There was a guy being interviewed which I only caught the end of but he was some sort of sports psychologist who specialised in people discussing problems and he mentioned that he had worked at Sheffield United with Chris Wilder as well as Middlesex CC and I think another football club.
Not sure what he was called but think his name was Steve and he had written a book but missed the title (something like detox your mind)
Anybody catch it or know who he is ?

I know piss is being taken on this , but this interview was fascinating and a insight into Wilder .

We and others in the game see Wilder as old school . He is far from it , and uses every facility to assist fine lines to our advantage. Wilder employed this sports psychologist with 100% open access to the playing staff , to assist in the mental side of the game .

Just look at the run all season , and after the Northampton game . Mental strength , don't knock it .

Wilder uses sports science to its full . He and we are ahead of the game

No idea who he was but worked at United and a cricket club .

Helped the players to believe with Wilder .

Yeh I heard it.

It's Steven Sylvester, the mysterious black bloke in the Chesterfield end of match medal presentations. He's the official club psychologist and anyone within any anxieties, mental health issues is allowed to speak with Steve. Better to deal with it before anything gets out of hand.

Hawksby and Jacobs were discussing the recent Aaron Lennon mental health/ depression incident.
Sylvester talked about the roles of Facebook and Twitter and how today's players are under so much pressure to perform otherwise they receive personal abuse. He said many players may suffer from mental health issues which manifests itself in different ways. Hawksby and Jacobs said that being a club psychologist may be a growth industry as all clubs may end up employing full time psychologists.

Sylvester said he currently works for Sheff Utd in the Winter and Middlesex Cricket club in the Summer.

He talked about it being natural to have an ego and most players are selfish but he tries to coax them into thinking more about the team than themselves. He also plugged his latest book "Detox your Ego" and said how it can be applied to improving normal everyday life, not just professional sport.

He said Chris Wilder has been fantastic, trusted him and allowed him full access to his players.
He said happy players, who are able to discuss issues, be if personal or professional are generally able to perform better. He said he's makes himself available to the players 24 hours a day if they wish to chat about anything.

Hawksby and Jacobs said that both Middlesex and Sheffield United are currently champions, they said it might be a coincedence but maybe his effect as club psychologist is more significant than he thinks.

Cheers Mate - very insightful

If you google "Steven Sylvester Sheffield United Facebook" click the first link and you'll see some of the medal presentation photos and celebration photos at the end of Chesterfield game.

In past decades it was always the manager that was the club psychologist
I reckon this Steve character could be very busy next season with the emotional baggage and scars that come with having the infamous Ched Evans in the squad. At least we know Ched will have his emotional and mental state closely monitored. Good move by the club.

What's that , Steve Jobs is buying the club, who's Steve Jobs ?

Pretty sure Dave Bassett used Anthony Robbins an American psychologist / guru. Bassett, another manager who is immediately linked with 'old school' and yet was quite open to take on new methods.

Wonder if Chris Wilder was around in those days and realised its benefit.

CW was around as he referred to a pre season he had with Bassett, in one of his interviews.

Disappointed that the Steven Sylvester stuff has come out because so many will now try it and make our job harder.

Was he after we had Andrew Cale? Asked Jostein Flo to break a block of wood or something like that?

Sam allardyce is another who is regarded as old school ,but is far from it. At Bolton he was very innovative and ahead of the game with diet ,psychologists and training methods ,many are copied by the foreign managers at the head of the game today and Allardyce gets very little recognition for this.

He should of told him it's not a good idea to tell the press how a club can get round the third party ownership rules.

Allardyce gets very little recognition for this.

Fortunately however he does get plenty of recognition for being a dour bent Brummie who lost the dream England job for a backhander and an inability to keep his miserable trap shut. Couldn't happen to a nicer man and all that...

Seem to remember from the TV series following the Bassett era we had one referred to "Simon the shrink" but I might be mistaken. All for it if if gets their heads in the right place.
