Move our training ground to London?

This thread has reminded me of Gjorgi Hristov's verdict on Barnsley:

'I'm finding it difficult to find a girlfriend in Barnsley, or indeed settle into a decent way of life. The local girls are far uglier than the ones back in Belgrade or Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, where I come from.

'Our women are much prettier. Besides, they don't drink as much beer as the Barnsley girls which is something I don't like at all.'
 



So what the fuck has London got going for it, yep fuck all, ok for a day trip otherwise hate the place with a passion full of ignorant miserable bastards pushing through the underground with the London stare. Everyone I know from London love it up North and can't wait to get away from the shithole.
 
In the next 10 years or so it may become more inevitable that northern clubs set up southern training grounds, albeit probably only the biggest northern clubs will see it as necessary if they can no longer attract the best foreign players.

If it were to start happening and I was in charge I'd make sure we were one of the exceptions to it. First thing that comes to mind when anybody thinks about Sheffield is that we're very northern, but imo geographically the city is fairly central when looking on a map of England - we're certainly not southern or in the Midlands but not too far up north either, being no more than 2 hours away on the train and 3 to 3.5 hours up the M1 from London. A fact some may find surprising is that Sheffield is closer to London than Exeter is!

Players that don't fancy playing up north should think themselves lucky that we're not as big as the States, sporting teams over there have to travel by plane to get to away games when necessary. They should remind themselves England is only a small island.

Fair point, should have said 'down south' to be precise. The players would be living in London, the training ground would be outside London with relatively straightforward travel connections. If this is going to be the trend I'd like to think we would get ahead of the curve and buy some land just in case and rent it out, then sell it if the necessity dies down.

As much as we might love Sheffield, players and their families on the whole would probably prefer London. We can have a dig at mercenary-like footballers and their lifestyles, but if moving down there meant we get the next Ronaldo rather than Brentford I'd be all for it.

No, you definitely aren't Pork. Daft thing to say. You do however create threads just for what seems to be the sake of it, usually based on sports medias latest hot topic rather than any United link.
 
In our premiership season, remember talking to an Arsenal fan on the tube. I was complementary of the way they played at the time. The Gunners fan was very embarrassed, and was genially actually jealous that we had so many homegrown, English-British players!
Remember looking at their program and each player had a little flag against his nationality. Our squad was 90% British and a splattering of Irish, not even sure if they had one St George's Cross.
And nights like tonight with our 2 (3 if you count McCabe!) leaders and their antics, bringing all the team on board........ just makes you so proud of being SUFC Red n White :-)
 
We can sell Shirecliffe to those mugs in S6.

Post Brexit it is very likely the rules on foreign work permits will be tightened. Ok the PL will puff themselves up as a special case but we as a club are quite British at the moment and likely to stay that way.

Complete non starter for us as a club. Don't give a fuck if any other club thinks this is a "good idea".

I want my club to have an affinity with the local area.

It is a bit of a wacky idea though.

No club of our stature would do it, we'd lose contact with our fan base, (see tonight or Sunday for evidence) Man City a mega rich club with no real need to operate a local enterprise have pumped Millions into the Eastland area with little likely return in players so that is a philanthropist operation..

And it seems the issue is one fringe first team player in Samir Carruthers who may (or may not) be unsettled.

None starter really.

Back on topic, would we really lose significant contact with the club by moving training ground? It's not like most of us see them often apart from on matchdays. Didn't really see it being of so much importance, not mocking but genuinely find it interesting. It's not my idea to point out

They might be. Newcastle is a great city and the Northumberland coastline and countryside is up there with the best in Britain. A beautiful part of the world.

Exactly. London has some great points and I enjoy it as a city - but my it is over priced, over crowded and a right fucking dump in lots of places. Cheshire has to be a much more 'footballer friendly' area of the country and 3 of the top 5 will be Lancashire based teams.

It is bullshit and balony backed up by fuck all fact spouted by Sky.

No I don't think that would apply, if teams did this their academies would probably stay where they are. I think moving is against FA rules as academies have to be in a certain catchment area relative to the location of the club (think its two hours travelling distance). This idea would more apply for senior players and affect how the first team does, we'd all be against the academy moving even if it were possible/better for obvious reasons!
 
I think it's nonsense to be honest and Gary should know better, both been ex Man Utd and having a vested interest in many of the developments in the city now, which is booming.

I guess it ultimately depends on what type of person a player is, as to where they'll live. Not all of them are city dwellers by nature anyway. Throw in the fact that the north of England has some of the best residential areas with the highest disposable incomes in the country (Cheshire and Hallam constituencies been the highest two), it's not like they're having to rough it in a terraced house in Page Hall.
 
Both Manchester clubs have had problems with some foreign players not liking the area (Balotelli and Tevez spring to mind). The London clubs undoubtedly benefit from there being pretty much an enclave of every nationality with restaurants to match and many, many wimmens from all around the world who pass the 'Hristov test'. Plus, players can disappear into the demi-monde a lot easier for a quiet night out than they can in a city where they are followed around by daft lads going 'you're reyt good, you are' or alternatively 'nah then piggy bastard'.

When Chrissy leads us into the Prem, this will definitely be a factor shaping recruitment policy: I would hope the core of the team would remain British, sprinkled with Northern European recruits who can appreciate the joys of standing on Stanage Edge with a force eight gale blowing horizontal rain in t' face.

Budget aside, that is exactly why CW won't sign those type of players. He will look for lads from the British Isles with the right mentality and teamwork ethic. I'd guess that any foreigners he may sign, will have already played here and acclimatised to some degree.

Since the Nevillester got the boot from Valencia he has too much time on his hands. Not satisfied with developing more new bars and luxury flats in the Rainy City, he seems to think he is some kind of national treasure as a pundit. He speaks his mind and some sense, but plenty of bollocks too.

Man with 8 Prem titles, 3 FA cups, 2 Champs League medals and 85 England caps tells man with 2 FA cups, 1 Champs League medal and 38 caps that good players won't move to the north, despite both men playing exclusively for northern teams.
