was a big gamble with Caldwell which they got away with and I suppose they thought they could get away with it again.

My thoughts exactly, "gamble" being the operative word. We know all to well after the Weir debacle
